I never read this when I was young, but my kids are definitely in a horse phase, and so it was a perfect classic to read together. Based on the true story of the ponies who survived a shipwreck and lived on an island off the coast of Virginia, the main plot is about a brother and sister who work hard to try to earn enough money to buy one of the ponies. We loved it, and were completely caught up in the adventure of Misty and her wild mom, Phantom.

It was wonderful re- visiting a favorite childhood author. I have saved a couple of her books- oh my, could they be 50 years old?!. ( Stormy still has the cover paper!)
Sadly, I can‘t find my Misty of Chincoteague.

I‘m a little behind on my February reading for #ChildrensClassicRead2025 I love going down memory lane rereading a favorite book of mine and remembering when I got to watch The Great Lipizzan‘s perform. Here‘s an example of an Levade & a Caprriole- two Airs Above the Ground movements.
This book is a great way to learn about the horses and a fine example of self- actualization and working hard for your dreams.

3✨ I was wondering while reading this if I‘ve already read it or if many horse stories are the same. The difference with “The Black Stallion” or other horse stories I‘ve read is this one follows Smoky as he grows, becomes a bronco in rodeos, and ages out of that. The ending is what really excited me for this horse. #Roll100 February

Finished last night for Feb‘s #ChildrensClassicRead2025 I never really went through a horsey stage as a girl🤷🏻‍♀️but I can see the appeal. This was a good blend of history & the story of a boy who wants to train & ride the beautiful Lipizzaner stallions he sees everyday delivering for his family‘s bakery in Vienna. It has a good moral of hard work & daring to dream. I also learned a lot about horse training & these beautiful horses.
