It starts off with young Eric finally getting his hunting license. He's excited about getting to shoot when his parents get sent overseas to fight for their country. Eric is forced to move across the country to live with his grandparents who Eric dislikes. while his grandma was at church and grandpa was out working, a dog came across their yard covered in porcupine quills. Eric takes care of the dog but his grandpa wants her out of the house. 1/2

Regan.Weenk While his grandparents are out again, he heads out to the prairies with his dog to “live like the pioneers.“ This five-day adventure was full of learning experiences, but eventually, he heads home and is reunited with his grandparents, who are a lot more welcoming than before. This book is hard to picture in your head. The setting is just an old house and lots of flat prairie land, and it's a slower, thoughtful story. 2mo

I could just hear Little Ann and Old Dan howling in the book.

Of course, I did my own howling at the end.

CogsOfEncouragement One of my elementary school teachers read this to the class. This was the first sad book I had experienced. I remember wondering why she would put us through it. lol 3mo

I'm about half way through the book and its a very interesting book. It starts with a lot happening really quick. The book is a 1st person perspective from the main character, Eric. it starts off with Eric getting his hunters license to shoot birds. hes super excited about it, he is about to go hunting that weekend when his parents are called to go over seas to fight for their country. He has to go live with his grandparents. Go to comments.vvvv

Regan.Weenk After a long awkward trip with his grandparents they finally made it. When Eric gets up the next morning his Grandpa (Big Darrel) already left and his Oma is leaving for church. while he\'s home alone a dog wanders into their yard covered in porcupine quills. After they call the vet Eric tries to convince Big Darrel to let them keep it because they know the owners going to kill the dog for running out again. So Eric and the dog escape into the wild 3mo

Hunter and His Dog | Brian Wildsmith

Panpan

I‘m not quite sure how to feel about this book. In it a man adopts a puppy and teaches it to carry eggs in his mouth as well as fetch sticks. He‘s trying to be hunting dog. On the first hunting trip when the hunter shoots a duck, and the dog retrieves it the dog takes it to an island, and brings back a stick. Every time the hunter and the dog go out the dog does this. He has an island of her ducks.

LibrarianRyan The Hunter finds out and feels shame, so they nurse the ducks back together until he can release them healthy. Before I go farther, I should say the artist is amazing. It‘s unusual. It‘s unique and its quality perfectly sums up the discombobulated feeling left by the words of the book. It‘s nice that the hunter nurses these birds back to health, but it‘s horrible that he shot them to begin with. I have a problem with guns in picture books for kids 3mo
LibrarianRyan Hunting is a legitimate activity, and I understand that. But when animals are so often used to fableize humans, I would hate to think any little kids might get the idea to shoot someone and an adult can make it better. The US has a problem with guns. That is 100% the reason for my discombobulated feelings and I don‘t care if hunting is legitimate sports, I do not think guns of any type should be in a picture book.

The only reason this isn‘t a pan for me is that the author was a 20yo at the time the story takes place and thus his brain was clearly *not* fully formed. TW for the (sometimes senseless, often suffering) deaths of a number of wild animals. The author learned some life lessons, in a good way, but not before I wanted to throat punch him. Also: do not bring a dog along on your tale and then fail to keep me constantly updated on their wellbeing. 3⭐️

The Wilding: A Novel | Benjamin Percy

Pickpick

Just before a canyon is to be gutted for a development, Justin and his controlling father go there on a camping trip along with Justin‘s son. A tense weekend becomes more so when outside forces intrude. Both in the woods and at home with Justin‘s wife, Percy explores wildness and savagery within nature and ourselves. CW below under the spoiler tag for dog lovers.

Hooked_on_books The dog doesn‘t survive. It‘s off the page but still pretty upsetting. 5mo

This week I‘m choosing the Hometown Hunters series. These are short middle grade novels, each set in a fairly rural area with a focus on a hunting story. This also frequently means some outdoor adventure. They‘ve been great for some of my more reluctant readers who struggle to connect with many popular novels. I‘ve read some of this series and also have a fishing series by the same author.
