I was so excited to see this display today at Bookmarks in Winston-Salem, NC! I loved Get a Life, Chloe Brown, and now I REALLY want to read What Doesn't Kill You: A Life with Chronic Illness - Lessons from a Body in Revolt. #chronicillness #invisibleillness #fibro

Riveted_Reader_Melissa That does sound good! 3y

Shortlisted for the #ManBookerPrize, on the list of #1001books and yet I had never heard about this book before.

And that while it is really good. Told (so convincingly!) from the POV of an unstable but lovely 11-year old boy who considers himself a human lie detector. Because there are many lies in his family, even though his parents are trying to be honest. Painful and beautiful.

BarbaraBB @Kalalalatja I‘d be really interested to know what you would make of this invisible illness. I am definitely no psychologist and couldn‘t figure out if or what is the case with the boy in the book. 5y
Kalalalatja It sounds really good, and I have it stacked already! I really need to borrow/buy this soon, because I‘m getting more and more interested 👍 5y
BarbaraBB @Kalalalatja Don‘t bother, I‘ll send you my copy 🎄 5y

I liked this - a good story, complex characters, and a syndrome that I‘d never heard of before but seems awful. I‘m definitely reading the next book in this series. Thanks to the #booked2018 Goodreads group for the suggestion. And with this, I also finished my Goodreads challenge! #invisibleillness #goodreads

Abby Norman does an excellent job of portraying what it is like to live with endometriosis and chronic illness. From the dismissal of a woman‘s pain to the impact on daily life, this memoir nails it. I wish more men would pick up this book, to try to understand what it is like to live with this disease.

The only thing that kept it from a 5⭐️ read is the need for better editing. At times, it felt rambling.

RavenLovelyReads So....how‘s your uterus?? ( sorry- just couldn‘t help it 😜) 5y
alisiakae @RavenLovelyReads 😂😂 It‘s good today! Despite yesterday‘s appt with my specialist....those appt‘s are never fun! I had a major 🙄 at a GR review, the reader didn‘t like the book b/c it had the word uterus in the title. 🤨 5y
Cinfhen Sounds like an empowering read! Will definitely be picking this up 5y

Quirkybookworm I wish I had that book. Just had surgery done last yr but I suffered for years and many did not believe me until last year. I was pissed 😡. But I‘m pain free now! 5y
alisiakae @Cinfhen 👍👍 @Quirkybookworm I went through a similar situation, had surgery 2 yrs ago after years of symptoms. I‘m a lot better now, but may be facing another round of surgery eventually as pain is slowly returning, but still mostly managed with hormone medication. I‘m glad you‘re pain free! 🎉🎉🎉 (edited) 5y
RavenLovelyReads @4thhouseontheleft 😂😂 i understand! I read Cunt a few years ago...got plenty weird looks! This just got added to my TBR! 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Hey, my friend. Do you follow Abby on Instagram? She‘s @abbymnorman. It‘s interesting to see what‘s going on with her post-book, and she‘s very open about her health challenges. 5y

You know what makes me angry? Endometriosis is considered a common illness, yet fictional characters with endo, PCOS, or another uterine-related disease barely exist, not even in YA.

I‘m starting this memoir for the #Booked2018 #invisibleillness prompt, but I can‘t resist calling out the taboo that still seems to surround writing character‘s that deal with reproductive-related illness. It‘s overdue, and we esp. need to see it in YA. #endowarrior

ravenlee I need to see a YA heroine in a realistic fiction lash out at some jerk doctor who tells her the brutal periods she‘s having are just normal for her. Not that this ever happened to me. 6y
alisiakae @ravenlee YES. 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽 I was only taken seriously after I gave birth to my daughter, and I started telling doctors that my period pain was as severe as natural childbirth. That was a wake up call to me that what I had been dealing with for years was not, in fact, normal. 6y
ravenlee Wow! I started getting help in college, after one horribly traumatic gyn visit at 12 (with a male doctor who made me uncomfortable anyway) that made my mom and me stay away until I was 18. My best friend went to the ER every month for a shot of demerol through her last year of HS because she couldn‘t cope any other way. Cont 6y

ravenlee She found out, through a fluke of a pelvic exam by the college health services nurse, she has a bifurcated uterus, and was actually having two brutal periods at the same time. But it was just normal for her, up to that point. 6y
Reggie Have you ever read Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney? Her main character has it. She finds out in the beginning of the book and is always present. 6y
alisiakae @Reggie Thanks for the rec! I hadn‘t heard of that book before, and it didn‘t come up in any of my searches. Glad to know there‘s at least one character out there, I‘ll definitely check it out. 6y
alisiakae @ravenlee Wow. Kudos to the CHS nurse. That‘s the thing about pain, it can be hard to figure out when something isn‘t normal. I used to think I had a horribly low pain tolerance and that my periods were just like everyone else‘s and I just couldn‘t deal. 😣 (edited) 6y

This was such a captivating read...I was amazed how a gifted athlete, 3 time Olympian, wife and suburban mom found herself ranked as the number two paid escort in Las Vegas. More astonishing is the role her husband took throughout Suzy‘s ordeal, as he stood by and accepted his wife was sleeping with men and women for money, gifts and excitement. I read this for #booked2018 #OlympicSport #MentalHealthAwareness

Tamra 😲 6y
emilyhaldi Wow!! Sounds fascinating 6y
sammisho I had such a hard time with this book! 6y

Cinfhen I saw your review @sammisho I agree it was difficult to feel sorry for Suzy Favor Hamilton, she showed almost no remorse for what she put her family through and her husband's inactions were REALLY FRUSTRATING!!! I'm not judging but it was hard to wrap my head around the lack of concern...clearly the author's behavior was extreme! 6y
Cinfhen It was really shocking @Tamra @emilyhaldi but I understand it was the author's bipolar disease acting out 6y
sammisho @Cinfhen I am a social worker, and I definitely read from a mental health professional perspective. I was hoping for more insight on her treatment 6y
Cinfhen There wasn‘t any mention of that @sammisho ~ were you surprised by her husband‘s acceptance and willingness to just stand by and almost “support” her behavior? I was more surprised by that!?! 6y
sammisho @Cinfhen I could not believe it! It was so unhealthy, and a classic example of enabling. It was so hard to read it, knowing the damage her and his behaviors were creating. I still can't wrap my mind around it. 6y
Cinfhen Do most couples stay together @sammisho I was also surprised by that 6y
sammisho @Cinfhen I know there are people with bipolar disorder who maintain healthy relationships. I would assume it takes lots of couple therapy and individual therapy for both parties to make it happen. And bipolar does not always manifest itself in this kind of hyper-sexualized behavior. Not sure I could stick around. I honestly think Suzie's and her husband's relationship is unhealthy on multiple levels. 6y
Cinfhen Thanks for all the insight @sammisho 6y
Reviewsbylola This sounds good too! 6y
CaitlinR Wow, sounds fascinating. 6y
Cinfhen It's a quick read and would also work for #booked2018 #invisibleillness @Reviewsbylola @CaitlinR I read this through my library's #OverDrive 6y
