The #hashtagbtigade selection for May is #widesargassosea and we will read a chapter a day! Comment below if you are joining us for this book! Anyone can join at any time, just know that my hashtags are often ridiculous and always chapter spoilers, so don't read the post until you've read the chapter!

LitsyEvents ALSO I leave tomorrow for Europe so my posts will come at weird times of the day
I promise to post though!

julieclair Wait, didn‘t you just get back from Disney? I love your life! Enjoy! And… I am definitely in for May. This book has been on my TBR forever! 12h
BarkingMadRead @julieclair yeah 🤣 it‘s a crazy month, Disney with a friend and then an anniversary trip with the hubs. I do not recommend such a quick turnaround, it‘s super stressful 🤣 12h
currentlyreadinginCO Oh, I am in for sure - might be a few days late in starting but I'll catch up! Have the best time in europe! 12h
julieclair Yes, I imagine the packing and catching up on real life in between is stressful. But once you are buckled into your seat on the plane, all stress goes away and you can just look forward to the trip! Have a fabulous time! Where are you going? And Happy Anniversary! 😃💖 11h
BarkingMadRead @julieclair we booked a mystery trip, we are flying to London and we will find out where right before we get there. It‘s in an envelope on my island 😳 all we know is that it‘s a 2-4 hour flight from London 11h
jenniferw88 I'm not joining the buddy read, but as I'm limited to 4 hour flights, I'm going to guess some locations: Spain (or one of the Balearic Islands) or Greece (or one of it's islands). 😂 8h
rwmg I thought I read Wide Sargasso Sea quite recently but as it turns out to have been in 2013, perhaps it's time for a re-read. 7h
TheAromaofBooks I think I am going to pass on this one, but I'll be back for Little Women!!! Enjoy all your traveling - a mystery trip sounds both terrifying and fantastic haha 4h

Mehso-so

Although the premise was interesting the writing style of this novel was too erratic and jumped from idea to idea without any transition. I shouldn't have been surprised by the racism but that was another very unpleasant experience reading this.

The author's life experience was a huge inspiration for this, considering that she is of mixed race. (As an immigrant who moved a lot I can completely relate to all of that)

Doppoetry The novel tries to make Bertha a more sympathetic character but I can't exactly feel bad for colonizers and racists.

I am not a huge fan of Mr.Rochester but he does come off like an intelligent man, despite his temper. I believe it to be a disservice to him as a character in general. I think he could have figured out Bertha's family history with mental illness on his own without being tipped off about it.
(edited) 7d
Doppoetry I was hoping this novel would delve more into the mental illness aspect. But, it was more focused on blaming everything on Mr. Rochester and society's mistreatment of her, instead of a wider cause. (not that abuse can't make you mentally ill, sometimes mental illness runs in the family) (edited) 7d
Doppoetry There is absolutely a wider discussion about imperialism/colonialism here and I completely understand the harm of it, but I don't think it's presented very well in this novel. Rochester's opinions on the colonized Jamaica feel stretched a bit too far, even if you read between the lines of Jane Eyre. 7d

#ReadAway2024

My Saturday continues at the coffee shop for journaling & finishing my first book of April. Next to Pride and Prejudice & Jane Austen retellings, I love a good Jane Eyre revision. This one is YA, sapphic, & the main characters are Black. It does have that YA angst & I wish the characters were a bit more deeply drawn but I enjoyed it. Note: this is Bertha & Jane‘s story & if you need Mr. Rochester to be even an iota of good, it‘s ⬇️

DebinHawaii …not going to make you happy because (early in the book so not a spoiler) he‘s the big bad in this one. If you like a feminist spin & a non-crazy Bertha, you should like it. Love the author‘s note: “And to the Black girls brave enough to live and love for themselves, however that might look, you are queenly, indeed.” 💜💜💜 3w
5feet.of.fury I liked her Alice in Wonderland retelling, might have to see about this 3w

I enjoyed this witchy retelling of Jane Eyre very much. I have some quibbles with the retelling-ness (I didn‘t see why she should have changed Jane‘s pre-Lowood backstory and everything happened too fast) but the story, romance, witchcraft, and twist on what happened with Mr. Rochester‘s previous wife were all very satisfying. I‘ve always wanted a witchy Jane Eyre! I‘ll be on the lookout for more by this author.

A tentative thumbs up. I don‘t think Brontë would approve. The characters are very different from their models, but some of the story elements align. Once divorced from the source material in my mind, I was able to enjoy this book a lot more.

Here's a book with a premise I'm really excited about, by an author whose stuff I've not enjoyed in the past. Very curious to see how this one will go for me 🤔
