Ch 14: church, this reminded me of the second episode of LHOTP where the Rev lectures the wives because the husbands stayed home 🤣 #godunderstandsfarmers #somanycustoms #notmuchchanges #poormissellison #ripmarley #hashtagbrigade

TheBookHippie Can you remove me from the lists please. Thanks. 1mo

AllDebooks Poor Marley, that was sad 😔 1mo
BarkingMadRead @TheBookHippie for this book or the #hashtagbrigade as well? 1mo
TheBookHippie @BarkingMadRead For all of it thanks. 1mo
BarkingMadRead @TheBookHippie we will miss you! 1mo
TheBookHippie @BarkingMadRead sorry too much going on here!!! If I can pop back in I‘ll let you know. 1mo
TheAromaofBooks I love Laura going to the “weird“ church service just for something to do 😂 1mo
mcctrish @TheAromaofBooks me too. Actually I like this book whenever Laura is mentioned, then it feels like a story and less like an accounting 1mo
willaful @mcctrish Yes, that helps. 1mo
Bookwormjillk @mcctrish you are so right 1mo
dabbe @mcctrish Bam! That's the word for this book. It's an ACCOUNTING of every single aspect of daily life. I'm close to saying #uhCOUNTmeout! 😂 1mo
mcctrish @Bookwormjillk what really funny is I did my reading at school today during silent reading time. I have this and my Sunday Buddy Read on my kindle and I decided I‘d knock my chapter off using the kindle app on my phone. But it was queued up to Grand Hotel and I was so perplexed as to where the German dancer came from and who was he backing into a corner 1mo
mcctrish @dabbe I mean, it certainly is a glimpse into a day in the life but my god it‘s dry as toast 1mo
TheAromaofBooks @mcctrish - It's true!! I honestly can't decide whether or not I like this book!? But I love the more personal glimpses we get with Laura's opinions/thoughts/actions vs. the overview. 1mo
KAO I found it remarkable that there was a lot to say about the role of church (including the rector‘s practices outside of services) in this hamlet. Nowhere near this amount of detail was given about school! Then again, the actual church building was often located at the center of a village (or is that true only in Germany, Austria, and other European countries where I‘ve seen it so often?). I can imagine how the church was figuratively central too. 1mo
KAO I do agree that my interest is sparked when I get a glimpse of Laura or Edmund‘s behaviors! Or of particular background stories on occasionally introduced characters. Poor Rev. Marley! 1mo

Cuilin I may be in the minority here, but I‘m loving this book. It‘s like looking at a huge pastoral painted masterpiece and seeing all the details. 2mo

Bookwormjillk @Cuilin I actually don‘t mind it but I think it would be better read in chunks or all at once. To me chapter a day is kind of weird for a book like this. 2mo
dabbe I did love reading the songs today. They were like ballads--or maybe they were actually ballads. 😂 2mo
mcctrish It‘s just a lot of words setting the scene for an episode of All Creatures Great and Small imo and I‘d like it to start already 2mo
willaful @dabbe It's definitely ballads! I'm interested in folk music, so I enjoyed this chapter. I recognized a few of these because they made it to Appalachia and Jean Ritchie sang them. 2mo
Bookwormjillk I was trying to figure out the tunes for each one but in my mind they all sounded like Chumbawumba. 2mo
dabbe @willaful 🤩🤗🤩 2mo
dabbe @Bookwormjillk 🤩😂🤗 2mo
Bklover @Cuilin The way this is written reminds me of the early Little House books minus any drama. The difference being the target audience. 2mo
willaful @Bookwormjillk Here's a bit of Jean Ritchie singing Lord Lovell: https://folkways.si.edu/jean-ritchie/lord-lovel/american-folk-old-time-world/mus...

And here's a version of “False Sir John“: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAT5mDCwKpE

KAO I enjoyed some of the songs that I found on YouTube—especially “The Outlandish Knight”! https://youtu.be/bq6RldgW7NQ?si=bX_O2D6mjk1HasWB (edited) 2mo
KAO @Cuilin I‘m with you! I‘m enjoying the book so far (though I‘m not usually so patient with long descriptions), and the word “pastoral” seems perfect. Maybe it‘s just what my anxious mind needs right now! 2mo
Cuilin @KAO exactly, it‘s so relaxing. 2mo
julieclair @Cuilin I love your perspective! I think I need to change the lens through which I have been viewing this book. 1mo
