Happy October #Pemberlittens! It's time for Emma 'Now' - reading an adaptation or retelling of the classic or watching a movie. You're choice! look forward to seeing what everyone chooses. Myself first up is ARC I've been saving for October. (Publication date is 11-25-25). Book 2 of the Emma Knightley Mysteries. I've read the 1st chapter and I'm hooked.

What's your plan for October?

And were off! I'm planning mostly to listen to #HashtagBrigade Chapter a Day of Frankenstein. I do have a Kindle copy as well. Last time I read was back in 2018 when I joined IRL friend in reading books from the Great American Read. Looking forward to the hashtags and memes!

@BarkingMadRead

ElizaMarie I just listened to today's as well. I could have sworn I had a few physical copies of Frankinstien, but I can't seem to find them. Of course, I could do a better job cleaning/looking for them, but for the time being, I am gonna do #Audible too :) 1d

When it's the last day of the month and you realize you haven't read a #ThematicCozies, you scroll through your kindle looking for something short that fits the prompt of #Books. This had a bit of mystery and bookstore in the title. Bonus @julieclair it was enjoyable. 📚

#Pemberlittens it's time for Emma discussion! Her are my answers:
1️⃣ 5 total. 4X since beginning to track my reading on Goodreads in 2017 and then once as a teenager. I swapped between the gorgeously summery tagged edition & early autumnal Signature Gilded classic edition. Finished up with Juliet Stevenson audio.
2️⃣ My perspective changed after reading article about as a caretaker she tied to her home parenting her parent. Loveable snob. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig 3️⃣ Mr Knightley. He's a bit grumpy and bossy at times. But he is kind. I love how he decides to move into Emma‘s home rather than upset Mr. Woodhouse.
Least favorite - Frank Churchill. He's such a cad! Yes he's hiding his engagement but that doesn't mean he needs to flirt so much with Emma. And he hides his mean-spiritedness with charm.⬇️
2d
Crinoline_Laphroaig 4️⃣ Strawberry picking at Donwell is my favorite. I hope one day to plan something inspired by it for my blueberries. Picnic at Box Hill is so cringy. Emma and Frank are horrible.
5️⃣ It's funny how often great quotes are given to unlikeable characters.
“Ah! there is nothing like staying at home for real comfort.” - Mrs Elton
“No coffee, I thank you, for me — never take coffee. — A little tea if you please,” - Miss Bates. ⬇️

2d
Crinoline_Laphroaig 6️⃣ Harriet is so easily swayed that sensible Robert Martin will be a good influence on her. I understand why Jane Fairfax accepted Frank Churchill. But I'm not certain she'll be all that financially secure,he will probably lose the fortune. Also feel he will lose interest in her, cheat, and make her life miserable. ⬇️

2d
See All 10 Comments
Crinoline_Laphroaig Emma and Knightley will be happy I think. With Knightley being so much older she will end up being a rich widow and go back to her busybody match-making ways and turn into a holy terror.

7️⃣ Miss Bates because she's harmless. Mrs. E will run your life.
8️⃣ I take the gruel! When Harriet couldn't make up her mind on ribbon or where to send had me yelling ‘JUST MAKE A DECISION‘ at the audiobook.⬇️
2d
Crinoline_Laphroaig 9️⃣ I love the relationship between the Knightley brothers: “How d‘ye do, George?” and “John, how are you?” succeeded in the true English style, burying under a calmness that seemed all but indifference, the real attachment which would have led either of them, if requisite, to do every thing for the good of the other.”

*October means it's time for #EverythingEmma ‘Now‘ retellings and adaptations. 🎩📖👒
#janeaustenthenandnow
2d
eeclayton I agree about Jane and Frank, not a good match. He seems primarily interested in her looks, not in her person. 2d
Bookwormjillk Yes on everything you said about Frank Churchill! 2d
willaful @Crinoline_Laphroaig Kind of like how Polonius from Hamlet is so often quoted! 2d

How goes your September? Have you finished reading this month's 'Then' - Emma? I've just started. But I did add the very autumnal Signature Gilded Edition to my collection. (I'm up to 9 Emmas.) As well as the very summery Mansfield Park. Peacock Pride and Prejudice is my favorite. Now if only Northanger Abbey would be released. 🦚📖 📚

September means it's time for Emma. My print collection is up to 8. It's a busy month for me. Rather than committing to 2 chapters a day, I'm going to read as I can and listen some.

None of my editions are in the Litsy database so I'll need to add. What edition will you be reading?

#Pemberlittens how was your August? Caught up on Rational Creatures & Dangerous To Know Anthologies. Really enjoyed NA & MP stories.

MP movie changed important things so it wasn't really in the spirit of Jane. But if you ignored that it was good.

Tagged book is part of Murder on Location series. Not MP but I enjoyed.

Jane Was Here was a delight!

Jane's part of The Watsons was brilliant. Continuation was mediocre.

BarkingMadRead I ended up bailing on mine. 1mo
willaful I can't bring myself to watch that version of Mansfield Park. I'd like to read Jane Was Here, if I can find it.

My read was The Rushworth Family Plot, which I enjoyed more than any since the first book. I feel the Edmund and Fanny she writes is a little OTT, but close enough it doesn't bother me. The romance is heating up and also starcrossed! And there's some fun comeuppances. 😋

My favorite things in this series is the locations, this time Bath, Jane Austen mentions, and the ongoing romance.

I've been gradually working my way thru. This was perfect for this month's #ThematicCozies theme of Travel. I'll return to it @julieclair for December's Holiday prompt.

julieclair I'm so glad you're enjoying this series. It really does sound good. I like the idea that each book is set in a different location. 1mo

#Pemberlittens Here's Mansfield Park Discussion Questions. I changed them up a bit because I know MP is a harder read than other Austen and a bit of a struggle sometimes. I'll post my answers later. It's hot. I was out early in the garden watering everything! It's currently 96F/35C. I need a nap. 🤤

Crinoline_Laphroaig I forgot to tag everyone earlier. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 2mo
See All 8 Comments
Crinoline_Laphroaig 1️⃣ Reread. Print and Audiobook narrated by Juliet Stevenson. I first read it as a teenager and hated it. When rereading years later, I realized why younger me disliked it. Back then I was painfully shy. (I know! Hard to believe now.) My home was just as chaotic as the Price's and I had a Mrs Norris in my life. It was just too familiar. Rereading through older eyes, I appreciate Fanny‘s quiet strength of character. 2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 2️⃣ I realized reading this time that MP has all the worst characters in Austen. Henry Crawford plays with people's feelings. Mary Crawford constantly excuses his behavior. Selfish Maria and Julia. But the absolute worst is Mrs Norris! Her petty stinginess. She's a know-it-all and is just plain spiteful and cruel. 2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 3️⃣ I love all the discussion of improvements and garden references. Which brings me to ….

4️⃣ “and standing back, well shaded and sheltered, and looking over a ha-ha into the park, was a comfortable-sized bench, on which they all sat down.” I love ha-ha!

“to sit in the shade on a fine day, and look upon verdure, is the most perfect refreshment.” As a gardener I appreciate a place in the shade to admire.

2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 5️⃣ Lady B just baffles me. There doesn't appear to be anything wrong with her. Also was she like this when Lord B was courting her?

6️⃣ The Play! As I always think of it is bad. Mr Rushworth is silly but just wants to be part of the gang so I feel sorry for him. But Edmund droning on would be the worst. Especially when he's all lovesick puppy over Mary Crawford.
2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 7️⃣ Henry, Maria, and Mrs Norris all deserve one another.

8️⃣ MP is never going to be my favorite Austen. Edmund is no Mr Darcy or Henry Tilney. I think he will just be more of a sanctimonious prig as he ages. I hope older Fanny learns to speak up for herself, the way I did. It's a wonderful feeling!

August means it's time for retellings, adaptations, and inspired by Mansfield Park.📚

Crinoline_Laphroaig I particularly hate the way Mr Price calls Fanny 'Fan'. It would be different if it was an endearment but I honestly think he's just too lazy to say her complete name. Also who are you to judge? You're an idler who spends all your time looking at ships rather than providing for your family. 😡 2mo

Cover caught my eye read. Reminded me of a modern day Rosamund Pilcher novel but with more sex.

Beautiful setting on a lake in Canada, spunky grandmother and clueless young woman. Main characters in their 30s but we're trying to relive their teenage years at the lake so they acted about 17 most of the time. Complete with blushing when a cute boy speaks and I like this girl so I'll constantly tease her. 👇

Crinoline_Laphroaig The 'why we can't be together' and have more than a summer fling was predictable miscommunication trope.

Neither loved nor hated. It's not a book I would read again or feel the need to purchase, so library loan was fine. But it was pleasant diversion for reading on the porch last Saturday with San Pellogrino Pomegranate Spritz.

#Pemberlittens I had issues with how Jonathan's dad the ORIGINAL Mr Darcy was portrayed. Because of that I gave it 3 stars on Goodreads. My full slightly spoilery Review in comments. 🎩

#JaneAustenThenAndNow

Crinoline_Laphroaig I don't read these books for the mystery. I read them for Juliet Tilney and Jonathan Darcy. Reasons for keeping them separated is very convoluted. Also I don't like that it's because of Mr Darcy! ⬇️

3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig Mr Darcy who had such character growth in Pride and Prejudice and married for love. There's no reason a man who ended up with Lydia as a sister in law and Mrs Bennet as a mother in law would disapprove of Juliet Tilney as a daughter in law. She not a golddigger. Her family is respectable and while not Pemberly rich, they are not poor. Juliet is smart, likeable but most importantly she truly cares for Jonathan. Mr Darcy wouldn't act this way.

Crinoline_Laphroaig Will I continue to read this series? Absolutely! I'm waiting for the happy ever after. 3mo
willaful Hmmm, wondering now if I should skip this one and just wait for the HEA. ;-) They've been going downhill for me. 3mo

#AllTheStoriesAreTrue had reached modern day and I got in mood to binge. Between print, kindle, & audio this month I've already read 3 short stories, 2 extras, & main books:

Son of Dawn
Not for Humans
City of Bones
Kissed
The Course of True Love and First Dates
What to Buy the Shadowhunter Who Has Everything
City of Ashes
City of Glass
⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig Up next are the The Mortal Instruments Graphic Novels for City of Bones, City of Ashes, and City of Glass. I may finish those this month or wait until July. ➰️

This was a fun graphic novel of Northanger Abbey.

Mid-month check in. Read any good Northanger Abbey retellings? Anything you've hated?

Andrea313 Northranger by Rex Ogle was lots of fun, and I'm enjoying Ghosted so far. But I did a re-read of the following and any silly charm it may have once held drastically faded into sheer stupidity: 4mo

#Pemberlittens my final quote: "I leave it to be settled by whomsoever it may concern, whether the tendency of this work be altogether to recommend parental tyranny, or reward filial disobedience." FINIS

It's been an absolute joy to reread Northanger Abbey. I love Chapter a Day Readalongs because you savour a story. I always discover something new. Answers in comments.

Crinoline_Laphroaig 1️⃣ According to Goodreads, this is my 6th time reading since 2017. I'm sure I've read it more than that. I love it every time. Mostly I read print. Few chapters of audio. Juliet Stevenson does a wonderful job.

2️⃣ My love of Henry Tilney is well documented.

3️⃣ Henry coming to make sure Catherine is okay and propose. And of course the Garden Tour. I do love a garden tour. 👇
4mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 4️⃣ “The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid.” See 3rd picture for proof of my love.

5️⃣ Technically I should have made this a curricle. Take the ride, get carriage sick and throw up on Dude Bro Thorpe. Perhaps this will end his affections.

6️⃣ Snooping! Henry will forgive me. 👇
4mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 7️⃣ In this instance since Fred is the heir, that would mean that Isabella would have power over me. So give her to James. The fool deserves her for bullying Catherine.

8️⃣ I'll be having a nice pleasant tea at Woodston with Eleanor, Catherine, and Henry. We will talk books. I'll try not to sigh every time Henry speaks. 👇

Pick Me Princess Isabella
Dude Bro John Thorpe
The Fool - James Moreland
And General Stinky - Tilney

Can you just imagine 20 years on, Catherine getting a silly idea, and Henry saying ‘Remember that time you thought my father murdered my mother? 😆

4mo
willaful He will hold it over her just like I do my husband putting the raw chicken away in a drawer 40 years ago. 😂 4mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @willaful if you've been together any length of time, you got one of these. 😆 4mo

"Some explanation on his father‘s account he had to give; but his first purpose was to explain himself, and before they reached Mr. Allen‘s grounds he had done it so well, that Catherine did not think it could ever be repeated too often" Henry Tilney‼️?

This chapter always makes me angry. General putting Catherine out of the house. Sending her home with any escort. Single women didn't travel without at least man servant. Plus Catherine is young, she's never been anywhere. Thankfully Elinor thinks to ask if Catherine has money for the trip.

“If I understand you rightly, you had formed a surmise of such horror as I have hardly words to——Dear Miss Morland, consider the dreadful nature of the suspicions you have entertained." - Henry Tilney

We all know where Catherine got her ideas from. I glad Henry called her out for skulking but I also find the "Remember that we are English," part hilarious.

May #ThematicCozies: Flowers/ Garden. I love how in cozy mysteries small towns have everything. Bookstore, bakery, yoga studio, fitness center, etc.

Enjoyable read. Little unbelievable how police handled murder inquiry. Not bumbling which would have made story silly but bit lackadaisical. But it works because it's a cozy. Will continue to read seasonally. And will pick on for June Prompt: Celebrations.

@julieclair
*Add to Litsy.

julieclair I think it would be fun to live in a cozy mystery small town. Without the murders, of course! 😂 4mo
