#PemberLittens Stumbled upon this while searching for Sense and Sensibility Retellings for #JaneAustenThenAndNow.

Author seems to have disappeared in 2023.
From her abandoned Blog "Welcome to Twisted Austen, my annual event conceived in the spirit of Halloween, but which really just serves to infuriate and confuse my fellow Janeites.⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig That‘s not being totally fair to myself. Some readers do actually seem to really like these stories, but I write them for my own amusement. It‘s a space where I can explore ideas that really aren‘t marketable."⬇️ 4d
Crinoline_Laphroaig A Sense and Sensibility with this the only mention of Colonel Brandon "It was soon learned that Mr. Ferrars had married Miss Steele, an act made possible by the generosity of an acquaintance procured in Devonshire, one Colonel Brandon, who, despite having no interest in the couple beyond pity for the treatment they had endured, had given Edward the living attached to his estate of Delaford in Dorsetshire."⬇️ 4d
Crinoline_Laphroaig ⬆️Now that is a thing of horror. 4d
bookandbedandtea "Twisted Austen" indeed! Any story in which Edward ends up married to Lucy would be too painful. 4d

#PemberLittens it's your Mid Month Check In for #JaneAustenThenAndNow.

I was trying to think of General Discussion Questions for 'Now' books. And this is the main one. Add Zombies or set in Space as long as it maintains the spirit.

What does bug me is when Author doesn't do their research. Things like I'll just pop down to bookstore and buy a 1st edition of Pride& Prejudice.

What makes or breaks a 'Now' book for you?

Crinoline_Laphroaig Tagged book is great Austen Inspired book, that I just loved. 4d

TheBookHippie Stupidity and or not intelligent writing. I think they assume Austen is “bubble gum” and misconstrue her intelligence!!!! The fluff is 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫. I‘ve yet to read one I like 😂🤪🤷🏻‍♀️😮‍💨🙃🤫😱😝😅 4d
BarkingMadRead So far mine isn‘t much like the original, but I‘m not too deep into it, so I hope that changes 4d
willaful @TheBookHippie agreed! And I hate when they miss the point of her books. Or just want to add sex. I have read some continuations I like, and some retellings, where there's actually an interesting new take. 4d
Crinoline_Laphroaig @willaful @TheBookHippie yes! And some are just cash grabs that you can tell author knows nothing of Austen. 4d
TheBookHippie @Crinoline_Laphroaig Oh for sure cash grabs!! Happens to Bronte as well as Shakespeare.. 4d
bookandbedandtea @TheBookHippie I agree that some authors don't credit Austen- or her characters- with much intelligence and tend to write "bubblegum" stories. For me, if the similar names are stripped away, I have to be able to recognize the characters. They must act like themselves, despite whatever new circumstances the retelling finds them in. 4d
TheBookHippie @Crinoline_Laphroaig OMG. All of that. It‘s why I typically don‘t pick them up. 3d
bookandbedandtea @Crinoline_Laphroaig @TheBookHippie That book sounds dreadful! I'm making a note to avoid it. 😣 3d
TheBookHippie @bookandbedandtea I have lists like that!!! 😂 3d
AnishaInkspill I tried it with one, but I had to stop in how it undermined Jane Austen's intelligent. 3d
CaramelLunacy @Crinoline_Laphroaig Oh, I remember how much I hated Me and Mr Darcy... 1d

Sweet read about never being too old for love. Dual Timeline of 1922 and 1987. Twenties period was interesting mix of wanting a career in a typically male field of Pharmacist and Modern medicine vs Apothecary. I really liked that 'Modern Day' was late eighties before cell phones and air travel was easier. Yes, there was a bit of 'wow everyone ended up at the same retirement community in Boca, but it all came together in the end.⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig My favorite thing was retirement community book club was discussing Sense and Sensibility. Which was a fun tie end to #JaneAustenThenAndNow. 5d

Started this Series for 2024's #SeasonalCozies so I picked final book for February #ThematicCozies Prompt Romance.

All in all, I enjoyed this series. Quick reads. I do wish there'd been a bit of Romance between Torie and Detective Mallard.

While there were several mentions of Easter Scavenger Hunt, it doesn't appear author is continuing series. Which is fine. Juniper's continued provoking of Det D was getting old.

julieclair Congrats on finishing the series! 😀 2w

#Pemberlittens I had so much fun in reading S&S!

📖 Elinor & Marianne's relationship is such a big part of S & S. For February I'm reading story focusing on Jane & Cassandra. Also I wanted to reread before May 4th PBS Premiere. Audiobook is read by fabulous Juliet Stevenson so I'll mostly listen. But it's nice to have a print copy to refer to.

#Pemberlittens it's time for our first discussion of 2025!

You can answer here or make your own post. Please remember to tag me so I don't miss your posts. And search #JaneAustenThenAndNow to see others posts.

I share my answers in comments and then tag everyone. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig 1️⃣ I first read Sense & Sensibility
after discovering Pride & Prejudice. Probably when I was about 15 so 1981? For my 7X reading. I read my beautiful Signature Gilded Edition.

Forgotten that a lot of the book takes place in January. I love reading seasonally.

Most struck by the fact that I am now older than Mrs Dashwood (40) and Colonel Brandon (35)!⬇️

3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig 2️⃣ Colonel Brandon always and forever. For all my Love of P & P; I must say that S & S has one the best literary heroes in Brandon. Now when I read this classic I always see him as the perfection, that is Alan Rickman from the movie. A quiet unobtrusive man for the most part. However, when you need a Hero he always comes through. ⬇️

3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig 3️⃣ The big Mrs Ferrars reveal. Such a great plot twist! Although we all knew that Lucy was a conniving bit of baggage.

3w
See All 22 Comments
Crinoline_Laphroaig 4️⃣“But he talked of flannel waistcoats,” said Marianne;" ⬇️ 3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig “It is not every one,” said Elinor, “who has your passion for dead leaves.”⬇️ 3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig Know your own happiness. You want nothing but patience— or give it a more fascinating name, call it hope.⬇️ 3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig 5️⃣ I'm going to take the lock of hair, but always say it's in my ‘other‘ pocketbook because I immediately threw it away. Hair EWE!

6️⃣ I'm an open book sort of person so I wouldn't be good at the drama of secret love. I'll take dashing and flirty until it goes too far and then I'll dump them. ⬇️
3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig 7️⃣ I'm definitely an Elinor. For all my love of silly hats, I'm practical. Marianne wears me out. I always feel that Colonel Brandon could have done better. But, I'm always so happy when Marianne finally realizes that Colonel Brandon is way better than Willoughby.

8️⃣ Colonel Brandon obviously, Elinor because when would be great friends, and Mr. Palmer for snarky comments. ⬇️

3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig 9️⃣ Lessons learned while reading:
Never ever throw yourself at a man.
Don't let your daughter go to the Sin City that is Bath.
Cheap rent often isn't.

📖Next it's choose your own Austen Adventure. Read any adaptation, a topic that interests you or watch a movie. I'll be sharing my picks on February 1st.🎩

(edited) 3w
Librarybelle I‘m hoping to finish this up in the next couple of days, so I‘ll come back to the questions! But, this is a reread for me, and I‘m not sure what number…maybe 4 or 5… 3w
dabbe Fun and insightful questions! 🤩🤩 3w
peanutnine Love these questions! I'll post my answers soon but I agree that Colonel Brandon could have done better. I'm going to read this adaptation next 3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @peanutnine that one has been on my stack for awhile. 3w
bookandbedandtea These are good questions! I've been thinking about my answers but won't have time to post until late tonight or tomorrow. I'm thinking of reading this for February, though it does sound like it focuses more on the Marianne character 🤔 3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @bookandbedandtea no worries! Join in when you can. I think I have Jane if Austin on my Kindle. 3w
julieclair Still reading, but I can answer some of these great questions now: 1️⃣ Reread, maybe the 4th time? I am less tolerant of Marianne than I was when I was younger. 2️⃣ Colonel Brandon, for sure. 4️⃣ The dead leaves quote made me laugh out loud! 5️⃣ Ummm… neither. Thanks anyway. 6️⃣ Secret love. 7️⃣ Elinor absolutely. 8️⃣ Colonel Brandon, Elinor, and do I have to invite a 3rd? Maybe Margaret? Definitely not Mrs. Jennings. Insufferable woman. (edited) 3w
julieclair 9️⃣ I love this book. Totally enjoyed this reread! It‘s been too long since I last read it. My February read will be (edited) 3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @julieclair I'm glad you enjoyed! I think I need to add Jane of Austin to my stack. 3w
AnishaInkspill fantastic questions, I will answer separately as soon a I g a chance and tag you in 2w

After reading the very depressing Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont, I needed a happier read. Loved this! I highlighted so many great quotes. A few of my favorites:

"She appeared to have jumped out of the frying pan of sexism and into the fire of ageism. The final frontier of isms.

“Mature?!?” said Daphne. “Good grief, I‘m not a cheese. Or a herbaceous border." ?

More in the comments.

Crinoline_Laphroaig “These aren‘t representative bosoms, you know, Kylie,” said Daphne, who was taking her role as educator and protector most seriously. “Genuine breasts come in all manner of shapes and sizes. As do noses, and eyebrows and teeth. That is the beauty of real women. They‘re unique! These women have all spent an absolute fortune having painful, often downright dangerous procedures to make themselves look identical and forgettable......⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig You, my friend, must always remember you are perfect just as you are. Do you understand?”

It was time to venture outdoors. He needed to buy some supplies. Just the major food groups: tea, milk, chocolate Hobnobs, and whiskey.⬇️

Lots of people found this funny. The have someone impersonate your grandson was. But on the whole I just found it horribly depressing. 😒

Crinoline_Laphroaig So after this I wanted a happier read so I read 1mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig And this from Acknowledgements rang true: "It often feels like the only role of a pensioner in fiction is that of a sad, lonely, hopeless technophobe, adrift in modern society, who is then saved by the kindness of a younger person. Well, bollocks to that, as Daphne might say. That‘s not the kind of senior I intend to be, nor the one I want to read about. I wanted to create older characters who are bossing it."

CaramelLunacy @Crinoline_Laphroaig oof, they are constantly picking at people, aren't they. I'm sure they think of it as kind, but using the Dashwoods to distract themselves from their own boredom is a lot when the power dynamic already makes them quite beholden. 1mo

#Pemberlittens a bit of #JaneAustenThenAndNow from yesterday's reading of Chapter 19 - Then. I had forgotten the circumstances when this was said and whi said it. Wise words from Mrs Dashwood? That's not something I associate with her.

And the 'Now' ⬇️......

Crinoline_Laphroaig "The fruity truth: My favorite English author is Jane Austen. So, to borrow a passage from Sense and Sensibility: “You want nothing but patience—or give it a more fascinating name, call it hope.” To paraphrase: I hope to see you put your green American money where your filthy mouth is soon. #Pemberlittens every year I pick a Daily Quote book to start my day with. Picked tagged for #JaneAusten250. Couldn't find any reviews, took a chance because it was only $5.95.

Cover is gorgeous. Format not my favorite. For instance, today is Day 5, not January 5. Annoying later in the year when you're just trying to find your place not having to do math with your morning tea. Also it doesn't appear that quotes are based on seasons. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig While I'll continue to read, I'm thinking I'm going to write my own in Jane Austen Novel Journal. It will be a lovely little keepsake for me. I can also record events I participate in, books I read and important dates. 🫖📖 ✍️

My first read of 2025! I've been using both StoryGraph and Goodreads for last couple of years. SG just seems to be getting better. They keep adding things I love like this Reading Calendar. Also like that if a book is missing you can add it yourself. Plus you can make your own challenges.

Crinoline_Laphroaig @Deblovestoread @Librarybelle @julieclair same! I got up this morning excited to start. @Graciouswarriorprincess I've got you on the list. 2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @staci.reads I was having trouble with your tag. 2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig For those who use Storygraph I just made a Challenge there:
https://app.thestorygraph.com/profile/crinolinelaphroaig
2mo
staci.reads @Crinoline_Laphroaig I don't know why that is happening, but the same thing happens in another challenge I am tagged in, and then I don't always get notifications. Keep me tagged, but I'll check the hashtag periodically, too, so I don't miss out! Thanks! 2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @staci.reads I think it's the period between Staci and Reads. When I tag you individually on Litsy works fine. But when I Copy my list of Participants from Google doc and paste in Litsy, tagging stops with staci. Maybe try adjusting your name to something without a period. Just a thought. 2mo
SarahBookInterrupted Tag me and I joined the StoryGraph challenge too. 2mo
Andrea313 Will you add me? I'm excited to start tomorrow! 2mo
Sace Could you add me to the tag list? I might be more of a lurker but I‘d love to keep up with announcements etc. 2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @Sace Will do! I want this to be restful not stressful readalong. That's why I decided as host to not make it that I have to post everyday. Join in whenever/whatever way works for you. 1mo

My answers:
1️⃣ Reread. I first read several years ago and have often revisited. When choosing books, I knew was perfect for December. Short stories are wonderful during the busy holiday season. Plus there's something for everyone. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig 2️⃣ Continuations and Filling in the Gaps. I don't like when Jane's original stories are tampered with. I prefer the Regency Period but make it different. I feel like Modern Day Retellings are the hardest, especially Pride and Prejudice. A woman isn't going to starve in the hedgerows these days because they didn't get married.

3️⃣ Anne de Bourgh is definitely plotting and or waiting for when she inherits Rosings Park to go absolutely wild. ⬇️
2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 4️⃣ Mistletoe Mismanagement by Elizabeth Adams. I love seeing Elizabeth and Darcy happy together at Pemberley.

5️⃣ I have 3. Inspiration for book:
"I went up to the Great House between three and four, and dawdled away an hour very comfortably.” Jane wrote in a letter to her sister Cassandra.⬇️

2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig “No, dear, they are coming with us to Rosings. I need all these books if we are to spend a fortnight there,” Elizabeth replied. - By A Lady by Lona Manning

“Really? You can march against Napoleon, but you cannot find a way to talk to a lady in your cousin‘s home? I fear for England!” Mistletoe Mismanagement by Elizabeth Adams

6️⃣ Lady Catherine. At least could escape and walk the gardens of Rosing.⬇️
2mo

Crinoline_Laphroaig 7️⃣. I love that these stories edited by
have proceeds benefiting Chawton Great House. The former home of Jane Austen's brother Edward and is now the Centre for the Study of Early Women's Writing. Just a short walk from Chawton Cottage a place Jane often visited.⬇️
2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig And that's a wrap on 2024! Join me in January for #JaneAustenThenAndNow Book Club celebrating the 250th Anniversary of Jane Austen's Birth when we read Sensibility and Sensibility. I'll be back later with more details.

2mo
julieclair 1️⃣ First read, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I listened on audio while in the car, and the short story format was perfect. 2mo
julieclair 2️⃣ Continuations and Filling in the gaps, for the same reason you stated. Jane‘s original stories are sacrosanct. I do enjoy modern settings, though. 2mo
julieclair I didn‘t really have a favorite story - I enjoyed them all. And I didn‘t write down any favorite quotes because I was driving, but I remember laughing out loud at the Napoleon quote you referenced above! 😂 2mo
julieclair 6️⃣ Mrs. Bennet for sure. I have known several people in my life just like her, and have learned to tune them out! 🙉😂 2mo
julieclair 7️⃣ I agree… I love that the proceeds benefit Chawton Great House. I actually plan to purchase a physical copy because of that. 2mo
julieclair What a fun reading year we have had together! Thanks for hosting, and picking such great books. I‘m excited for #JaneAustenThenAndNow ! 💙😃💙 2mo
julieclair @mcctrish (correcting the spelling in the tag list above) 😘 2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @julieclair so much fun! And this was great one to end 2024 on 2mo

Grace Notes | Alexandra Stoddard

Mehso-so

I was looking forward to something like Grace Notes in Living A Beautiful Life. The practical things like setting a pretty table and making your bath your own private oasis. This was more meditations and deep thoughts. I ended up using it as an On This Day quote journal. Because of that I will keep and refer back to. The actual book bored me. I've already finish up the year of writing holiday quotes and yearly reminders in it. 😒 #myyearinbooks

Crinoline_Laphroaig Living a Beautiful Life was one of the first books I ever read on making a house a home. Growing up in a dysfunctional family, clutter and chaos was the norm. It was life changing for twentysomething me. My well-loved copy had all my favorite things highlighted. When I looked at it I always focused on those notes.

Rereading replacement copy, all these years later, I'm surprised at how many things have become part of my routines.

Winter Solstice is such a comfort read for me. I love reading along the December Timeline. After the family Christmas party last night I settled down by the fire with the last of my Peaty Whisky Advent Calendar - The Balvinie 14 Year Old - The Week of Peat and read the Christmas Eve chapter. 🥃

#Pemberlittens 📢 Cover Reveal‼️
I'm part of Austenprose Celebration of the next book Mr Darcy and Miss Tilney series. I love seeing Elizabeth & Darcy's son and Catherine & Henry Tilney's daughter's adventures.

Plenty of time to catch up on the series. Release Date is June 17 2025. #JaneAustenThenAndNow Book Club is reading Mansfield Park in July. Great choice for August Adaptations. 🎩

Timeline Readalong - Elfrida vs The Toaster.

I love how Rosamunde Pilcher takes everyday life and turns it into a story. Elfrida wanting to buy a toaster but worrying about the cost. You see how her decision to move to Scotland affected her finances.

Hardback (Flowers in the Snow Cover)pgs 153 - 174
Paperback (Red Coat Cover)pgs 229 - 262
Kindle (Snowflake)pgs 173 - 197

#Pemberlittens last #JaneAdjacent Book Club read of 2024‼️ #JaneAustenThenAndNow begins in January.

When choosing books for #12MonthsOfJane I knew Yuletide was perfect for December. Short stories are wonderful during the busy holiday season. Plus there's something for everyone. And I love that it benefits Chawton Great House. Grab your copy and enjoy over the festive season. Discussion Post will be up December 30th. 🎁

It's always hard for a sequel to live up to expectations. Especially a book as beloved as The House in the Cerulean Sea. My favorite thing was seeing the Baker-Parnassus family being happy.

#Pemberlittens It's time for #JaneAdjacent Book Club. My answers:
1️⃣ Print Copy. I wanted a Northanger Abbey retelling for this month. November just seems the perfect time
for Northanger Abbey. Cover caught my eye. I just love it! Didn't realize the setting is November. Or that it was Time Travel.

2️⃣ I really liked Mr Austen in the past story.

3️⃣ Love a Book Fair!

⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig 4️⃣ ‘Oh, you like Jane Austen…..
Yes I believe many men do, though some people think she's an author just for girls, I suppose.

Unbelievable, Who on earth would think like that?‘

5️⃣ You had me at biscuits. ⬇️
3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 6️⃣ This is from my Goodreads Review of The Mysteries of Udolfo:
‘I was so happy to hear The End…..
Apparently there weren't Editors in 1794 when this was published. It rambles on and on and on. I could only take so much of the Histrionics. I would bail for a while. Finally I can get this 31 h 15 m 42 s mess off my phone.‘ ⬇️

3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 7️⃣ I found the notes about the Rice Portrait of Jane Austen interesting. I've seen the image countless times, but didn't realize that it may be Jane Austen herself. 3mo

The Dratsie Dilemma: San Andreas Shifters | Gail Carriger, G. L. Carriger
post image
Pickpick

My early morning tea and read last few days.
Marvin the Merman has always been my favorite of the San Andreas Shifters ever since I first met him in Gail Carriger's short story Marine Biology. (It's free when you sign up for her newsletter The Chirrup.) He always sparkles . It was interesting to see a more serious side to him. Also learning more about merfolk. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig But that Epilogue is what I love most about this series. “You‘re the strangest merman I‘ve ever met.” Marvin patted his shoulder. “I know, honey. But just look,” he gestured widely at the massive barbecue. “We like adopting strays.”🧜🏼‍♂️
3mo
catsuit_mango I loved the new story and learning more about merpeople. Do you think we will get Kevin's story one day ? And who is the strange lady in the café, we did not get the full story on her.... 3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @catsuit_mango ya what was up with her? Also there keeps being mentions of the fact that Alec and Marvin aren't married. I forget which book it is but Marvin says he's waiting on Alec to ask him. Why haven't you asked Alec????? 3mo
catsuit_mango @Crinoline_Laphroaig the good news is that it leaves a lot of new stories open if Miss Gail wants to keep writing that series :) 3mo
