Pickpick

I put off reading this book for a long time because I figured it would be too sad. But #QueerBC made me pick it up & I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. Yes, there are heavy themes of death & grief, and the title doesn't lie. But overall the feeling of hope prevails. I loved the found family elements, and the way smaller interconnected stories were weaved throughout showing how our lives impact the world around us in ways we don't realize

peanutnine This was my November #doublespin @TheAromaofBooks #QueerBC @PuddleJumper I'll probably read the others in this series eventually #SeriesLove2025 4d

Just curious... what reading challenges are y'all doing next year,? I'm still working on the 50 states, 50 horror books (50 percent complete); the past couple of years I have been slightly intrigued by the 52 book club challenge and I've knocked off a few new favorites I might not have otherwise... but I'm thinking '26 will be challenge/prompt free.As a mood reader, it's just so hard to commit!

TEArificbooks I have always done too many challenges and the reading starts to feel like “required” reading and there is no time for mood reading. So this year and next year I am participating when I feel like it. I‘m definitely going to participate in #USPresidents as I cohost. Also love #naturalitsy #themedcozies #foodandlit 4d
vivastory @TEArificbooks As a mood reader, I definitely endorse mood reading 📚📚😀 4d
Ruthiella I will definitely do #TBRTarot and #Roll100 because both help me read either what I already own or books I keep meaning to read but never prioritize. I will also do #ChuncksterChallege2026 and #AllergictoChunksters, but only when a TBR book happens to meet the criteria. 4d
See All 26 Comments
Dilara On Litsy, I'll continue with #foodandlit. I'll also follow #naturalitsy but I'm more of a lurker than an active member. On LibraryThing, I do the Global Challenge (read 5 books from every country - that's more of a lifetime endeavour) and an informal Nobel Prize challenge. I do better with free-form challenges, where I can read the books of my choice in the order of my choice 😁 4d
julesG I'll do 52bookclub again next year. Also Buzzword's Reading and Cover challenges because they are very low key and still tricky sometimes. 4d
vivastory I always see #tbrtarot .... can you explain it to me? @ruthiella 4d
Hooked_on_books I‘m not doing any. I‘ll be following the TOB and reading those as well as the Women‘s Prize and NBA lists, but no challenges. Though I have some thoughts about trying to get some of my mass market paperbacks read, my own little challenge. I‘m a mood reader, too. 4d
Ruthiella @cbee “pulls” a card like, read “read a book with a red cover” or “read a book by a Japanese author” and the way I do #TBRtarot is I look for a book I own that meets the criteria. If I can‘t find a match, I don‘t stress, however. 4d
AkashaVampie My memory sucks... but if u haven't tried #BookishMonopoly yet, here's ur chance. Also make sure to cater to u and what u want/have. 4d
AkashaVampie Also would love to see ur board if u do 4d
AshleyHoss820 As a fellow mood-reader, I love the BookSpin challenge that @TheAromaofBooks does every year. I‘m still doing the 1,001 books. I also found, from some devious Litten, the Hardest Reading Challenge You‘ll Ever Do. Created by Qwordy on YouTube, it‘s a year-long challenge beginning on July 7th. It‘s so difficult, it‘s actually meant to not be completed, but instead to broaden your reading horizons. Happy reading in ‘26, no matter what you choose! (edited) 4d
Kitta I did #LGBTQIA25 which is a book bingo that has a challenge on StoryGraph and #queerbc which also has a StoryGraph challenge. There‘s #ohcanada for some Canadian reads and I‘m going to attempt the #192030 challenge. I‘m also attempting the #vivillon challenge in 2026 (reading books from different countries based on the Pokémon regions lol). 4d
Amiable @AshleyHoss820 I‘m intrigued—what makes it the hardest reading challenge ever? The number of books? The difficulty of the texts? A compressed timeframe? Inquiring minds need to know! 4d
CBee @vivastory that‘s my challenge 😊 I just pick a card (I had a deck but now make my own) and you read a book that fits the prompt. I posted this month‘s prompt Monday 👍🏻 4d
TheAromaofBooks I try to stick with challenges that are somewhat flexible or that I can use to reduce my TBR (which is comprised of books I WANT to read haha). So I've really enjoyed the #Roll100 challenge hosted by @PuddleJumper as well as #ReadorDonate by @julieclair who also hosts the #MonthlyNonfiction And @Librarybelle is getting ready to start a new five-year challenge #192030 as well!! 4d
merelybookish I am taking a break from any formal challenges but toying with trying to read mostly Canadian lit in 2026. I'm thinking of aiming for 80% so I still have room for moods or book club pics, etc. 4d
DGRachel I burned out on challenges. The only thing I will be doing next year is #bookspin and that‘s only because I like making the graphics at the beginning of each month. 🤣🤣 Well, that and it‘s so flexible it allows for space for mood reading and there‘s no pressure. 4d
RaeLovesToRead HRCYED, PopSugar, and let's see what Book Riot's Read Harder is like! Those are the main ones I think... as well as Bookspin, Roll100 etc on here 😊 4d
RaeLovesToRead I don't aim to finish though because I'm far too distractible 4d
MaleficentBookDragon I love the #Bookspin challenge by @TheAromaofBooks. I've been doing that one for years.

I also do two on #GoodReads.
The #DustyBookShelf by the Challenge Factory and #MountTBR. Here are this year's links to check out-
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group_folder/476813?group_id=55345 https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/1256310-mount-tbr-challenge-2025

I like all these because they are to work down my TBR & they are books I WANT to read.
4d
MaleficentBookDragon @DGRachel Me too! I have kept my Photoshop subscription just because I love making the graphics (yeah I'm a little weird). 4d
DGRachel @MaleficentBookDragon It‘s why I can‘t cancel my Canva subscription! 🤣🤣🤣 4d
AshleyHoss820 @Amiable I think what makes HRCYED so difficult is a combo of all the above! 😂 She has white prompts & purple prompts, one of which is set in stone, the other is more customizable. There are also SO MANY PROMPTS and many require multiple books to complete. For example: Disability Rep needs 5 (I think) different books representing 5 different disabilities. Check out Qwordy‘s YouTube, if you‘re curious! She does a wonderful job explaining it! ☺️ 3d
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I'll be doing Food & Lit, 192030, and I'll see what I can get done with the 52 Book Club & PopSugar. I'm trying to read more from what's already on my shelves, and since F&L tends to need library resources, I'll do what I can without forcing myself to choose a book that doesn't interest me. This thread has me intrigued by HRCYED though! 2d
vivastory @CBee I just saw your recent prompt. I 💙 Japanese mysteries 2d
vivastory @merelybookish Your Canadian lit challenge sounds fun! I'll definitely be keeping an eye out 2d

repost for @PuddleJumper

It's time to select #QueerBC authors for 2026. Thank you to everyone that suggested authors! It is a great list to pick from

I used a random picker to select 3 choices for each month. Vote for the one you most want to read. Vote here: https://forms.gle/MATW5nZ2JjospzYh8

Voting will close 21st December

I've also asked if people want authors announced monthly or as a lot at the beginning of the year. Both work for me

Jari-chan Voted. Wasn't familiar with a lot of the names, so I just chose randomly 😅🤣 6d

PuddleJumper @Jari-chan 🤣 That's one way to discover new authors! 5d
AllDebooks Done ✔️ Thank you xx 5d
willaful I like seeing your author post each month, but I'm happy to go with whatever most people want. 5d
rwmg There are some months where I have no basis to choose because I haven't heard of any of the authors. Could you tweak the poll so that we can abstain from voting for some months? 5d
Kenyazero Thanks for putting this together! I picked a bit randomly as well. I could have looked everyone up but just decided to go with it. 5d
PuddleJumper @AllDebooks ❤️❤️ Thank you 5d
PuddleJumper @willaful Yeah, both work for me so I'll do whatever gets the most votes 5d
PuddleJumper @rwmg I understand your position but I would prefer people vote for every month. This may mean just randomly selecting an author. 5d
PuddleJumper @Kenyazero I get that! It was a good mix of authors, some of them I hadn't heard of which was nice 5d
rwmg @PuddleJumper OK, will do 5d
lil1inblue So many new-to-me authors, which I love! Thanks so much for putting this together! 5d

No Title | None

Hey #QueerBC, here are some discussions questions for our November author, Adam Silvera. Answer some, all, or none!

rwmg He co-authored the book I read with Becky Albertalli, whose “Simon Vs The Homosapiens Agenda“ I loved. I didn't like this as much, but I don't know whether that was due to him or the co-authoring. I just felt the two MC were too similar so I got confused with the changes of POV as to whose head I was supposed to be in. I will try one of his solo efforts another time.

I occasionally read YA but not really regularly/frequently.

willaful @rwmg What If It's Us? I enjoyed that one. There were actually some parts of the book I read that made me think of BA so perhaps he was influenced by her before they teamed up. I also thought of We Were Liars.

Do you think you'll read the sequel? I'm afraid I found it too irritating to finish.
(edited) 1w
rwmg @willaful Whoops. I forgot you have to re-tag the book if you edit a comment.

I read the extract from the sequel which was in my ebook but I don't feel that enthused.

peanutnine I read quite a bit of YA, I usually enjoy it. For this month I read They Both Die at the End and liked it more than I expected. It's heavy on grief and death which I don't always gravitate to but it was really well done and left me with more hope than sadness overall. There was a romantic aspect which was sweet and I enjoyed it. I'll probably try out the other books in his Death Cast series 6d
willaful I read YA up to a point. Some of it is definitely Not Meant for Me. But certain authors I like.

My book was History is All You Left Me and it had *all* the themes, except being Latinx. So much grief! It was well done and excruciating. The plotline was very interesting, as we learn there's more to the story than meets the eye. It's very romantic, being primarily about loss of love and moving on.
6d
willaful Interestingly, there's a new edition of the book that has a bonus epilogue that gives it a much more upbeat ending. I would love to know the story about how he came to write that. Pressure from readers? Being at a better place in his life? The main character has OCD, which I believe Silvera has too, and perhaps he felt he needed to show that there's help.

Not sure if I'll read him again. None of the other stories really appeal. But I might.

Jari-chan 1. I enjoy reading YA every now and then. Reading the books I wanted to read when I was that age but didn't exist in the 00 years. I'm happy for the younger generation that they now have a wider and deeper representation than we had.

2. Grief and mental health. Both interlinked, of course. It was hard to read sometimes but an open and honest portrait of how depression feels, especially when you're a teen. Sometimes I was reminded how I felt ⬇
5d
Jari-chan that age, but there weren't really any books or characters I could turn too. See answer to Nr. 1

3. At first, it was a bit too much, but the more the story progress, the more complicated it got. It sure wasn't the typical first-teenage-lovestory I have expected. All in all the book definitely wasn't what I expected. In a very good way.

4. Not sure, this one got me really hard. If the others are like I do have to be in the right mindset.
5d
willaful @Jari-chan Which book was it? I feel the same way, most of his books seem pretty heavy. Though What If It's Us is more lighthearted and fun.

I hear you on representation! YA is so amazingly good and diverse now, especially compared to what I had when I was that age.
5d
Jari-chan @willaful I read More Happy Than Not. It's not as famous as his other books, I think, but I'm glad our library has a copy of it. 5d
willaful @Jari-chan That's the first book of his I read. I don't remember much about it except I really enjoyed the depiction of the street life in Washington Heights (I lived there when I was little.) 5d
Jari-chan @willaful I can't really compare, but I thought the descriptions of street life were very vivid. 5d

Even after he broke up with his boyfriend Theo, even when Theo started seeing Jackson, Griffin expected them to be endgame someday. But then Theo died at 18 and Griffin is left a wreck of grief, guilt, and compulsion. A very intense story with intriguing twists; it engrossed and affected me but was almost too depressing to enjoy.
