Station Eleven: A novel | Emily St. John Mandel
post image

Reading #StationEleven during lunch
This one has been on my TBR for years, but the hypes around it had stopped me from picking it up, now it's the hypes that made me curious about it all over again.
Honestly, I don't know if this is the best time or worst time to read this book... provided it's about lives before and after a pandemic, it really does strike a nerve there. Nonetheless, it's written beautifully & I'm hooked.

MrsMalaprop I am just starting this one too! And same same, wondering about the timing 🤔🦠😷 2y

The bright side of the planet moves toward darkness and the cities are falling asleep, each in its hour, and for me, now as then, it is too much. There is too much world. Czeslaw Milosz

This might be the quote before the first line, but I liked it better.

The Glass Hotel | Emily St. John Mandel
Pickpick

Another Mandel novel I didn't want to put down! It will likely haunt me for a while, but I loved it. The characters were unlikable, but extraordinarily believable. Mandel asks us, "Is it possible to both know and not know something?" Where is the line between being a good person who makes bad decisions, and simply being a bad person? Her characters tell us that it's quite easy to delude oneself.
P.S. Loved the callbacks to #StationEleven ?

I'm all in on the Emily St. John Mandel multiverse, the ESJMMU. Bring on the #StationEleven references!
Also: "The problems of [her] life were the same from one year to the next: she knew she was a reasonably intelligent person, but there's a difference between [that] and knowing what to do with your life, also...between knowing that a college degree might change your life and a willingness to...commit to the terrifying weight of student loans."

You guys, I really liked this one! It wasn‘t at all what I was expecting. I loved how it came together in the end, but I do wish she had given me a little more on The Prophet. Still, I loved the appreciation for the arts (theater, writing, fine arts, comics), and it felt grounded and realistic. Not otherworldly at all. I don‘t know why I waited so long to read it. Can‘t wait for The Glass House now. #emilystjohnmandel #stationeleven #theglasshosue

ElaineR Well this sounds rather timely! Hadn't heard of it but sounds interesting. 4y

Panpan

Arthur Leander, Hollywood actor, had a heart attack during a production of King Lear. A flu pandemic arrives and civilization as we know it comes to an end. Kirsten Raymonde and The Traveling Sympathy dedicate themselves to keeping the remnants of art and humanity alive. They encounter a violent prophet who will threaten the band‘s existence. Post apocalyptic book and not in my comfort zone and there didn't seem to be much point of the story.

readingjedi I didn't really feel this one either 🤷🏼‍♀️ 4y
kricheal Thank you for writing this review! I read this three(?) years ago and everyone was giving it RAVE reviews and I still don't understand what was so great about it. I'm glad I'm not the only one! 4y
EadieB @kricheal Your welcome! I listened to audio as it was marked as one of the best books of the year. Afterward, I said, “What the heck was that all about?” Different strokes for different folks, I guess! We don‘t all have to like it just because others said it was good! @readingjedi (edited) 4y

For a #postapocalyptic novel, the plot of #StationEleven felt fresh. It focused less on the horrors of the new world and more on the beauty, tenderness, and interconnectedness of #humanity. I often considered how I'd feel in similar circumstances (both before and after the Flu). I loved that it was largely set along #LakeMichigan and in an #airport! Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys this genre. #airplanes #pandemic #fiction #fame #survival

Justifying today's #bookhaul by pointing out that these are all generally short books and are therefore equivalent to having only purchased one, maybe two, long books. Fair, right? 📚📚😆😆 I think I will start with The Secret Life of Bees!
