The Secret Life of Bees
The Secret Life of Bees | Sue Monk Kidd
The multimillion-copybestselling first novel by the author of The Invention of Wings, coming from Viking in January 2014 The Secret Life of Bees was a New York Times bestseller for more than two and a half years, a Good Morning America Read This Book Club pick and was made into an award-winning film starring Dakota Fanning, Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson, and Alicia Keys. A coming of age tale set in South Carolina in 1964, The Secret Life of Bees will appeal to fans ofKathryn Stocketts The Helpand Beth Hoffmans Saving CeeCee Honeycutt, and tells the story of Lily Owens, whose life has been shaped around the blurred memory of the afternoon her mother was killed. When Lilys fierce-hearted black stand-in mother, Rosaleen, insults three of the towns most vicious racists, Lily decides they should both escape to Tiburon, South Carolinaa town that holds the secret to her mothers past. There they are taken in by an eccentric trio of black beekeeping sisters who introduce Lily to a mesmerizing world of bees, honey, and the Black Madonna who presides over their household. This is a remarkable story about divine female power and the transforming power of lovea story that women will continue to share and pass on to their daughters for years to come.

Coming of age story set in 1960s South Carolina. I really loved spending time with the characters in this one, it's the kind of book where you keep wondering what they're all up to when you're not reading the book.

Also apparently I've been living under a rock because I didn't realize there was a movie adaptation. Will have to check it out!

If you enjoy imagery too# it‘s fullest extent, this book is 100% for you. In the beginning of chapter, Kidd gives the reader a little foreshadowing insight to where the plot is going to thicken next. While you may be able to assume what is coming next, you wrapped in by the arms of her story telling and pulled in even closer.

After reading and absolutely loving The Book of Longings, I‘ve decided to delve into other books by Sue Monk Kidd. The tagged book is one I read long ago and loved. I‘m not usually one to reread books. Now I‘m buying and rereading books, and dreaming of completely filling my bookshelves. My current read is also one I read long ago and loved. I blame (and thank) Litsy for this new habit. 🤣🥰📚

Ruthiella I don‘t reread often but when I do, it‘s usually interesting since I change as a reader and sometimes notice different things the second time around. 11mo

I was looking for audiobooks similar to some of Fannie Flagg‘s books and this was recommended. I would highly recommend the #audiobook for this if you decide to read it. The narrator is fabulous and really transports you right into the story. Such an amazing group of women in an unusual setting. I didn‘t want it to end. I‘m gifting the book to my mom because I know she‘ll love it. Recommended if you enjoy Fannie Flagg and books like The Help. 5⭐️

JenlovesJT47 Anyone seen the movie? I‘m wondering if they do the book justice. 11mo

There was heavy foreshadowing at certain points which was unnecessary because I was already feeling this isn't going to end well. Apart from that, some interesting descriptions of beekeeping and an intriguing religious atmosphere. But still I finished it thinking 'so?'

I liked the story, I loved the writing and I really loved the narration. I would have sworn the narrator was a child herself, but I guess that's what makes them good actors/actresses. (Narration by Jenna Lamia.)

I personally hate reading books multiple times but after reading it, I would have to agree with her. It‘s an incredible book, very well-written and I very much enjoyed it. Highly suggest

Part Huckleberry Finn part To Kill a Mockingbird, but quite originally its own thing especially giving insight to the power of relations and women- sometimes a bit too sweet, but honey is like that sometimes too. It‘s also really good to read a book that deals with being social in a time of social distancing... you know bees...

Our road trips aren‘t complete without a visit to a local bookstore. Loved The Captain‘s Bookshelf in Asheville, NC. I found a copy of Velveteen Rabbit for the girls and a first edition of The Secret Life of Bees for myself (we‘re headed to South Carolina next and I love getting souvenir books set in the places we‘re visiting), plus a British copy of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. I was sad to discover they are closing soon.

This was a fairly gentle read - the main character experiences some trauma which gradually unfolds through the story, It's no 'The Color Purple' but it addresses important themes of race in 1960s America. The bee thing is an extended metaphor and there's a lot about motherhood and sisterhood. It just didn't thrill me - it felt much tamer than other books which are set in the same era. I did find the bee stuff interesting and a fun juxtaposition.

Happy New Year to everyone! What's your New Year resolution (book and non- alike)? I'm going into 2020, looking for self-acceptance and peace, but also filling my life with books. My 1st bookish goal is to read everything off of my physical TBR shelf (1st book up: pictured), and the 2nd is to fill my life with a read anytime I'm feeling down. Who can't be happy with a book?
