Deck the Hulls | Kat Cassidy

This was a fun tongue-in-cheek Christmas caper romance. Adam is under witness protection after leaving the mob. He's trying to lay low when he suddenly needs to dispose of a body & borrows a boat, accidentally kidnapping the captain in the process. A storm hits & the two men have to work together to get through the danger. This was silly and you can't help but feel for Adam as everything goes wrong when he's finally just trying to do right.

This was a reread for me, this time on audio. It was great to listen to a story in between other listens over the month. Still love these stories better than the original film Love Actually 😅

I won this short story anthology in a storygraph giveaway a while back & I'm glad I finally read it for my #doublespin pick of December. These were all queer retellings or stories inspired by Much Ado About Nothing, which was already my favorite Shakespeare play. Some were better than others of course but a few really stood out as unique and memorable. There are some art pieces scattered throughout as well. Definitely a worthwhile collection

HATED this book. Would‘ve been DNF #1 of 2025 if I hadn‘t been buddy-reading with @Lin3han . Four middle-aged white British men wander into the woods and awaken an old Swedish god, who defends her territory. I was rooting for everyone to die bc they were all terrible for their blatant misogyny, fatphobia, antisemitism, and homophobia.

For Christmas, Tolkien would write letters to his kids as Father Christmas & other characters. It is really cute, & you can even see early LOTR influences.
For this year's reread, I tried the audiobook, & it was incredible ❤️

Daisey I thought the audio was available from one of my libraries and planned to listen this time as well, but when I went to look it wasn‘t there. At some point, I do plan to try it out. 3w
JazzFeathers It is indeed so interesting to see Tolkien's major work filter into this story. A bit like it happened with The Hobbit. It's so sweet that he shared his creations with his children, in a way that they could receive. 3w

I usually like Kasie West's YA fare because she writes characters whose problems feel real/regular to me. There's drama, but it's not over the top. Like most of her books, we have a MC who needs to learn to get out of her comfort zone a little, find some balance in her life, and be willing to wrestle some of her inherent prejudices. There's also some great snark and fun characters. An enjoyable read, even if it didn't really bring anything new ⬇

I've enjoyed a few of Arnold's novels, so when I saw he had written a graphic novel, I thought I would check it out even though that isn't my usual wheelhouse. I liked but didn't love this one, involving zombie squirrels. There were a few side characters who just felt a little to bizarre for me. But there were some funny moments and the main characters were a likable crew.

My final holiday read of the year is the sequel to Christmas at the Shelter Inn. I liked this one better than Shelter Inn, mainly because I found this MC to be more likable haha It's cute and pretty traditional fare for the genre, but nothing mind-blowing. As usual, by the end of December I'm ready to set aside holiday romance and jump into some other stuff!!
