For Christmas, Tolkien would write letters to his kids as Father Christmas & other characters. It is really cute, & you can even see early LOTR influences.
For this year's reread, I tried the audiobook, & it was incredible ❤️

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! 3w
Daisey I thought the audio was available from one of my libraries and planned to listen this time as well, but when I went to look it wasn‘t there. At some point, I do plan to try it out. 3w
JazzFeathers It is indeed so interesting to see Tolkien's major work filter into this story. A bit like it happened with The Hobbit. It's so sweet that he shared his creations with his children, in a way that they could receive. 2w

I really loved reading these letters each day. It's amazing that Tolkien was able to keep it up for so many years for his children. I loved the fun adventures Father Christmas described with his trusty, chaotic North Polar Bear. The drawings were spectacular & magical. I can only imagine the excitement the kids would have each time they got to read a new letter and the story inside
Thanks @Daisey & @JazzFeathers for hosting this #TolkienChristmas

Daisey I‘m so glad you enjoyed it! They are magical! 3w
SpeculativeFemale I always felt like this collection gave a little glimpse into a different part of Tolkien's mind and heart than his novels. His love for his family just shines through the letters. 3w
BookmarkTavern Lovely! 💖 3w
JazzFeathers Glad you enjoyed the read 😁 I do find this reading magical. And somehoe it becomes even more so every time I read it. 2w

Thank you to @Daisey and @JazzFeathers for hosting #TolkienChristmas again this year! I looked forward to reading my Father Christmas letter each day, and Tolkien‘s drawings & the antics of North Polar Bear were such a joy! This year I bought the Centenary edition of the book instead of relying on a library copy, and I‘m so glad I did (pictured here with the closest I have to NPB). This may become an annual tradition for me! #FellowshipofTolkien

Daisey I‘m so glad to hear you enjoyed it this much! It‘s become an annual tradition for me as well, although I spend varying amounts of time with it from year to year. 3w
JazzFeathers That photo is absolutely fantastic. Thanks so much for sharing it. It warms my heart. And so happy that you enjoyed the readalong. It has indeed become a tradition for this little group of Tolkien enthusiasts 😁 2w

Merry Christmas friends! 🎄
I‘ve sent the beagle out to run & prepped breakfast enchiladas for brunch with family in a few hours. The tree is lit and music playing while I enjoy a few more pages of this book. I won‘t finish until I‘m back home this evening, but I love it as much as ever. I so appreciate how Tolkien weaves a fantastic story while also reminding readers to be aware of hard times for others.

Daisey @wordslinger42 So good to hear. Hoping to see at least a final post from you when you finish it again. 3w
JazzFeathers I'm late for Christmas, but l wish you a fantastic new year. I've just finished this book and, like you, loved it like always. Maybe even more so this time, l don't know why. 3w

I‘ve been reading the images of Tolkien‘s handwritten letters alongside the printed text, and several times have discovered that the printed text makes minor changes or omits parts of the original letters! In today‘s letter, there‘s a whole paragraph about Priscilla‘s “Bingos” that is missing from the printed text. So interesting to see the editorial decisions! #TolkienChristmas #FellowshipofTolkien

TheAromaofBooks I noticed this last year! It seemed odd to me to omit what felt like random paragraphs/sentences. 1mo
BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks All I can think is that the editors were trying to make the “story“ parts tighter by omitting the specifics about which gifts Father Christmas was bringing. I've noticed they also sometimes omit the references to things the children had written in their letters, which aren't included (I'd actually love to read those, though!) 1mo
Daisey I haven‘t analyzed these carefully, but I have wondered about editorial choices. Focusing on the story aspects does make sense. Thanks for sharing. 1mo
AvidReader25 I‘ve been reading these with my girls and they are so delightful! 1mo
JazzFeathers Oh, l didn't know that. I've tried to read only pieces of the original letters, and l never noticed the omissis. Thanks for sharing ☺️ 3w

Apologies to my fellow Tolkien readers. I‘m teaching new classes this year and we‘ve got one more week to wrap up the semester. I‘ve got little time for print reading until this week is over, and I haven‘t even kept up on this short daily read. I hope to catch up once school‘s out Friday, but don‘t expect any posts before then. I hope you‘re enjoying, and I would still love to see your posts this week.

CatLass007 Being a teacher is probably the second most important job I can think of. Being a parent is the most important. So you do not have to apologize! ❤️ What subject(s) do you teach? Is that a wiener dog? 1mo

Daisey @CatLass007 Thanks! I teach JH & HS math, and Luthien is a beagle. She was out running for a few hours yesterday and ready for a nap. 1mo
wordslinger42 I‘m enjoying the reread immensely, even though I haven‘t posted! It‘s such a comforting read 😊 1mo
JazzFeathers I totally understand, @Daisey It has been the same for me. I'll probably catch up after Christmas. 1mo
JazzFeathers @wordslinger42 That's so well-sais! It is indeed a comforting read ☺️ 1mo
mabell So cozy 🥰🥰 1mo
Daisey @wordslinger42 @JazzFeathers Yes, it really is a comfort read for me this time of year as well. If I don‘t catch up before, I‘ll probably finish it Christmas Eve. It will be a perfect time to curl up and read before the bustle of Christmas Day. 1mo

Read three years today and caught up on Letters from Father Christmas.

Both the story and the drawings are so lovely.
Every time l read them l imagine how magical it must have been for Tolkien's children to keep this correspondence with Father Christmas 🥰

My little one woke up sick today 😪 so staying home instead of running errands. Hoping she feels better by her birthday on Tuesday.
While I'm tending her, catching up on my #TolkienChristmas readalong, and other Christmas reads.
@Daisey

Daisey Sorry to hear the little one is sick, but I hope you‘re enjoying the readalong. 1mo

Catching up on Letters from Father Christmas this morning with breakfast and laughing about the “Rory Bory Aylis fireworks” and the North Polar Bear‘s antics!

Daisey @BethM @peanutnine Agreed! I never knew about Tolkien‘s artistic talents until I started reading more of his work on Litsy. It‘s so wonderful! 1mo
Daisey @JazzFeathers I don‘t know that I can love them any more than I already do, but I do find new things to appreciate every time. 1mo
tpixie This book of letters is so fun and beautiful 🤩 1mo
BarbaraJean I treated myself to the Centenary edition this year and am so glad I did! I loved the illustrations last year but they're even better in this larger edition. And I'm loving all the commentary that the North Polar Bear adds along the way!! 1mo

#FellowshipOfTolkien.#TolkienChristmas

Even in his children's stories Tolkien uses such poetic imagery.
