Cults—religious and not—function on the foundation of specific language. Montell explains how they draw members in and keep them hooked. She also points out how MANY types of entities use this language to achieve cult-like ends—businesses, fitness companies, indeed practically any brand wanting to be the next big thing.

BarbaraTheBibliophage Montell specifically talks about SoulCycle — then I saw THIS article today. (Apologies for the paywall.) https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/05/23/peoplehood-soulcycle-relation... 3y

This is the first book I picked in my self-directed writing course syllabus. A longtime blogger and writer, with one self-published book to my credit, I‘d like to “get serious” about my craft. King makes me want to keep writing, and also gave me the smack down on adverb use. I loved both his memoir section, and the writing advice. My copy is covered in notes!

BarbaraTheBibliophage Thanks @britt_brooke — it was as fabulous as you said it would be! 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘m trying out the Bookly app for my print book reading. I don‘t have the energy to track everything I read. But it‘s been fun. Pretty sure I have a coupon code, in case anyone‘s interested. 5y
britt_brooke So happy you liked it!! 5y

Crazeedi @BarbaraTheBibliophage I've thought about bookly, but you have to pay right? I csny 5y
Crazeedi @BarbaraTheBibliophage sorry about last word, I can't! 5y
TheLudicReader That‘s a great book on every level. 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Crazeedi The free version is pretty limited. They constantly offer you deals on the premium version. I just used the free one until the premium pricing they offered was a good enough deal. 5y

This is that unique day where, more than other days, we look back and also look forward. Wishing you a wonderful reading year in 2019. And may your statistics match more perfectly than mine do!

2018 was a great reading year for me. I read 11 #chunksters that were 500+ pages long. And completed six reading challenges!

I felt healthier, which meant less reading time. And I‘m okay with that!

alisiakae Yes! One of the few things I sacrifice reading time for is exercise and healthy activities. ☺️ 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft I do read on the elliptical, but this has been a swimming year for me. It‘s good to have time without screens—even just for 45 minutes a few days each week. 🏊🏻‍♀️ 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @AmyG @Redwritinghood Thank you! Happy New Year to you! 🎉🎉 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Gezemice Thanks—it makes a big difference! Wishing you a happy, healthy New Year also! 🎉🎉 6y
