#LitsySummerCamp Day 6: Mmm…Outdoor Cooking

When I was young, my favorite Girl Scout Camp & family camping meal were individual foil packets dinners. As this was decades ago they were called “Hobo Dinners” which now is a pretty offensive & politically incorrect name.😱Anyway, the top 3 are cookbooks we used back in the day & I have in my retro/vintage cookbook collection. The bottom 3 are some more current outdoor cooking & grilling books I own.

#Two4Tuesday I‘m a couple hours late but thank you @Eggs for the tag! 🤗

1️⃣ Yes! I especially love searching for old & retro cookbooks for my collection. One of my favorite finds is a first edition of the tagged book I got for >$10 at Powell‘s. I also love bargains & finding childhood favorites. 📚💚

2️⃣ Most often tea, iced or hot at home & coffee/espresso drinks at coffee shops. 🍵☕️

Anyone who hasn‘t played & wants to is tagged! 👋

TheSpineView Never to late! Thanks for playing! 😊 4y
LeahBergen I love old cookbooks, too! ❤️❤️ 4y

1. If there is a pile of books near me available, I‘ll be searching the stacks for anything interesting! 📚📚 I picked up the tagged last night from the grocery‘s bargain bin - 3/$10!

2. Either, depending on the time of day, and that may also be a glass of red wine, a beer or margarita 😂☕️🍵🍻📖

I can't believe this book was in the datebase!

I had breakfast this morning with a dear friend and her parents. My friend's mother is a fantastic cook and we spoke out our shared love of baking. She gifted me with the beautiful cookbook she found at a yard sale. Published in 1963, it has the author's life story woven between the recipes.

Went a bit retro in the kitchen today for #soupersundays with the "Pink Cucumber Float" (quirky & a bit of an unfortunate name-although it did catch my eye when flipping through the book) ?from the 1967 Betty Crocker's Hostess Cookbook. It's a cold & creamy tomato-cucumber soup that I changed up a bit to fit with my food preferences (dairy free, no canned soup base...).
Link to the recipe and my changes below. ??

LauraBeth @DebinHawaii I‘ve been making some of your recipes for the husband and he‘s lost 30 lbs since late May! 🙀 6y

#HeatOfJuly #fancy

You can't help but feel at least a bit fancy when you look through retro cookbooks--especially the ones focused on entertaining like this 1967 one. From the veggie garnish bouquets to a 'French Formality' dinner with Fruited Chicken en Creme & La Bombe Rose ice cream cake, to instructions for teas and receptions (remember that "The tea is one party that remains steeped in tradition.")?there's all the fancy you could ask for.

BarbaraBB Fantastic 😀😂 6y
leigha_land I love when people select cookbooks for these challenges!! 6y
mabell Oh my. How much #fancy-er can you get?! 😂 6y
Cinfhen Can you see Drake rapping over a tea party?? 🤣😂🤣🙌🏻 6y

#OldCoolBooks #princeps
My old cool books are short on princeps or first editions. With my old & vintage cookbooks, some possibly are, but have limited copyright information & some are first editions but not first printings. This Betty Crocker Hostess Cookbook is both a first edition, published in 1967 (the edition tagged in the database is 1976) & it's also a first printing. It's in really good condition too & was a steal from Powell's at $10.💙

LeahBergen I like the cool house on the cover, too! 7y
DebinHawaii @LeahBergen Me too! It has a cool 😎 retro vibe. 7y
