The Bad Beginning | Lemony Snicket
255 posts | 781 read | 3 reading | 99 to read
In the tradition of great storytellers from Dickens to Dahl comes an exquisitely dark comedy that is at once literary and irreverent, hilarious and deftly crafted. Never before has a tale of three likable, resilient, and unfortunate children in search of a home been quite so enchanting, or quite so uproariously unhappy. Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire are charming and clever children, but disaster dogs their heels. Tragically orphaned, they are forced to live with evil Count Olaf, maker of dastardly plans. Dauntless, they use their individual gifts (for invention, research, and well-timed biting) to thwart him.

Reread. My 9 year old often mentions this series, and we decided to give the first audiobook another listen.

I loved the movie and have watched a few episodes of the Netflix show. I listened to this on audio today. The adaptations follow the book pretty well. I got a little bored because it was familiar. But all in all it was a good listen.

10.30.19: Just finished rereading this terribly sad book. Wonder what unfortunate situation these poor orphans will find themselves in in Book 2. I‘m convinced there is a happy ending at the end of this series though!

#2 so far it has gone good. In this story it is about 3 kids, violet, klaus, and sunny baudelaires. And they lost there parents in a fire. So now they live with an evil man named count olaf. They even have to cook for him and his theater troop.

MissYaremcio Good review Hanna! Make sure you include all elements of the assignment in your next post (you were missing the recommendation and the pacing)! 3mo

This was a fun read! Especially on audiobook - you felt like you were at a play. I can‘t wait for book the second. Read my full review here: theupstairslibrary.blogspot.com Another book finished for #TeamSlaughter @Clwojick - not Halloween or team themed although there are a selection of creepy characters!

My 7 yo and I just started this series because he likes thinks that are a little scary. He loved it and is ready for book 2. The three Baudelaire orphans must work against the awful adults around them and foil the Count‘s evil plot. Found the part of the plot re marriage of the oldest Baudelaire super creepy and wasn‘t sure I bought the way it was solved but we will be continuing the series. #bbrc #readerschoice #middlegrade

Jerdencon The TV show with Neil Patrick Harris is really well done too. I found the books a bit repetitive but fun! 7mo
JazzFeathers I read the first three books years ago and really liked them. La year l listened to the first book read by Jim Carrey: absolutely brilliant! 7mo
LibrarianRyan I‘ve read the first 7. They get really repetitive but kids love them. And they are great vocabulary builders. 7mo

I appreciate this whole series, but will write on the first book. I really appreciate the vocabulary used (and defined) throughout the story. There is also repetition throughout the books like in a children‘s story. This keeps the readers interested throughout the whole series.

I enjoy this series but haven't ever been able to read all the way through it. Giving it a go in audio form since I tend to do better that way at this particular stage of my life.

My kids and I listened to Tim Curry‘s audio narration of this, which is fabulous. The story itself is engaging and funny and troubling at the same time. It definitely does not sugar coat things, but there is enough humor and intelligence and sarcasm to offset the series of unfortunate events.

elizabethlk I had no idea Tim Curry did a narration of this but that sounds amazing. 13mo

My #AdventRecommends day 8 book is a part of a children's series.
I started reading these when I was 18, because I remembered watching the movie as a kid, and liking it.
It reads the way a book meant for kids should, in my opinion.
The plot stops every now and then to explain some of the more difficult words.
What I liked the most were the Baudelaire orphans. They are really likable, and smart. This is a series that fans of Matilda would love.

This review is for the audiobook which my 2 boys aged 5 & 7 listened to.
They liked the story but said some of it was scary and sad.

Personally while I like some sound effects in audiobooks, I thought this one had too much. There was 1 scene in which the background noise of a baby crying went on and on for too long. It was sometimes hard to hear the narrator (Tim Curry!) because of sound effects. That said, ❤️ Tim Curry!

LibrarianRyan There are two versions of the full audio book series. The Tim curry series is amazing. The Lemony Snicket read version is not as fun. 2y
Soubhiville I love these audiobooks! My sis and I have listened to several on long road trips. I agree about the sound effects though, I prefer my audiobooks without them. 2y

I started to listen to audiobooks at work a couple of weeks ago. I listened almost all through #Sherlocked finishing on Friday. l'm doing a very boring, ripetitive job (preparing lists of contacts) l find that listening to a story actually helps me do the job. So l looked for something else... and stumbled on this.

I read the first 3 books in the series years ago and loved them, but let me tell you that Jim Carrey reading them is just priceless!

GondorGirl I'm listening to these audio books right now too! I'm on the sixth book. I like the Tim Curry narrations better then the author ones. 2y
JazzFeathers @GondorGirl l didn't know the author narrate his stories too, but l have a hard time immagining a better rendition than Carrey's. He acts rather than read 2y

I've been listening to the audio version of this series. I like that the books are short and good filler between listening to other things. I started reading the series years ago, but stopped after a few books, because of the controversy with Handler. I want to finish the books before watching the Netflix show though.

Jerdencon I'm actually enjoying the show better than the books (sacrilege I know! 😮) but I had found the books too repetitive for me. My son is now reading them as we watch the series - Neil Patrick Harris is so good in it! Although I did tell my son I'll read the last 4 books with him before the end of the series airs next year! 2y
KrystleTheBookSlayer @Jerdencon I'm actually enjoying the series a little more too. I think it was created to attract an older audience as well as a younger one. The books seem a bit childish in comparison. 2y
LibrarianRyan I hope your listening to the Tim Curry version. So much better than the Handler read version. 2y
See All 6 Comments
GondorGirl @LibrarianRyan I'm listening to both. Unfortunately my library doesn't have the whole Tim Curry version (which is SO much better). 2y
LibrarianRyan @GondorGirl that's a bummer. But at least you get to hear some Tim curry. 🤓 2y
GondorGirl @LibrarianRyan Luckily, it only looks like 3/13 of the books are the Handler ones. 😁 2y

I was surprised to see this is for 9+ as it‘s pretty dark for 9 year olds. I enjoyed this on audio and will seek out more from this series. I can see why this is a popular as although it is dark it is also funny at times. 3.5🌟

BiblioTori I read this when I was probably ten. I loved it! The thirteenth book is my favorite, but when I was little we went through some pretty miserable stuff with my parents and their health and so I almost related to the awful stories of the Baudelaires. Good series. 2y
