Music, magic, and a real-life miracle meld in this genre-defying masterpiece from Newbery Honoree Pam Muoz Ryan! Winner of a 2016 Newbery Honor, ECHO pushes the boundaries of genre, form, and storytelling innovation. Lost and alone in a forbidden forest, Otto meets three mysterious sisters and suddenly finds himself entwined in a puzzling quest involving a prophecy, a promise, and a harmonica. Decades later, Friedrich in Germany, Mike in Pennsylvania, and Ivy in California each, in turn, become interwoven when the very same harmonica lands in their lives. All the children face daunting challenges: rescuing a father, protecting a brother, holding a family together. And ultimately, pulled by the invisible thread of destiny, their suspenseful solo stories converge in an orchestral crescendo. Richly imagined and masterfully crafted, this impassioned, uplifting, and virtuosic tour de force will resound in your heart long after the last note has been struck.

A good choice for audiobook as music is integral.

The story of three children in different parts of the world during the years before and during World War II. Their stories are tied together by a harmonica and love of music.

A gentle story to introduce children to the realities of the rise of fascism and WWII, including the persecution of the Jews and minorities in Germany and internment of Japanese in the US.

Oh my goodness. This book was the historical fiction with a dash of fairy tale that I didn't know I was looking for. I highly recommend listening to it as music is an integral part of the story and the producers do a wonderful job incorporating it into the reading.

In the shadow of WWII, one boy lives in turbulent times in Germany, brothers at an orphanage who have been dealt a short hand in life and just trying to stay together, and a little girl who doesn‘t understand the segregation around her. All finding peace and safety in music. You can‘t help but feel a thread a hope and a sprinkle of magic.

I really enjoyed this book! The different storylines confused me at first and the way the lives interweave is a little unlikely, but I really appreciate the emotional depth Muñoz Ryan gives her characters and the role that music plays in the story. I am very glad I listened to this on audio as it enhanced the experience to hear the music.

This is my 3rd from #nywd22 and my favorite so far. Thanks for the recommendation, @sblbooks ! @monalyisha

✨I read 169 books last year, but 2022 is shaping up to be a different kind of year, so I'm keeping my reading goal at 100 books.
✨ Realignment. Lots of big changes on the horizon for my family in the next couple of years (plus a few we don't see coming, I'm sure), and I want to keep sight of my priorities.
✨Tagged is my third for #nywd22 and I am enjoying it a lot!

Starting this book with my students for the first time on Monday, and I couldn‘t find my personal copy, so stopped by the Half Priced Books by my school, and grabbed this copy. Opened the cover to see 4 other people‘s names, locations, and usernames from this app. An app I have never even heard of but loved how it went from TX to CA to Japan to GA. Tagged those of you who wrote. Pretty special. All dates were from 2017. 😂

Why did I wait so long before starting this book?! 5🌟 read. The book‘s theme is revealed by what three teens Friedrich, Mike, and Ivy truly have in common: not just a love of music, but resourcefulness in the face of change, and a refusal to accept injustice. Enchanting and magical! Highly recommend ❣️

I loved this so much! I listened to the audiobook, which included the music that plays an important part in the story. There are three main storylines (four including the fairy tale) and they‘re all compelling even though they all stop on a cliffhanger before being resolved in the last section. I‘m impressed by the way the author trusts young readers to understand and care about sad/difficult chapters in history. Loved it.

I'm still wrapping my head around this book. While the connection between the three stories was not difficult to figure out (this is billed as YA, after all), it didn't feel forced. This book was written so beautifully. I can see why both of my teenage girls recommended it so highly.

I don't give many 5⭐ reviews, but I've had three this month! On a roll!

I have a physical copy of this book (which is stunning) but I‘d heard such great things about the audio version that I had to try it. So worth it! In this story a magical harmonica travels between children around the time of WWII. The music they perform is woven throughout the recording. Different readers give each section a distinct feel. Great middle grade book for history and music buffs!

Another book in my quest to read young adults and and even Middle School books. This was three character, all who played a harmonica (same one) all stories merging together at the end.

The abrupt end of each character's story to move on to the next one was a little annoying.

Chopin, Bach, and Brahms played throughout the narrative. I can‘t imagine reading this and not having the music playing. This is a story about the love of humanity and music hopefully triumphing (I‘m only in Part 2) over the hate and poverty ridden era during WW2. #music#middle-grade

I listened to this audiobook and enjoyed it. It‘s an interesting way to teach the reader about WW2 with characters in Germany under the Hitler regime, and in the US as orphans and immigrants. Oh yes, and some magic! I was not expecting the musical references made frequently throughout the book and think that these were likely better in the audiobook as they played the songs being discussed. Teens may not have the perseverance required to finish.

A coworker recommended this audiobook to me, so I went in blind and WOW. This is definitely worth listening to, as music is integral to the story and the production does a great job at incorporating it. I was first afraid that I had stumbled into a depressing WWII book that would have too many parallels to what is happening in the US right now, but was completely charmed and am glad I kept with it.
