Stolen: A Memoir | Elizabeth Gilpin

Pickpick

It will forever feel weird to say I enjoyed a book about a human's bad experience. I do feel that reading about it, acknowledging it and learning from it, is the respectful thing to do. Elizabeth Gilpin had horrible experiences at Carlbrook School. She expressed herself in a way that was relatable. I hope that she continues to heal and sharing her experience with writing this book will help others.

Two thumbs up for this one. In 576 pages you will meet characters that will tug on your heart strings in so many different ways. Some you will hate, love, be confused by, constantly surprised by, worried for and rooting for. For such a big book I found it a quick, engaging read. Worth the time!

I was riveted to this book until I finished it. My inquiring mind HAD to know what happened before darkness fell tonight. Jeri's father was murdered. She obsessively has spent 20 years tracking the person she suspects is the killer. She's positive she knows who it is, but she can't prove it. The killer is that smart. Finally she takes a chance, convinces someone to listen.

Where to start??? Another BN book club book. Instantly had my mind set its going to be too scary, I'll hate it, I'm a chicken at heart. Started it at 1 pm and by 7:30 pm I looked up and I was 234 pages in. I INHALED it! Suspense, Gothic horror, a smidgen of romance. It meets almost all your literary senses. I recommend!

Graciouswarriorprincess I am reading it now! So gooodddd!!!! 2y

An enjoyable, quick read. Clay Edison is a Deputy Coroner. As if that in itself isn't hard enough to cope with, there is a raging wildfire and massive blackouts going on. Called to a murder scene amidst all this and while investigating the scene his world turns upside down. How far does he have to or want to go to turn it right side up again?

This was a BN monthly book club pick. Marie is a 17 year old in the year 1158 sent to a failing nunnery by Queen Eleanor. I can say there were parts I enjoyed. I gave it a so-so not because it wasn't a good book, it just wasn't "my jam". Sometimes hard to look back with the mindset of 2021 & reconcile my feelings with the societal construct of 1158. I will say it had a good ending! We had a great discussion about it.

Bob has his path in life figured out. . . .then he was drafted and sent to Germany. Luisa graduated from nursing school in Germany, got a job immediately and then life intervened in her life too and changed her course. Their paths crossed, paralleled and crossed again. The ending was not what I may have guessed or hoped but it was the perfect ending. It is a fictional novel based on Bob Inama's real life experiences.

The book takes place during The Depression. Elsa's start in life was hard and it never got any easier. Her family struggles every step of the way. Some may be put off by the underlying political message. I urge you to look deeper. Keep reading. It is not a feel good book but it is a book that will make you feel. In my opinion thats good literature, you are invested. It is worth the read and makes me thankful for my blessings.

A Stephanie Plum book is always a quick, fun read. Grandma Mazur is at it again. She is total goals on how I want to be when I am a senior citizen. As usual I cracked up laughing throughout the book. Anybody else have simultaneous crushes on Morelli and Ranger, just like Stephanie and I? 😍😉😊

Oh myyyyy. Rose is a young teacher recruited to work at a distinguished private boarding school. She accepts the job, but for no reason at all before she even arrives her intuition is telling her something is not right. Always keep in mind the adages, if it looks too good to be true it probably is AND absolute power corrupts absolutely. Be prepared, in the last quarter of the book your jaw will be dropping open often. Wow!

Bklover This looks really awesome, my friend! 3y

A good read! Dara and Marie eat, breath and sleep ballet their entire lives. The drama of that world is unexpected but intriguing. Good back history on the characters. You can formulate your theories and make predictions and toward the end when you are taking your celebratory sip of tea because you are that good at figuring things out, BAM, not. . .so. . .fast!

This entire book the story was based on supposition and a continual state of emotional angst for no useful purpose to the story. This didnt seem like a full story just flipping around, no expansion in depth except for one character. A constant "flipping the script" to the point it was just annoying. I read it because it was this month's Barnes and Noble book club pick. I just dont know why they picked it.

I simply cannot use any other word but "Extraordinary"! I was torn between should I buy it or shouldn't I? Having just finished it, I'm absolutely of the mindset "Oh my gosh what if I hadnt?" A masterful telling of the human experience during WWII from the Nazi side. . . .to start. As Herta, once a fully indoctrinated child learns as she grows up, always question, decide for yourself. The world is so much more than what we are told.

Sadie Blue, her family and community give you a glimpse into each of their lives living in Appalachia. Each one contributes to the story in a unique way. Life is hard in unfathomable ways but they keep up the fight every single day, as individuals and as a community. Amazing what you can do when survival is each day's priority. A good read!

The Paper Palace: A Novel | Miranda Cowley Heller
Mehso-so

I enjoyed the author's writing style very much but after a couple hundred pages she veered into a very dark area and was very explicit, then hopped back and forth in time with no explanation of why she was doing that. There were unnecessary details that muddied the storyline, stalling it instead of advancing it and a large unexplained time gap. This is not a book that you will have closure on. I'd try another book of her though, fingers crossed.

I really dont want to pan it but I found the story lacked depth. I found Lana to be rather whiny, childish, not too bright and in no way capable of pulling off what her character was supposed to be doing. The story was choppy and really had no continuity. I had many "oh we are doing/feeling this now?? That makes no sense!!" moments. It just skipped around without transition. It was an easy read but I didnt feel a good one.

I read 300 pages of the book and was liking it. At a certain point I was getting overwhelmed with the continual hurting of animals and had to stop reading. Now, I have to say nothing was unrealistic for that time period I personally just cannot bear too much of animals hurting and dying. I wish she had expanded the overall human story and less gruesome animals dying details over and over and over.

There were times that I felt the story needed to move along a little faster but I did enjoy this book. My favorite part was the end of the book. Not because it was ending but because the lingering questions throughout the story were answered, each and every one, in great detail. There were numerous times I would see a line and think wow I can relate to that feeling or it gave me a new perspective on something happening in my own life.

I read this book from Amazon's free prime list. I must say I enjoyed it. It was an easy read, one that you don't have to think about in depth or unravel every detail, no lessons to be learned or emotions to be examined. Sometimes you just want simple, easy reading, I found that in this book.

This book left me feeling, well, I'm not sure how I feel about it. I enjoyed it sometimes and at other times felt like I was slogging through it to get done. In my opinion it got repetitive about situations and a bit overly dependent on descriptive wording. I had several "I knew it" moments.

I really like Janet Evanovich's writing. I've read others in this series and enjoyed them. This particular one I found it dragged from time to time. Seemingly a bit too mired in details. However, the last quarter of the book picked up and grabbed my attention. I finished with a smile on my face.

I read this book because I became acquainted with the author through my book club. I enjoyed her style of writing so much I read several of her others. I was caught up immediately in this book and devoured it in a little over 24 hours. It took me through so many emotions. A very hard topic to read about as it makes you emotionally tackle events that go against your whole belief system but MUST be acknowledged and read.

This is my first ever post on "the Litsy" so I'm kind of nervous. I truly enjoyed this book. It sounds weird to say I enjoyed it considering the topic but I feel the victims need to be heard, remembered, respected and honored for what they endured. I feel that the author approached, researched and told her narrative wonderfully.
