⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ One of the best historical books I‘ve read this year!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ One of the best historical books I‘ve read this year!
This engrossing historical novel jumps between the 1950s, when Ruth learns that her estranged twin sister Iris may be in trouble, and Rome in 1940, when Iris first meets her future husband, diplomat Sasha Digby. Vivid characters and a dash of romance make this tale of spycraft and sisterhood a memorable and fast-paced read.
The beginning was good, the end was good. The middle was less than spectacular, but mainly because spy stories are not my thing. I kept going because I love Williams' writing and her characters.
While the grand baby naps and spring is showing her face I'm going get some reading al fresco in 😎☀️
It arrived!! Thank you so much for the book and all the goodies! Is the boot for birds? @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks #litsylove

A soft pick for me. Fascinating HF account of 2 sisters, one of whom is trapped in Moscow with a husband who may or may not be a Communist posing as American, and their 4 little ones. In Post WW2 1950s, USSR was stridently fascist-full of spying and intrigue and citizens eager to defect.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I read this for my in-person #bookclub comprised of some pretty amazing moms in my county. We‘ve been meeting up monthly for almost a year and it‘s a true pleasure. This was my first Cold War book, so that was super interesting, but it dragged in places and struggled to hold my attention. I found myself not really caring about the characters.
For #travelthroughbooks and #bookspin I selected this one. Truly, you can‘t go wrong with this author. She does her research and creates such vivid characters! Great book to take with you on vacation! @TheAromaofBooks
After a weekend full of intense gardening, it was fantastic to have today to just float and read ❤️ this was an amazing story of Cold War espionage and I appreciated understanding the references to the famine USSR created in the 30‘s because of Red Famine which I just finished
Another day of gardening like a boss, a swim and voting in the advanced poles = well earned reading time with treats ( chips and dip 🏆) and pizza ordered for dinner
My #bookspin #doublespin book list! Y‘all this will be the list that clears off my final bookcase shelf of TBR titles! @TheAromaofBooks
Oh my goodness, thank you SO MUCH @AWahle for the beautiful card, postcard, bookmark, the aaaaamazing recipes and the book!!! I‘ve been painting all day yesterday and this morning, so this was such a treat to unwrap 😊 I can‘t pick which recipe I‘ll try first, they all had my mouth watering 🤤 Thanks again @BennettBookworm for organizing this fun swap!! Happy Cooking and Happy Reading to everyone who participated 🥄🍴👩🍳
This is a Cold War thriller inspired by The Cambridge Five, a spy ring that passed secrets to the Soviet Union. Ruth & Iris are twins but couldn‘t be more different. When Ruth suddenly gets a post card from Iris after 12 years of silence, she knows she needs to go to the aid of her sister no matter where that takes her. Even Russia.
I don‘t remember the last time I read a Cold War novel. I liked the depth and growth of the characters. Expect Sasha. He I pretty much hated all the way through.
@teebe Thank you so much for spoiling me with all these gifts!!! I squealed with joy! The books are exactly what I‘d hoped for! The cross stitch patterns are perfection and will spark joy for months to come! Love love love it all! #stockingswap #poutinepenpals
Audible deal of the day. It looks so good I‘m going to get it.
This spy ring during WWII is mirrored after real accounts. Twins Iris and Ruth are as different as can be, and haven't seen in each other in 12 years since Iris and her Russian husband defected. A postcard to Ruth asking her to come and help with yet another difficult pregnancy leaves her mystified. A strategic operation ensues to reunite the sisters and timing is of the essence. Unexpected events erupt in this espionage case🧐
3.5⭐️
Good Cold War spy novel. Interesting characters and intriguing plot. A little romance, two estranged sisters who find their way back to each other, with some maternal heart string tugs thrown in. I wish I‘d read the author‘s note first. The ties to a true story would have kept it moving forward for me. The writing style dragged for me though. Too many unnecessary and overly detailed descriptions. Needs a good strong editor.
In a bit of a reading slump. We are in the middle of this one but it feels like it‘s dragging. I like the characters and am curious about what‘s next but not “gotta listen to the book!” curious, which is stalling me out on everything. Hopefully it picks up.
American diplomats spying for the Soviets defect and then have to be extracted from Moscow. A historical family saga, not a thriller. Fans of the author will recognize some side characters from her other books. I won this book in a giveaway on Goodreads.
I enjoyed this. I really like how the story unfolded, going back and forth between the main characters, in Rome in 1940, England in 1948, and NY and Moscow in 1952. It‘s a story about espionage, family loyalty, the destruction of secrets, and love. It was an interesting and entertaining page turner, well-written, with interesting characters and really good dialogue. It‘s going on my re-read shelf. 4/5
We made it to the weekend 👏👏👏
The afterglow of my enjoyment of this book lasted quite a while. I pick books totally at random at Barnes and Noble. Major score with this one! Twin sisters take 2 different paths in life. The authors approach to each of them and her wit kept me riveted. I devoured this book and will look for more by Beatriz Williams.
