#Rereadtheclassics

Discussion thread

Apologies for the lateness, I was distracted irl.
So, did you enjoy Dracula? I'm interested to know your thoughts.

🧛‍♂️ Did you like the epistolary format?
🧛‍♂️ Do you think it added to the suspense and tension?
🧛‍♂️ What do you consider to be the main message of the book?
🧛‍♂️ Do you think there is a subtext or deeper meaning?
🧛‍♂️ Why was the book banned?

TheBookHippie Reread for me - but I loved it once again, this format works for me. I think below the surface there‘s a ton of good things to discuss. It‘s banned because of the blood, violence and sexuality. The times were Victorian and the “we don‘t talk about how we live”, kinda like now! Perceived liberation too risky to allude to. 😵‍💫😂🙃🖤 5mo
Cuilin Ok in all honesty, I forgot to read this. I had a copy, I was ready, excited even and somehow life just got in the way. 😞 5mo
See All 18 Comments
AllDebooks @Cuilin pesky real life has a way of doing that sometimes. Don't worry 😊 5mo
AllDebooks @TheBookHippie it's one of my all-time favourites, as well as a good yarn there is so much to unpack. I'll give others a chance to comment before blathering on!! 5mo
BookwormAHN The abridged version I listened to this year stunk but generally I love this book. I think the way its written gives it a sort of mystery and since other than Van Helsing and maybe Lucy, the characters are all very Victorian and proper so I always wonder what they would really like to be doing or saying. Especially Jonathan, he's always so in control of himself. 5mo
dabbe I've read DRACULA quite a few times. This was my 1st with the Daily Dose through email (and it's still going!). I found the long lengths between the letters to be difficult. When I get into a book, I wanna keep going. I can appreciate it, though, because I got to feel (for example) exactly how Mina felt, waiting FOREVER for a note from Jonathan. I never tire of this classic, no matter how I read it. I just bought the annotated version, too! 💜🖤🧡 5mo
CrowCAH Super atmospheric! Love how this is the original text for all other vampire books to be inspired off of! 🧛‍♂️ 5mo
Bluebird Loved this book! I‘m kicking myself I took so long to finally read it. I read via the multicast audio version which was ideal for the epistolary format. I thought this style definitely added to the tension. 5mo
AllDebooks @BookwormAHN I think that the morality of the time period it was written in and battle between good vs evil is what makes it such a compelling story. There are so many contrasts such as gender and equality, science vs superstition, feminine passivity and masculine dominance and reversal as vampiric changes change the women to more aggressive, sexualised creatures. 5mo
AllDebooks @dabbe I admire your persistence. I race through this everytime I read it and still fell the tension. I could not read this at a slow pace. I appreciate your comment on empathasising with Mina. 5mo
AllDebooks @CrowCAH It never ceases to amaze me how atmospheric this book is. The descriptions of Jonathon's time in Dracula's castle are so eerie and creepy. Incredible story. 5mo
AllDebooks @Bluebird This was the first example of epistolary format I ever read and it got me completely hooked on it. Glad you joined us and enjoyed the book. 5mo
Saknicole I definitely love the epistolary format. It‘s funny because I don‘t love it in modern works but I am all about the Victorian Gothic style using it. Make me think I need to up my journaling and letter game 😂 5mo
Saknicole Also here is a hilarious gift of modern day Dracula inspired comedy song writing. https://youtu.be/CUKmd50_niI?si=g8-FMHTpLdfC2Xy- 5mo
AllDebooks @Saknicole 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 5mo
Tineke Hi, can you add me to your taglist? I really want to read the next book with you all. 5mo

I‘ve read Dracula many times but this was my first time listening to it. A really fun experience! But I got really fed up with Van Helsing, which I never experienced with prior reads. Tim Curry is brilliant narrating his parts but dang is Van Helsing long-winded and quite the know-it-all! 😂 I can‘t help but wonder why the other characters don‘t call him out for being so condescending! Anyway, loved it. #scarathlon #batbrigade @Catsandbooks

Dracula jigsaw completed a couple of days ago - it was a good one ?

I bought Terry Riley's album "A Rainbow in Curved Air" and, serendipitously, on logging it on my Library Thing catalogue, saw a recommendation for Philip Glass's 1999 soundtrack for the 1931 Bela Lugosi/Tod Browning film, performed by Kronos Quartet, and found myself back on t'internet ordering it!?

Bookwomble I've not listened to it yet - reviews are mixed, so have to wait and see. All of this vampiric action seems to be pointing to an autumnal rereading of the novel 😒🧛‍♀️

Bookwomble I've listened to it and it's fang-tastic! (Sorry 😔) Exactly what I'd expected a Philip Glass / Kronos Quartet soundtrack for a Dracula film to sound like 😁🦇 2y
jlhammar Very cool puzzle. I might be needing to get that Philip Glass Dracula soundtrack for myself. I listened to a bit online. I had no idea that he wrote a new score for that in the late 90s! I am generally a fan of minimalist and postminimalist music. Max Richter is one of my favorite contemporary composers. Thanks for sharing! 2y

bibliothecarivs It is quite long! A few years ago I decided to use my profile as my personal website and sketch a portrait of myself for family and friends to get to know me better. My wife feels that I'm spiritual in a secular way but to me the word spirit is too close to the supernatural.
