Thursday Next: First Among Sequels
Thursday Next: First Among Sequels | Jasper Fforde
The fifth installment in Jasper Fforde s "New York Times "bestselling series follows literary detective Thursday Next on another adventure in her alternate reality of literature-obsessed England Jasper Fforde has thrilled readers everywhere with his gloriously outlandish novels in the Thursday Next and Nursery Crime series. And with another genre-bending blend of crime fiction, fantasy, and top-drawer literary entertainmentis "Thursday Next: First Among Sequels," Fforde s famous literary detective is once again ready to make the world safe for fiction. Thursday Next is grappling with a host of problems in BookWorld: a recalcitrant new apprentice, the death of Sherlock Holmes, and the inexplicable departure of comedy from the once- hilarious Thomas Hardy novels, to name just a few all while captaining the ship "Moral Dilemma" and facing down her most vicious enemy yet: herself. Thursday s zany investigations continue with "Our Thursdays is Missing." Look for the five other bestselling Thursday Next novels, including Jasper Fforde s latest bestseller, "The Woman Who Died A Lot." Visit jasperfforde.com for a ffull window into the Ffordian world! My books are only vaguely organized (travel, science fiction, all time favorite keepers, non-fiction), pretty books for the best shelves, etc.

Everywhere: on shelves, in piles, on nightstands and end tables.

Hardcover books if possible, trade paperbacks where available, ebooks when I can't wait.

I love this series because you always get good puns and literary references. I don't think these would be even half as funny as audiobooks because of all the textual puns and in this one a bit of graphics. I think the thing I most admire about this series though is that so much interconnects with earlier books like there are some bits that have been tiny crumbs in the first books and then land all the way here in book 5

Managed to finish two and half books this week. I enjoyed everything I read even if it means I'm getting close to the end of Alex Verus and a verrrry slow burn romance in TBOAPW.

#WeeklyForecast
I should finish the tagged today once I sit down to read. After that I'll move on to Eon and whatever is picked from the bookspin draw. I'm so excited for the draw this month.

I decided that the next series I‘d tackle would be Thursday Next. I finished the first arc a couple years ago thankfully this one starts fourteen years after the events of that arc so the gap between reading isn‘t a big deal and sort of appropriate.

Good morning lovely Littens! Who else woke up to snow this morning?

Today's #IsolationInteractions discussion question: is there a book sequel that you wish existed?

I recently heard Marlon James talking about wanting a sequel to Jane Eyre, one where Rochester drives Jane to madness (inspired by Wide Sargasso Sea), and I would totally be on board to read that!

CBee I would love a sequel to 4y
Cinfhen Ohhh, good question!!! I need to think 🤔 4y
See All 19 Comments
Laughterhp I‘m gonna go with the tagged. Because I thought the other books were sequels and bought all 3 books. I was so disappointed when the 2nd book followed a different set of characters 🤦‍♀️ (I still haven‘t read the next book) 4y
DieAReader I‘d like there to be a follow up. I‘d like to know how Susannah is doing now. I do have her 2nd book The Great Pretender & I‘m looking forward to it too! 4y
Cupcake12 I love the Twilight Saga series and would love to find out what would happen after Breaking Dawn! 4y
zezeki That's a great question. I think I'd also like another Twilight sequel, but from Jacob's perspective. I loved his narration in Breaking Dawn. @Cupcake12 4y
CarolynM I want a sequel that is all about Black Superman (that's the only name used for him) from my favourite book of last year 4y
cleoh I‘d love a sequel to The Martian! 4y
ElizaMarie @cleoh YES!!! I would love this! When I saw this prompt it took me a bit to figure out what books I have read that do not already have a sequel or part of a series... But this one! It was golden and I would love to read more of him! He was such a great character! 4y
mrp27 Definitely Gone With the Wind. I would love to see what Scarlett does next. 4y
julesG The problem with a really good book is that the story's been told, no unanswered questions, an ending that doesn't leave me wanting to know more about the story/characters/... A sequel might ruin this. 4y
cleoh @ElizaMarie such a great character! Although I‘d want him to stay on Earth and be SAFE. So maybe he‘s a professor and training people how to survive 4y
GHABI4ROSES I wanted more of Wuthering Heights! Or at least more of Bronte! 4y
TheKidUpstairs @Laughterhp I would love another book with the same crew from Small, Angry Planet! I will say, the second book is worth reading once you get over the fact that it's not a true sequel. I was disappointed at first, but ended up quite enjoying it. 4y
Laughterhp I will definitely read it at some point. I read the 3rd one and really liked it too. I‘m just waiting until I‘m in the right mindset to read the 2nd! 4y
ElizaMarie @cleoh ooo yes! It would be interesting to see his approach to teaching. Also like he could help with some sort of disaster too.. Like be an expert to help or something. 4y
cleoh @ElizaMarie oooh that‘d be cool too! Maybe there‘s another disaster on Mars and he needs to coach them through it 😱 4y

What an amazing series! I still love it as much this second time through. Have you ever considered a Stupidity Deficit, or the method for reversing it? What if the second law of thermodynamics could be altered, and what if all of the future weighed upon that alteration? Thursday Next tackles these issues and so much more. What's amazing is how much fun it is to experience all of this right along with her.

I‘m not quite as enthusiastic about this book as the first three in the series, but it‘s still entertaining. You have to suspend belief reading any of these, because there‘s a combination of alternate history and alternate reality. I came close to bailing, but put it down, came back to it, and enjoyed it again, so maybe I wasn‘t in the mood when I started. The picture is because we went through Swindon on the train—but not this train😄

Blueberry I bailed on # 3. I like his nursery crimes series better. 6y

I had started this in August, before we went to England. I‘m not sure why I didn‘t take it along. Then, after we got home, other books kept jumping ahead of a return to this one. When I picked it back up yesterday, I thought I might need to start over, but I was able to get right back into the story. Maybe I needed the time away, because I‘m enjoying it more now.

The Thursday Next series (which I highly recommend!) is a humorous, time-traveling, adventure- mystery-fantasy detailing the exploits of Thursday Next as she works as a Literary Detective, interacting with the inhabitants of her own world as well as those of the literary worlds she protects. Lovers of both witty mysteries and classic novels (specifically fans of Dickens, Bronte, and Shakespeare especially) should definitely check this series out!

I *love* the Thursday Next series but I don't like the original US covers and this might be my least favorite -- but, I also have a soft spot for it because I got this one signed by Fforde! In 8th grade, my awesome teacher who introduced me to this series took me to Boston hear him speak about these books. So the not-so-great cover is balanced by the memories.

Shown here with the other versions of the series covers that I do really like!
