This was a Christmas gift from my mom. It‘s a lovely book, with beautiful artwork and hand-lettered quotes of women in fiction. It does not take long to get through. This is inspired by more-classic literature, which may be why it only has two POC represented (Pecola from The Bluest Eye, and Lady Kiri Tsubo from The Tale of Genji). Published in 2013.

My mom gave me these two books for Christmas ❤️😍 !

Due to a storm with strong winds, we had no power from 11pm Christmas Eve to 6pm Christmas Day. Not fun, but at least all our three kids were here.

EadieB @DivineDiana I keep track of the characters as I read a book and make notes that help me write my reviews. I find it a very handy tool. @OriginalCyn620 Great for keeping you organized! Everyone has a different way for keeping track of their reading. Goodreads is a great place to do that too. 5y

So Litsy is full of well read folks, so what do you think of this suggested requirement to be considered 'well read'?

Going by this list, I'm very poorly read. I would suggest the list is severely lacking rather than my reading. Or that there shouldn't be any requirement to be considered well read, other than reading widely and diversely. Soubhiville I‘m with you both @TrishB @Oryx , I think diversity is key. The old stuff isn‘t entirely relevant anymore. I‘d update the list with current social concerns instead of all the old philosophy. 6y

Lcsmcat I don‘t think it‘s elitist to say that, in order to understand current writers to the fullest you need to have read what they have read. And I would argue that the”old philosophy” often does a very good job of addressing current social concerns. Human problems are remarkably consistent over the centuries. Read newer, diverse literature, definitely! But don‘t denigrate something as irrelevant because it‘s older. There‘s a reason Classic survived. 6y

Oryx @Lcsmcat I'm not saying that these shouldn't be read, by any means, or that they are irrelevant, but I think you can be well read without this list being the backbone of your reading. I could be wrong, but I think it's hard to get exposure to a lot of these books without studying English or the Classics or Philosophy. That's my experience anyway. 6y

Lcsmcat @Oryx If you‘re the kind of person who wants to be well read, and thus reads articles like the tagged one, then you‘ve heard of these authors. If you have a library card or access to the internet you can read any of them for free. As far as needing help to understand them in context, yes a class is helpful, I agree. But that‘s not the only way. What would you propose as a backbone of one‘s reading instead? 👇🏻 6y

Lcsmcat I find it useful to have a common frame of cultural reference. Thus I read books mentioned by authors I read, which necessarily takes me backwards in time. How do you choose? 6y

quietlycuriouskate It turns out I've read most of those listed. I suppose that makes me well-read, then. *Widely* read, however, is a different matter (though Litsy is certainly helping to remedy that!). 6y

Oryx @Lcsmcat I agree there is access to these books easily now, but growing up I didn't get the exposure to a lot of these, particularly the Greek/Roman/philosophy/translation ones, with a tiny village library and not very good bookshop. Not through my school either. So I read what I could find. I'm only suggesting that there is more than one way to be well read. I don't think I ever wanted to be 'well read', I just want to read. 😉 6y

EllanaRose @Lcsmcat - I'm doing my masters degree in classical studies. Even if I read everything that survived from the era, I'm still only reading the works of the elite men for the most part. There are exceptions like Sappho, but diversity is necessary to get more viewpoints. At least in my opinion 6y

Lcsmcat @EllanaRose I agree. I‘m not arguing against diversity at all. Nor do I believe anyone expects one to read “everything that survived” from any given period. I‘m simply arguing for the value of reading the classics along with , not instead of. 6y

Lcsmcat @Oryx True, it‘s easier now than when we were kids. But there‘s not a cut-off date for learning. There are way more books I want to read than I will ever finish in my lifetime. But I‘m going to keep trying to read the best that every era has to offer. And I honestly want to know what your reading backbone (to use your term) is. How do you choose? 6y

Oryx @Lcsmcat totally agree, and I hope I can keep reading and learning as long as possible. I choose through recommendations, articles, and from following the trail of authors like you do. I read what sounds interesting to me. Although I've read and loved Homer, some of the other classics feel like they'll take a little more concentration than I can muster after work, so I might have to wait until I retire or win the lottery to dedicate the time. 6y

EllanaRose @Lcsmcat - My aim is to read all the Loeb Classical Library XD it's a far off dream but I'm trying. Some of it is a chore to read (looking at you, Appian, with your long History) and honesty not worth it XD 6y

Itchyfeetreader I find this list disheartening and the whole tone kind of odd and patriarchal. For me a discussion on being well read is about affordable access to a wide range of writers (fiction and non fiction) and availability of resources to help inform understanding. When it come to the classics I think the latter is especially key to help with interpretation and context. 6y

Lcsmcat @eilanarose A worthy goal! I have The Harvard Classics on my Kindle and in “hard copy” and I‘m working my way through them slowly, mixed in amongst all my reading goals. 6y

#RiotGrams Day 4: Notebooks/Journals. I've been bullet journaling for more than a year now and find it really works for me. A couple journals back I stuck a great sticker on one, and now doing so is my favourite part about starting a new journal. Sticker via one of @Liberty 's special printings.

I finally have a bookshelf! At least a proper one. I'm so happy and I can't wait to fill this up with so many lovely books. ♥️📚✨
For now, I'm storing all the books I've read and own (on the middle shelf there). #bookshelf #shelfie #bookcollection

Any tips on how to decorate the bookshelf? The brown doesn't really go with my room, but I'm curious to hear any other alternatives to painting it.

EvieBee It looks lovely! Especially those theocratic books in the corner. I like the brown, very classic. I like to add pops of color with stuffed animals that are small but literary. I have my eye on a Pusheen plush that's dressed as Sherlock Holmes! (edited) 7y

This is one of the most beautiful books. I haven't been able to stop looking at it! It displays one artist's interpretation of how a number of book heroines look (the portrait here is Anna Karenina).
