Relish
Relish: My Life in the Kitchen | Lucy Knisley
A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERLucy Knisley loves food. The daughter of a chef and a gourmet, this talented young cartoonist comes by her obsession honestly. In her forthright, thoughtful, and funny memoir, Lucy traces key episodes in her life thus far, framed by what she was eating at the time and lessons learned about food, cooking, and life. Each chapter is bookended with an illustrated recipemany of them treasured family dishes, and a few of them Lucy's original inventions. A welcome read for anyone who ever felt more passion for a sandwich than is strictly speaking proper, Relish is a graphic novel for our time: it invites the reader to celebrate food as a connection to our bodies and a connection to the earth, rather than an enemy, a compulsion, or a consumer product.A Publishers Weekly Best Children's Book of 2013An NPR Best Book of 2013

I skimmed the summary of this book and it didn't really seem like my kinda thing, but I read it anyway cuz someone recommended it to me. Can't say I enjoyed it, but that's on me. The book delivered exactly what it promised to deliver. Food memoirs just aren't for me.

Silver lining: I discovered there's a movie called “Relish“, so this counts as my #PopSugarReadingChallenge: “a book with the same title as a movie or TV show but is unrelated to it“

I‘m not a big foodie, actually a pretty basic, picky eater, but I‘ve loved everything else by Lucy Knisley so why not?

#unpopularopinion I‘ll be brutally honest. There‘s nothing wrong with this graphic foodie memoir, but it‘s just not for me. I rarely enjoy memoirs from anyone in any format, and I can barely cook even a basic meal, so a foodie memoir is so far outside my zone, it‘s practically in another universe. If you like to cook, or enjoy memoirs, then you‘ll probably love this. I‘m going to relish #bailey snuggles.

britt_brooke I love memoirs, and even though I hate to cook, I love food ones. It makes no sense. Might give this a try. 3mo
ValerieAndBooks I‘m curious!! I‘ll see first whether the library has it, though. 3mo

A foodie memoir in graphic novel form — what‘s not to like? I‘m very hungry now. Off to make myself some Cajun pasta. 😋

Recommended for those who enjoy memoirs/graphic novels/cooking and gourmet food. 5⭐️

The story details the author's life as a child of two foodie parents. She grew up eating more gourmet food as a child than I have eaten my whole life. She also got to travel the world, experiencing new countries and tasting the cuisine. It was interesting to see this all from a child's perspective, yet I wonder if she realized how lucky she was to grow up that way. The book had it's moments, but did not leave a big impression on me.

So after some poking around Goodreads and Amazon these are the four I have narrowed down to, if you would like to help me pick. #GroupU #LMPBC
1. Relish by Lucy Knisley (cooking AND comics, yes please).
2. Nimona by Noelle Stevenson (adventure!)
3. Lumberjanes V 1 (awesome girls, friendship, weird things in the woods)
4. The Prince & The Dressmaker by Jen Wang (a new fairy tale)

TheBookHippie 4-2-1-3 my likes in order 📖❤️ but any is fine ! I‘m so excited! 7mo
Shakespearience @TheBookHippie I know! They all sounded great to me! 7mo

LibrarianRyan I have read all of them but Relish. However, the Prince and the Dressmaker is such a wonderful tale. I tell everyone under the sun to read it. It's a Litsy award winner (i wont lie, nominated by me), it has won other inclusivity awards. I would so read it again, and again, and again. But Pick any. None of these are bad. 7mo
Shakespearience @LibrarianRyan good to know! It sounded wonderful when I read the synopsis. It will likely end up being The Prince or Relish. I am a big foodie so that one really spoke to me. 7mo
DGRachel I've read Lumberjanes and Nimona (I actually have a subscription to Lumberjanes individual issues!), so I vote for Relish or Prince, but I could totally reread the other two, as well. :) 7mo

Picked up this graphic novel that I had on hold at the library. It took a little while for it to come. This was picked for my online book club that I‘m looking forward to reading. It has tons of recipes in it but is a memoir written in graphic novel form. On thing I love about our book club is that I get to read of a lot of things I wouldn‘t have otherwise even known about. Has anyone read this already or even heard of it?

rretzler I‘ve not heard of it. Sounds like a great book club. I wish I could find one. 7mo

"The book you're reading contains a collection of my favorite stories, crammed with the taste-memories that draw them up through my mind from years ago."
-Lucy Knisley

I wanted to like this so much more than I did! New & enticing recipes throughout the book. Delightful artwork. But, Knisley jumps so abruptly from moment to moment that I found it difficult to connect with her story. Maybe if I try cooking some of her recipes I'll feel differently?

A cute graphic novel about growing up as the child of foodies. Along with her love of fast food, Knisley shares stories of growing up, from the city to the countryside, coping with her parent‘s divorce, learning to cook, traveling, and of course, recipes. Bright and vibrant illustrations bring her stories to life.

A foodie memoir in graphic novel format. The author/illustrator, raised by a chef (mom) and a gourmet (dad), shows how food—cooking and eating—has enriched her life and relationships.

A sweet look at the joy of sharing meals with the people we love. And recipes in every chapter!

No trigger warnings here—unless you have food allergies.

Cookies and cream mousse pairs perfectly with this graphic memoir about food. Like all of Knisley's work I really enjoyed the illustrations and the little vignettes of story. I felt parts of this volume were a little redundant, but overall it was a great read. I still think 'Something New' is my favorite of her books...

This was a fun #graphicnovel. I think you have to really be into food and cooking to enjoy it. Otherwise it would be croissants blah blah. 😄 DO NOT read if you are at all hungry or might be hungry anytime soon. I wouldn‘t think I was hungry, then read about cheese and find myself famished.

Zelma I absolutely loved this one. Enough that I might need to buy it for comfort re-reads. 2y
