The Book of Joan: A Novel | Lidia Yuknavitch
post image
Mehso-so

The Book of Joan, by Lidia Yuknavitch, takes a new twist on the Joan of Arc story, where Joan is a warrior fighting to save the earth. Of course humans are the ones she's trying to save it from. I love books about the future that give me something I couldn't have imagined. This certainly did that, but at times felt like it was reaching too far. 7/10 #audiobook #fiction #sff #sciencefiction

Science fiction in translation has been a focus of mine lately. I started this collection of Chinese science fiction in January and flew through the first half before getting waylaid. Then I forgot to post when I finished. Regardless, it's good shit. Learning about how other cultures approach the future tells us immense amounts about the present and how we can build a better future together. #scifi #sciencefiction #translation #shortstories

Lincoln in the Bardo | George Saunders
post image
Mehso-so

This book takes place the night Willie Lincoln is buried and is told by the ghosts of the graveyard and through excerpts from contemporary documents. I really picked this up for the fact that the audio book has 166 narrators. 166. Although it was confusing at first, the narration worked well and made sense with how the book was written. The story was very...unusual, and some readers certainly wouldn't enjoy, but I thought it was a good experience.

Finally listened to this behemoth after having it recommended to me by several people. The moon is destroyed by a mysterious entity and humanity faces a disastrous future. While some parts were just a tad eye-roll inducing, I enjoyed it overall and appreciated the new approach to a common science fiction trope. #finishedbook #sff #sciencefiction #audiobook

Tav I loved it too... I loved the strong female characters. Neal has a new one, 8y

"But we've got one damn thing the phoenix never had. We know the damn silly thing we just did. We know all the damn silly things we've done for a thousand years and as long as we know that and always have it around where we can see it, someday we'll stop making the goddamn funeral pyres and jumping in the middle of them. We pick up a few more people that remember every generation." #hope

Norse Mythology | Neil Gaiman

This was great. I'd forgotten how funny these were and I was surprised by their poignancy. Gaiman did a nice job of telling the stories while keeping his voice absent. Well worth a read. #mythology #norse

I listened to this last weekend during a long drive. It's a very timely read in today's culture. We can learn, if only we'd pay attention. I suggest listening to it because Trevor Noah's narration brings every word to life. Be careful not to drive off the road during the funny parts. And prepare to be uncomfortable, which we all need to be. #audiobook

I finished this one today. It was strong overall, though I felt it could have been a bit trimmed down. A girl is selected from her village by the local baron magician and trained to use her own magic. Peril to the land, hero needed. Kept me engaged. #fantasy #sff

This was a great listen. I've wanted to read it for a while, but jumped on it when I saw the new audiobook version read by Lin-Manuel Miranda. His voice is perfectly suited to the tone and style of the main narrator. The story is engaging, witty, and touching, following the life of a young Dominican man who uses fantasy to make sense to his world. Now I'm going to proceed to read everything Diaz has written. #audiobook

Finished this one yesterday. An asteroid shows up and orbits the moon. We find it's actually a spaceship. Built by humans. The story gets very strange from there, but I enjoyed the tale. At least, the parts I understood. Some may be put off by the hard science and convoluted narrative. #audiobook #sciencefiction #scifi #sff

After devouring Liu Cixin's Three Body Trilogy, I wanted to read some of Ken Liu, who translated two of the trilogy. This is epic fantasy taking place in a world very much like ancient China. It took a while to get rolling, but it drew me in. I'll definitely check out the next one. #sff #fantasy #audiobook #review

In German, the word kummerspeck literally translates as grief bacon and is used to refer to the weight gained from emotional eating. I just love the ridiculousness of this passage. #noir #themoreyouknow #kummerspeck #amreading #sciencefiction #scifi #sff #beenthere #amirite

I swear I went to the bookstore only to pick up the new Robert McGinnis cover for Neverwhere. But then I saw Brian K. Vaughan's Paper Girls, which I have wanted to read for a long time. And the Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy 2016 has arrived. I mean, it's Christmas, right? #treatyoself #neilgaiman #robertmcginnis #papergirls #sciencefiction #fantasy #scifi #sff

I finished this a few weeks ago and it's really stayed with me. This is a heart wrenching story that we should all read. It's a difficult, but necessary, reminder of where our country started and a call to make sure we never go back there again. #remember #nationalbookaward #audiobook

There is something about buying a mass market paperback at the airport that seems so right. I grabbed this during our unexpected five hour lay over and finished it within the week. Some great stories in this collection. #stephenking #shortstories #sff #fantasy #horror #airportreading
