Invisible Planets
Invisible Planets: Contemporary Chinese Science Fiction in Translation | Ken Liu
Readers at Tor and around the SF world have recently become familiar with Ken Liu and his Chinese translation work, via the bestselling and award nominated The Three-Body Problem, by Cixin Liu. Readers who have developed a taste and excitement for Chinese SF by these means will be excited to hear that Ken is assembling, translating, and editing an anthology of Chinese science fiction short stories. It's a very exciting project: the thirteen stories are a strong and diverse representation of Chinese sci-fi, including one from Liu Cixin. Some have won awards in translation, some have garnered serioius critical acclaim, some have been selected for "Year's Best" anthologies, and some are simply Ken's personal favorites. To round out the collection, Ken has also included several essays from Chinese scholars and authors - some previously published on Tor.com - plus an introduction from Ken.

A collection of translated Chinese sci-fi stories. Some are really, really good and others are just confusing. Always interesting to read books in translation — I am definitely missing some context.

This anthology of contemporary Chinese science fiction in translation includes stories by the authors of The Three-Body Problem and Waste Tide. Ken Liu, who translated Three-Body Problem and wrote the brilliant fantasy epic The Grace of Kings, has assembled an eclectic and fascinating collection of short stories. I loved some and could have lived without one or two others, but all in all this was good stuff.

This collection of Chinese SF was translated by Ted Liu and includes essays on the genre in that country. The book is like ‘opening a door into summer‘ (related to one story ending). Folding Beijing rightly won the Hugo Award; the city is divided into three sections, each folding up in turn. A mechanical dragon horse becomes sentient;in a faded ghost town park lives one human child; these and others all excellent. A real sense of discovery!

This is an EXCELLENT collection of some of the most brilliantly imaginative hard science-fiction that I‘ve ever read. Take that and intertwine it with influences of Chinese history, lore, culture, & the political climates, you have something that is inherently rich with innovative motifs & themes. If you enjoy hard, complex, intelligent adult science-fiction, then please read this collection. 🖤

I‘m sorry I‘ve been a bit inactive! I became busy with work & helping a friend through some personal stuff.

How are all of you doing?

These are my current reads. Hoping to have two of the three finished by the weekend. 😺

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This collection of short stories was so much fun to read. I was already a huge fan of Ken Liu, and I picked up this book because I wanted to read his translation of Chinese SF that he enjoyed.. as my first expose to Chinese SF. My favorite stories were Taking Care of God (Liu Cixin), Call Girl (Tang Fei) and Folding Beijing (Hao Jingfang).

• So, I'm slowly making my way through Invisible Planets. I read a story last night and am trying another one now before returning to the Blackbird Season. They're pretty good stories and I'm enjoying it despite hating short stories. 🍂#scifi #scifilit #scifibook #book #booklover #bookstagram #bookblogger #bibliophile #met_createchange

MrBook Great pic! I like how everything matches so well, including your nails. 👍🏻 7y
Sophoclessweetheart @MrBook Thank you so much. 🙊 7y
Tamra Why do you dislike short stories? Not enough momentum? 7y
Sophoclessweetheart @Tamra I don't really know to be honest. I always find I'm put off if a book is more than one story and if I do pick it up then I get bored after reading a story or two. 🙊 7y

I looooved this collection. Some of the stories stood out more than others, but I enjoyed all of them. Same with the essays. Definitely will be watching for more from these authors.

Booklinette Hi there, booksandcooks, what do you like to do in the kitchen? 7y
Megabooks @Booklinette Unfortunately, I don't cook as much as I used to. I was diagnosed with celiac disease about a year ago and have yet to find a rhythm in the kitchen. I make a lot of rice, beans, steamed veggies, and meat, sometimes with pre-made gluten-free sauces. I need to get involved with some gluten-free cooking blogs, but with starting a job and other things, I haven't yet. 7y
LinaLovesLit I keep seeing The Lying Game everywhere. I'm so intrigued! 7y

Science fiction in translation has been a focus of mine lately. I started this collection of Chinese science fiction in January and flew through the first half before getting waylaid. Then I forgot to post when I finished. Regardless, it's good shit. Learning about how other cultures approach the future tells us immense amounts about the present and how we can build a better future together. #scifi #sciencefiction #translation #shortstories

I've fallen down on my #keepingitshort goal of a short story after every book read. But I just finished the first in this collection and it was really fantastic and nightmare inducing if you are afraid of rats (🙋🏻). It definitely left my skin crawling and I'm looking forward to the rest of the anthology!!! #scifi #translated

Great intro to contemporary Chinese science fiction! 13 short stories from 7 writers + 3 essays about Chinese SF, collected & translated by writer Ken Liu. Features a diverse range of styles, from surreal fantasies to hard sci-fi. Some topics addressed: government surveillance, exploitation of workers, economic inequality, & aging populations. Loved the unique societies these authors created to make us look at our own world more critically.

Very short sci-fi has problems giving the reader enough detail to bring these fantastic worlds to life without bogging the story down in exposition. This issue was dated to ignore in this collection but there are some gems, Xia Jia's stories are particularly beautiful
