Loving the buildup to the race and the character of Leyla. London Shah has done an excellent job with The Light at the Bottom of the World, introducing this submerged world and all its many dangers and stakes. Just a really well done book, so far. She also scored points with me by sneaking in a reference to London by its older name of Londinium.

I‘m late to check out this comic book series, and I think I‘ve waited too long with my expectations too high. I‘m still making it a pick, because it does some wild stuff. Especially considering when these issues originally came out in the late 80‘s, they‘re quite amazing. #graphicnovels #sandman

jmtrivera I'll be honest; the first one didn't appeal to me too much either, but I found the series improved as it went. 3w

Monstress Volume 4 | Marjorie Liu

Pickpick

The fourth volume in this series doesn‘t read as strong as the previous three volumes. The story has grown so large that it‘s becoming more difficult to track all the characters and how they connect. This fourth volume comes together in the end, but I was a bit lost during the first half of it. I‘m still on board for the long haul and am eager to see how it all eventually ends. Sana Takeda‘s art is as gorgeous as ever. #graphicnovel #fantasy

CoffeeCatsBooks I agree with you that this one wasn‘t as strong but the artwork is just so fantastic. 4w

So, this is a very weird book. It‘s essentially two books in one (so far). The first storyline tracks a young woman in 1978 on the run from people who want to kill her and posing as a teacher in a remote and exclusive school in the southernmost portion of South America. The second storyline is a ghost from the present who has been sent back to 1978 to haunt that same school. I like the former storyline, not sold on the second one yet.

Holy crap. The ending to this two-book series is a jaw-dropper. My only minor gripe is that the contagion running amok isn‘t as big a focus for the majority of this book compared to the first book, but Bowman delivers a logical progression from the events of the first book. She deserves praise for avoiding a sequel that could have been a simple retread. This series has locked me in as a fan, so I‘ll be reading more of Erin Bowman‘s books.

Gideon the Ninth | Tamsyn Muir
post image
Mehso-so

The last hundred pages save this book from being a pan for me. Tamsyn Muir‘s voice is a blast, and makes following Gideon Nav‘s story more interesting than it would be otherwise. Gideon suffers from a similar problem to Harry Potter: even though she‘s present for a lot of stuff that‘s happening, she herself does next to nothing to advance the plot. That makes the first 3/4 of the book boring. -continued in the comments-

BillBlume I also don‘t think Muir‘s writing is as solid as many are praising it. She does a dreadful job in scenes with a large number of characters and there a lot of scenes with a lot of characters. Harrow seems like the most interesting character in the batch, but I couldn‘t muster any investment in the rest of the supporting cast. “Oh, that Fifth House person died? Okay. Whatever.” -con‘t- 2mo
BillBlume The worldbuilding seems like the most interesting part of the book, but Gideon is so 🙄 about everything and proud of being 🙄, that despite her interesting voice, she makes a dreadful lens for observing this universe. I feel like Tor Books saw the pitch “Lesbian necromancers in space” (which is a BRILLIANT pitch), decided that was enough to sell this book to readers, and then half-assed the editing process. I haven‘t explored many “Star Wars” novels beyond Timothy Zahn‘s contributions (so many tended to disappoint me), but I couldn‘t resist trying DARK DISCIPLE. I met the author, by pure chance, at a writers retreat called The Porches back in 2016, and she was a lovely person. She does a great job with Asajj Ventress, revealing her ultimate fate in the waning days of the Clone Wars. #StarWars

Started The Order of Time by Carlo Rovelli a couple days ago, and it‘s really blowing my mind. In a weird bit of chance, my holds for the ebook and audiobook came in at the same time, so I‘m doing both. I‘m essentially going through this entire book in both formats to help me better absorb the information. I‘d recommend the print book/ebook over the audiobook, even though Benedict Cumberbatch does an excellent job reading the material.

Renegades | Marissa Meyer
post image
Pickpick

Overall, I enjoyed this book a lot. Meyer does a nice job writing Nova‘s inner conflict as she infiltrates the Renegades. Perhaps my only real gripe is when the Renegades do police work. The most glaring example is the library stakeout. Detonator enters the library, and Sketch decides they can arrest her, even though all she‘s done is breath in the same air as their suspect. It‘s as absurd as an episode of “Hawaii Five-O.”

In an interesting coincidence, I‘ve followed up one audiobook with another that both have the same reader. Rebecca Soler did a fantastic job with Seafire, and she does so again here with Renegades. Only, this time, she‘s sharing reading duties with Dan Bittner. He has a superhero type voice which is perfect for this, but he doesn‘t do well with the female voices. I‘m becoming less of a fan with audiobooks that change the reader based on the POV.

After the first three chapters, I was starting to worry a bit. I didn‘t really get a sense of where the story was going, but after finishing chapter four, I‘m locked in. 75% through this book, and I‘m bailing on it. The characters just keeping pissing me off by doing the dumbest things. We‘re talking out-of-character things. I‘m 3/4 of the way through this book, & I‘m close to bailing. All the guys in this book are idiots. Jude‘s decision to throw his lot into Anton‘s card game to bail on his duties as Keeper and chase Hector makes no sense whatsoever. 🙄 This is clearly plot moving character, and if it‘s not, then Jude deserves to be a failure. This is the advantage to audiobooks, because I can roll my eyes repeatedly without losing pace.

Been listening to this on audiobook. The buzz has been deafening for TWCAD, but while I‘m more than halfway through it, it isn‘t lighting my fire. Technically, it does all it should & does it well. I think I‘m just burned out on traditional, epic fantasy. I‘d enjoy the book more if it focused more on Ephyra & Anton. Jude constantly giving Hector a pass because he‘s crushing on him is getting real old and makes it difficult to like either of them.

I enjoyed Katharyn Blair‘s debut a lot. Vesper felt like a great protagonist, and her progression as a fighter and as a person felt well-handled to me. There were a couple plot points that bothered me. Among them was a message left on Sam‘s wall to him that only an oddity could read, and he‘s not an oddity. This is a series, so hopefully that will get explained in a later book. I‘d give this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2. #UrbanFantasy #YA #KatharynBlair

The last issue in this collection is the best, which serves as a eulogy for Clayface. James Tynion IV does a great job with all of these characters, and that he made a B-level villain from Batman‘s many foes into a hero readers care about was an excellent achievement. Tynion‘s love & deep understanding of Batman and his extended family is obvious, but it‘s tough to give each character a chance to shine in comic books, because of the limited space.
