Green River, Running Red
Green River, Running Red: The Real Story of the Green River Killer--America's Deadliest Serial Murderer | Ann Rule
27 posts | 47 read | 32 to read
In the most extraordinary book Ann Rule has ever undertaken, America's master of true crime has spent more than two decades researching the story of the Green River Killer, who murdered more than forty-nine young women. The quest to discover the most prolific serial killer in American history has been an intimate part of Ann Rule's life, with some of the corpses found only a mile or so from where she lived and raised her own daughters. She did not know the killer, but he apparently knew her and attended many of her book signings. For twenty-one years, the killer carried out his self-described "career" as a killing machine, ridding the world of women he considered evil. His eerie ability to lure his victims to their deaths and hide their bodies made him far more dangerous than any infamous multiple murderer in the annals of crime. A few men -- including a law student, a truck painter, and a taxi driver -- eventually emerged as the prime suspects among an unprecedented forty thousand scrutinized by the Green River Task Force. Still, there was no physical evidence linking any of them to the murders until 2001, when investigators used a new DNA process on a saliva sample they had preserved since 1987, with stunning results. Ann Rule has followed the case since July 1982, when the first body -- that of teenager Wendy Lee Coffield -- was found in the Green River, snagged on pilings under a bridge. Rule has compiled voluminous files, working through an incredible 95,000 pages of official police records, transcripts, photographs, and maps, winnowing out the chaff and identifying what is truly important. Over the years, she gained unparalleled access to all the key players -- from King County Sheriff Dave Reichert to those close to the killer and his victims. When finally apprehended and convicted, the killer made a detailed confession -- of his twisted sexual obsessions -- that will shock even the most jaded reader. Green River, Running Red is a harrowing account of a modern monster, a killer who walked among us undetected. It is also the story of his quarry -- of who these young girls were, and who they might have become. A chilling look at the darkest side of human nature, this is the most important and most personal book of Ann Rule's long career.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Making a point to read more Ann Rule. This, her 23rd book, covers the Green River Killer, one of America‘s most prolific murderers. For 20 years, authorities diligently pieced together evidence until technological advances in DNA profiling came into existence. Rule does something I really appreciate here. She tells us about many of the victims; their lives, not just their horrific deaths. This, of course, led me down a GRK rabbit hole.

I‘m sure that many members of #teamslaughter have read the OG Queen of True Crime, Ann Rule. She wrote about cases from the Pacific NW, so she holds a special place in my reading history. What made Rule special was her place in a male-dominated genre and her focus on the victims of the crimes she covered. She was also a fierce advocate for victim‘s rights. “Fun fact:” Gary Ridgway was caught while I was a student at the University of Washington.

This was fine, not my favorite by Ann Rule, but creepy enough that my coworker startled the hell out of me while I was listening to it! I gave this 3⭐.

Mistermandolin I admire the research that goes into her writing. Highly readable as well. 4y

Overall I really enjoyed this book. Ann Rule did a wonderful job covering the hunt for the Green River Killer and all of the facets that entailed.

She also did a great job honoring the victims and telling their stories. So often it feels like true crime focuses on the criminal but Rule spends most of her time focusing on the victims, on their lives, their hopes and dreams, and the people they were taken from.

Unfortunately, I (once again) ended up with an abridged audio. I was only a kid in the early 80s, and not in the area, so it was more recently that I heard of the Green River killer. The book was interesting, but I would have liked to have listened to the entire book. It did seem to jump abruptly from talking about the victims to following the killer‘s life. Not sure if the book actually felt that way or if it felt such because it was abridged.

I had an hour and a half to kill before my husband got out of physical therapy, so of course I spent it at Tim Hortons with a book. #tea

The Green River Killer was at large for over 20 years. When he was finally captured, it became clear he was no #starboy. Anne Rule pointed out that the only thing he excelled at was murder, so in a way being apprehended and seeing his name all over the papers, as well as being an aide in the investigation, gave him the notoriety he yearned for.

This was a vast undertaking and honestly, I found it repetitive and boring. #timbittunes

Reviewsbylola @emilyhaldi I saw you gave it ⭐️ ⭐️. I gave it 3 but that was generous. It was just too much. 5y
Mdargusch Well, I won‘t be reading this one. 🤣 5y
Reviewsbylola Her other books are much better. This one had 48 known victims, so you can imagine the scope. @Mdargusch 5y

Ann Rule was truly a brilliant true crime writer. This is another great read for any of you true crimers. Find my full review here: https://greatmorrisonmigration.wordpress.com/2019/01/24/book-review-green-river-...

KathyWheeler I don‘t know if I just wasn‘t in the mood or what, but I found this boring and never finished it. In Cold Blood was like that for me too, though; I started it 10 times over several years before I finally actually read and loved it. I think I‘m going to have to go back to this one and start again. 5y

I didn't think I'd be able to find ANY books with shoes on my shelves. Luckily, my Kobo and Audible came through again. All of these are TBR, except the tagged book.

So. This was my first Ann Rule book, and overall, it was really well done. Gary Ridgway's crimes would be a huge and daunting subject to write about. I was surprised how quickly it read, given that it's about 750 pages. But there were times I wished for a good editor--things were repeated more than once, sometimes even whole sentences word for word. Rule fans, what else would you recommend of hers??

All those poor women. And Gary Ridgway couldn't even remember much about them. Anne Rule wrote about these women with respect and dignity. This was my first book by her and I loved it. I couldn't put it down.

I'm really look forward to reading more of her books, and to branching out to other true crime novels. This was so intriguing.

Went for blood work and of course I need to bring books. I finished The Elfstones of Shannara and started on Green River, Running Red. I felt like the odd one out in the waiting room though. Here I am with a physical book and everyone else is on their cell phones. Lol (I meant to post this yesterday, but I felt so sick after my three hour insulin resistance testing that I slept all day.)
