#Wrappingifts is #HolidayTradition because I wrap them every year. There are also 3 fairytales that I bought for Leja.

I'll just be over in the corner bawling my eyes out now that I've finished this #HolidayReads. 😢

This is another holiday classic I've seen the Disney version of but never took the time to read the story. It's such a heartbreaking tale, but so beautifully told.

wanderinglynn Another lovely story. You‘re on a roll! ❤️ 5y

(Author: Hans Christian Andersen; Adapted and Illustrated by Jerry Pinkney)
This TL Christmas classic is a sad, beautiful story about a young, poor Danish girl who must brave through the cold December weather to sell her matchsticks before she can go home. As night falls and she is forced to light her matchsticks one by one to stay warm, she is drawn in by visions that combat her loneliness and throw her into her memories.

kgarzon This book can be used as an AS due to the prominence of the author regarding fairy tales. Students can identify the elements of a fairy tale that this book may share with some of his other stories and contrast its themes against them as well. https://edsitement.neh.gov/lesson-plans/hans-christian-andersens-fairy-tales 5y
kgarzon UDL Principle 7.1 (Optimize individual choice and autonomy) can be demonstrated by allowing students to choose any author that they wish to perform an AS on rather than assigning them an author.
EL Strategy 28 (Provide biographies of significant men and women from different countries) can be used for prominent authors from outside of the U.S. and EL Strategy 2 (Promote cooperation) can be used by allowing students to work in pairs or small groups.

DrSpalding This is a classic! Nice idea to perform an author study on Andersen. 5y

I listened to this on Librivox. It didn‘t take me very long to listen to but it broke my heart. It‘s sad but it‘s so well written. I don‘t want to listen to it again. I feel like it‘s going to stay with me for awhile.

It's simple, but my favorite bookish item I have are these matches. I leave them out on my coffee table and use them when I light a candle, which is frequent. #riotgrams

So much emotion in one tiny little story. A tear always comes to my eye when I read it.

Listening to my favorite Christmas Eve tradition: Groovelilly's Striking Twelve radio play, based on The Little Match Girl, on Robert Drake's The Night Before on WXPN. Also, there are puppies on TV.

Can't get worse, or? Depressing story about girl, cold winter, Christmas time with #snow and some passerby #men

#12daysofxmasphoto #snowmen

Ruri_kaichou Makes me cry every time. Disney made a short for this that came with The Little Mermaid DVD a few years ago. It's so beautiful and really hits you in the feels. 8y
azulaco This is in a big collection of fairy tales that I read from every night to my son, and I always skip this one because it's so sad. Hans Christian Andersen is a lovely writer, but there's definitely a depressing aspect to a lot of his stories. Have you ever read The Goblin and the Grocer? It's a beautiful, must-read story for any bibliophile. Not so depressing either 🙂 8y
Simona @azulaco No, I haven't and I googled for synopsis and I'm not familiar with this story. I have read his stories only in Slovenian language so, I assume that we don't have a translation. Thanks for recommendations! 8y

Simona @Ruri_kaichou Yes, beautiful and sad and not at all for the little kids. 8y
LibrarianRyan You all should read matchless. It gives a happy ending to the little match girl. 8y
Simona @LibrarianRyan Blurb sounds more optimistic than original story, thanks 👍 8y
Gissy It is a sad story! Let me try matchless recommended by LibrarianRyan! 8y

As a few of us have said, it's the humans in stories that are often the scariest monsters. Someone gave me this book when I was a kid, and I swear it gave me nightmares. The little match girl's father is abusive. They are heartbreakingly poor. And she dies. Who calls these things appropriate for kids? #allhallowsreads #scaryreads

Martta So true! My mother always refused to read this to me when I was a child. She couldn't get through it without crying. 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Martta Aww. I can imagine. 😢 8y
I-read-and-eat I used to laugh at my Mom for crying over this story when I was a kid, now I can't read it without crying 😅 There is a Dutch theme park (the Efteling ) in which there is a fairy tale woods with fairytales are displayed and this one is among them. 8y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @I-read-and-eat I can't imagine NOT crying as an adult. We know how short life is, as do some kids also. That theme park sounds interesting! 8y
Trav I read this when I was a young girl and remember feeling very empty after I finished it. It stayed with me for years. 8y
raelaschoenherr This is one of the saddest stories! 8y
mllemay Truly traumatizing read for a child 😫 8y
Eyglo The story scared the hell out of me as a child! (As so many other non censored fairytales) I guess what was appropriate to read to child 20 years ago is not the same today 🤗 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Trav @raelaschoenherr @mllemay @Eyglo I thought it was just me - I had a sheltered upbringing. This is a true horror story. And yes, how is it we were even allowed to read it, much less go to sleep afterwards? 8y
mllemay @BarbaraTheBibliophage nope, not just you! I read a sanitized version when I was really young and discovered the true version a few years later and it absolutely shocked me lol. 8y
MyNamesParadise My mom always read this to me and my sister around Christmas time when we were younger 8y
