Devotion: A Memoir | Dani Shapiro
20 posts | 16 read | 21 to read
In her midforties and settled into the responsibilities and routines of adulthood, Dani Shapiro found herself with more questions than answers. Was this all life wasa hodgepodge of errands, dinner dates, e-mails, meetings, to-do lists? What did it all mean? Having grown up in a deeply religious and traditional family, Shapiro had no personal sense of faith, despite repeated attempts to create a connection to something greater. Feeling as if she was plunging headlong into what Carl Jung termed "the afternoon of life," she wrestled with self-doubt and a searing disquietude that would awaken her in the middle of the night. Set adrift by lossher father's early death; the life-threatening illness of her infant son; her troubled relationship with her mothershe had become edgy and uncertain. At the heart of this anxiety, she realized, was a challenge: What did she believe? Spurred on by the big questions her young son began to raise, Shapiro embarked upon a surprisingly joyful quest to find meaning in a constantly changing world. The result is Devotion: a literary excavation to the core of a life. In this spiritual detective story, Shapiro explores the varieties of experience she has pursuedfrom the rituals of her black hat Orthodox Jewish relatives to yoga shalas and meditation retreats. A reckoning of the choices she has made and the knowledge she has gained, Devotion is the story of a woman whose search for meaning ultimately leads her home. Her journey is at once poignant and funny, intensely personaland completely universal.

#AnglophileApril Reading Dani Shapiro‘s memoir felt very #CloseToMe as I really related to her early days. Growing up in an Orthodox home, to parents you admire and look up to. Wanting to please them and make them proud. Being part of a tight knit Jewish community, having a sense of belonging. Our stories do start to fray and take different turns but something about her writing was very honest, raw & connective for me. Loved this memoir.

GlassAsDiamonds Hellloo from Singapore ! What a nice first post to open Litsy to 😊😊😊😊😊😊 6y

emilyhaldi I didn't know you grew up in an Orthodox family! How interesting! This memoir sounds like a good one... #stacked 💙 6y
Cinfhen Anything @Crazeedi whatever connectivity you make to the song title! 6y
Cinfhen I only recently discovered Dani Shapiro @Mdargusch @Reviewsbylola @emilyhaldi and I instantly fell in love with her writing and storytelling. I think she‘s excellent because any reader regardless of your background will feel a connection. She was recommended to me by @Lmstraubie & @LauraBeth two ladies I‘m VERY fond of❤️❤️ 6y
Mdargusch One of the things I always envied about the Jewish faith is the strong sense of family and community. ❤️ 6y
Crazeedi @Cinfhen thank you for clarifying! 6y
Lmstraubie @Cinfhen That's so funny! I'm pretty fond of YOU and @LauraBeth 😘 I ended up purchasing all her memoirs. I want to go back and read them in order. Some I've already read, some I haven't read yet. She writes with such beauty. 6y
Cinfhen I need to read more by her but I‘m not sure I‘d appreciate her marriage memoir. I‘m not a fan of reading other people‘s marriages @Lmstraubie and I miss u xx 6y
Cinfhen Of course @Crazeedi !! How are u feeling?? 6y
LauraBeth Awww - you guys 😊😘 @Cinfhen and @Lmstraubie 6y
Lmstraubie @Cinfhen Miss you too!! Are you coming to the States at all this summer? (I have to reread it, but I don't remember it being too harsh or too mushy or too anything. I know I enjoyed it, but can't give specifics. Not because of her writing, but because of my brain lol) 6y
Crazeedi @Cinfhen I'm doing well with my hip! I have another issue going and I'm so tired of doctors 🤨 so we'll see what happens. Thank you for caring! 6y

Dani‘s search for her Jewish identity, her beliefs, and find a religious home for her family was easy for me to identify with. Esp raising children in a place with not many Jews. I have the same attitude toward bad things happening, i.e. why not me as opposed to why me. I found parts of her story re her son‘s infantile illness difficult to hear as I still struggle to process my child‘s disability. (Pic from my walk).

I‘m not sure if this memoir will appeal to everyone but wow, did Dani Shapiro call to me. Our early years seem almost interchangeable, although I was gifted with the most loving mother & Dani was not. We were both raised Orthodox, in a world full of Jewish tradition, ritual & faith. However Dani starts to question the presence of God, the burden of observance when tragedy befalls her. This memoir is her soulful quest for understanding.

LauraBeth I want to read this! 6y

Lmstraubie I am always profoundly amazed the way her words touch me. 6y
TNbookworm Love your review! 6y
Cinfhen Thank you @TNbookworm @Insightsintobooks @Cathythoughts @JennyM @BarbaraTheBibliophage @LauraBeth @Lmstraubie It‘s not that often that I feel like a book is really “speaking” to me, as both a mother, wife, worrier ( BIG WORRIER) and as a person who is deeply spiritual. I strongly identify with my Jewish roots and all of its rituals, though strange to most are familiar to me. Listening to Dani Shapiro was soothing & comforting. I really connected💕 6y
Insightsintobooks @Cinfhen I agree completely with what you are saying about Jewish rituals, I can't even begin to find the words for them. Even before my conversion, I found a peace in them. I said Modeh Ani, every morning with tears in my eyes, and still do. The first blessing I taught myself, at about 12 I might add, was for the Shabbat Candles. I firmly believe in the concept of a Jewish soul, as I've personally always felt drawn to Judaism and Jewish. 6y
Cinfhen I try to say Modeh Ani each morning too @Insightsintobooks it‘s more of a mantra, my way of letting God know I recognize waking each morning is a gift and a blessing. And I light candles EVERY Friday night and recite the blessings as a talisman of protection for all the members of my family. It‘s what I believe. 6y
Insightsintobooks @Cinfhen Yes, that's how I feel as well. 6y
Blaire @cinfhen @insightintobooks my infj friends I am really feeling these posts. I remember when I first learned modeh ani in school and it is such a comfort to me. And I also light Shabbat candles every Friday. It reminds me to pause during the week and be grateful. 6y
Cinfhen I love seeing these posts too @Blaire @Insightsintobooks and I love that we share similar and “rare” traits...not surprising that we gravitate towards the same beliefs 💕💕💕 6y
Insightsintobooks @Cinfhen @Blaire I agree. ❤❤❤ 6y
alisiakae Lovely review, and I love this discussion. 😍💙 6y
Cinfhen Thanks @4thhouseontheleft I think you would really enjoy Dani Shapiro‘s writing. She‘s also a committed yogi and a soulful individual 🙏🏻 6y
alisiakae I really want to read her latest book, Inheritance. She‘s actually been receiving a lot of criticism on social media lately about it, which is a shame. 🙁 6y
Cinfhen Really @4thhouseontheleft why??? I just read Inheritance & I thought she presented a very honest and fair picture of artificial insemination & donor children very fairly and with sensitively. (edited) 6y
alisiakae I‘m sure she did! The controversy in this area mainly stems from people who strongly believe that the donor‘s right of privacy supersedes an individual‘s right to find out about their identity and history. The same argument applies towards people like me who use 🧬 testing to find biological parents, & is also the argument against states allowing adoptees access to their Original Birth Certificate. 6y
Cinfhen Interesting @4thhouseontheleft there are so many factors and sides to this debate. I can appreciate all the arguments for and against but if I was the one who came into being, I think I deserve the right to know my true origins. 6y
Cinfhen Definitely in 1963 Dani Shapiros biological father never expected that 50 years later a woman could spit into a test vial and find her biological father. It seems like stuff from a sci-fi novel @4thhouseontheleft 6y
alisiakae @Cinfhen That‘s how I feel about it, although I do (kind of) support legislation to open OBC‘s that allows birth parents to file a request not to be identified. But I will never forget how difficult it was to make a decision to bring a child into the world having no clue if I was passing down any highly inheritable diseases. Access & knowledge of family medical records was the primary reason I began my search. (edited) 6y
Cinfhen My husband is adopted and when I was going through multiple miscarriages followed by years of infertility it was very frustrating and upsetting not having a complete medical history - one side of our slate was a complete blank. So I understand your hesitation @4thhouseontheleft My husband NEVER wanted to pursue finding his biological parents and I felt that was his decision not mine to make or encourage. 6y

This is not exactly a sequel to Slow Motion (quite a bit of time passed between the two memoirs), but a great mid-life reckoning, the story of a seeker. Any book that includes the wisdom of Sylvia Boorstein, someone I admire greatly, is a great find. Loved it.
