The Metamorphosis and Other Stories
The Metamorphosis and Other Stories | Franz Kafka
17 posts | 37 read | 1 reading | 8 to read
Excellent new English translations of title story (considered by many critics Kafka's most perfect work), plus "The Judgment," "In the Penal Colony," "A Country Doctor," and "A Report to an Academy." Note.

We went to the Half Price Books clearance sale today, and then they gave us a coupon to the actual store... so then we went there too. This is our #bookhaul. 😁📚

I‘m becoming acquainted with Kafka for the first time this week.

“In the Penal Colony” is something, all right. 😬

CoffeeNBooks I really like Kafka's work. 6y
dariazeoli @CoffeeNBooks The Metamorphosis was great! I think I was just unprepared for how gruesome this story is. The execution machine is out of a King novel 👍🏻 6y
CoffeeNBooks @dariazeoli I've read several of his stories, but I don't think I've ever read "In the Penal Colony." 6y
Oblomov26 I do not get disturbed easily. Kafka can get me and In the Penal Colony in particular made my skin crawl. 6y

RaimeyGallant Nice pic. :) And welcome to Litsy! #LitsyWelcomeWagon Some of us put together Litsy tips to help new Littens navigate the site. It's the link in my bio on my page in case you need it. Or if you prefer how-to videos, @chelleo put some together at the link in her bio. @LitsyWelcomeWagon 6y

The #riotgrams prompt today is “Mugs, Tees, Totes, Swag” so here‘s my literary mug tree! (There are even more mugs in the cupboard above including my heat-reactive Harry Potter mug from the Harry Potter experience.) @bookriot

Rest In Peace, Sam, the flightless butterfly.

Along with his 'brother' Greg (the pair were named after Gregor Samsa in The Metamorphosis), these two disabled butterflies have been our pets for the last 5 weeks.

Here's Lola cat "protecting" our two disabled butterflies on a safe field trip to the back garden.

I've decided to call them Greg and Sam in honour of Gregor Samsa.

Pickpick

May I introduce you to one of my disabled butterflies?

We have been raising some caterpillars, and 2 of them had a metamorphosis that was not quite right. They emerged from the chrysalis with unformed wings. They now live with us as they can't fly.

Poor Gregor Samsa. He has his own metamorphosis and turns into some unnamed insect. Kafka may be a bit of an acquired taste but I certainly have it now.

Maybe I should name this butterfly Gregor?

LauraBrook Poor little dudes/dudettes! I think Gregor is a fitting name. 👍🏼 7y
Laalaleighh Aww that's the sweetest/saddest thing ever! 7y
Libby1 Thanks, @LauraBrook and @Laalaleighh . ❤️🦋❤️🦋❤️ 7y
kspenmoll How sweet, sad, wonderful you are caring for them! 7y
Libby1 Thanks, @kspenmoll . They're still alive and fluttering, and have been enjoying the oranges I put in their enclosure today. 😊 7y

Suzze I adore Kafka. This is one of my favorites. 7y
Libby1 @Suzze - I read The Trial last year and it completely absorbed me. This is my second foray into Kafka and won't be my last! 7y

"Was he a beast, that music should move him like this? He felt as if the way to the unknown nourishment he longed for was being revealed. "

Poor Gregor Samsa.

Moray_Reads I just bought this but goodness knows when I'll get to it... 7y
Libby1 I'm becoming a Kafka fan, @Moray_Reads . I read this story in the collection in one sitting. This is a book that I'll research a bit when I've finished. So many layers of meaning without being heavy or pretentious. I hope you enjoy it. 7y

Truth.

At least my current read, Kafka's Metamorphosis, is a slim volume!
