Marvel 1602 (-10th Anniversary)
Marvel 1602 (-10th Anniversary) | Neil Gaiman
Award-winning writer Neil Gaiman presents a unique vision of the Marvel Universe...set four hundred years in the past! Marvel 1602 combines classic Marvel action and adventure with the historically accurate setting of Queen Elizabeth's reign, to create a unique series unlike any other published by Marvel Comics. Neil Gaiman's daringly different Marvel tale has stood the test of time and spawned an entire universe of sequels - and now, celebrate the 10th anniversary of the story that started it all with this lush oversized hardcover! Featuring an all-new cover by original series cover artist Scott McKowen! COLLECTING: Marvel 1602 1-8

That was a fun, imaginative 1602 version of Marvel characters. I thought the plot was interesting, and there were fun surprises. The characters I was able to identify (there were some name and appearance changes) were Dr. Strange, Nick Fury, Angel, Daredevil, Wanda and Petros Maximoff, Cyclops, Iceman, Jean Grey, Beast, Professor X, Natasha Romanoff, Doom, Peter Parker, Magneto, Fantastic Four, Thor, Toad, and Captain America. Mutants=witch breed.

Thank you for this #WondrousWednesday @Eggs 😊

1. “Starless Sea” by Erin Morgenstern, which I recently received from the wonderful @Branwen

2. “Eon” by Alison Goodman, which I recently gifted to the wonderful @Branwen

3. Tagged! In this alternate history, Jean Grey disguises herself as a man to sneak on a ship, and Angel finds himself falling in love with her.
(More in comments).

DaveGreen7777 Later when Angel learns Jean is really a woman, he reflects on how he loved her just the same when he thought she was a man. It was such a beautiful portrayal of everlasting love, as well as representation of LGBTQIA themes at a time when graphic novels almost never included them. 🌈 (edited) 3y
Branwen YAY! I hope you end up loving The Starless Sea as much as I do! 😃💕📚 I devoured both Eon and Eona and THEY WERE BOTH SO GOOD! 3y

I found this in a free little library and I‘m glad I grabbed it. I‘m not the biggest Marvel fan (hello, Batman❤️), but this was an interesting concept. All of our favourite Marvel superheroes in England 1602. Neil Gaiman is always a fantastic storyteller so this was a clear ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. My only complaint: it was a tad too wordy at times for a graphic novel, IMO. But it was fun to try and figure out who was who. Not always so obvious!

The year is 1602. Steven Strange is physician to the Queen of England; Sir Nicholas Fury is her master of spies. But her hold on the realm is tenuous, and King James of Scotland is poised to take it from her. Gaiman brings together his favorite Marvel ensemble from the comics of his childhood in this paean to the Silver Age. See how many Marvel heroes you recognize in 17th century clothes. I'll wager you miss a few.

Marvel 1602 takes some popular Marvel characters back over 400 years to England and the Roanoke colony. I enjoyed the ways the characters were translated to an earlier time. For example, Sir Nicholas Fury serves Queen Elizabeth I. This picture shows the Fantastic Four. Oh, and randomly, a dinosaur-like creature.

Can‘t wait to dig into this comic basically setting Marvel universe back in time 400 years ago. Lol what a treat. Neil Gaiman wrote it to boot!

DGRachel Gaiman made a cameo appearance on The Big Bang Theory and plugged this comic. I downloaded it for my iPad, but haven‘t gotten to it, yet. 6y

Graphic novel binge post #2.
1602 is still one of my favorite comics of all time. Everyone should read this one.
Damsels vol 2 was good, but ended on a cliffhanger....and the series ended.😠
The Road to Metal was a decent lead in to the big DC Metal event.
Robotech gave me classic anime flashbacks.
I Kill Giants was WAY different than expected. Not bad, just different.
Future Quest has all the greats of the 60s. A Space Ghost origin story!!!

GrilledCheeseSamurai Great stuff! I wanna read Brian Woods version of Robotech. 👍 6y
madamereadsalot1 I love 1602! Gaiman+Marvel=amazing! 6y

Woohoo! Finished this one. I love Gaiman‘s work and this was no exception. It was a little more difficult since I admit I had no knowledge of the Marvel characters other than the little bit I‘ve seen on movies. I had to keep asking my husband who people were and how they fit together. But it was an excellent story.

maximoffs I couldn‘t do it 😂 Kudos to you 7y

Great fun for all Marvel fans. I don‘t see it as a good starter for those not well versed in Marveldom, but it‘s fun to see what might happen if the age of heroes had occurred during colonial times. Neil Gaiman is a clever story teller, but this was wordy (for a visual medium). Perhaps, too ambitious a tale for the length.

Well, turns out that I am just not a great X-Man fan, no matter in which time period the story takes place. So it's just a "meh" for me.

Bailedbailed

I love all things #neilgaiman but I bailed on this one. I love the idea of #marvel characters in 1602 but not being a marvel superhero kind of girl, a lot of this was lost on me.

Sace I have tried so many times to read this. I just can't get into it. 8y
Betty_Bookworm @Sace Yeah- I definitely think it's a better read for people familiar with the marvel characters. 8y

Maybe I was expecting more because it's Gaiman or maybe I just have high standards but I didn't love this? And wasn't intrigued enough to finish. Plot was lacking which was sad and a white Native American Cap really bothered/unsettled me.
