A woman uncovers earth-shattering secrets about her husband's family in this chilling page-turner from New York Times bestselling author Heather GudenkaufSarah Quinlan's husband, Jack, has been haunted for decades by the untimely death of his mother when he was just a teenager, her body found in the cellar of their family farm, the circumstances a mystery. The case rocked the small farm town of Penny Gate, Iowa, where Jack was raised, and for years Jack avoided returning home. But when his beloved aunt Julia is in an accident, hospitalized in a coma, Jack and Sarah are forced to confront the past that they have long evaded.Upon arriving in Penny Gate, Sarah and Jack are welcomed by the family Jack left behind all those years agobarely a trace of the wounds that had once devastated them all. But as facts about Julia's accident begin to surface, Sarah realizes that nothing about the Quinlans is what it seems. Caught in a flurry of unanswered questions, Sarah dives deep into the puzzling rabbit hole of Jack's past. But the farther in she climbs, the harder it is for her to get out. And soon she is faced with a deadly truth she may not be prepared for.

3.25⭐
-suspense thriller
-cold case murder mystery
-coming home
-unanswered questions, lies, & betrayals
-This is one from her backlog and probably not as compelling as her current material.
-I didn‘t guess the ending but I wasn‘t trying to, either…like I didn‘t quite care enough to try???
-Christina Traister‘s narration was just okay for me.

FEATURING: MISSING PIECES by Heather Gudenkauf

MISSING PIECES will have mystery lovers scratching their heads until the last pages as well as loving the intrigue.

See if you can solve the mystery of the 30-year-old murder as well as the current one. The twists and turns along with the very suspenseful ending will have you on the edge of your seat and guessing until the end.

Having read and enjoyed several of the author‘s earlier books, I admit to harboring high hopes for my first #audiobook of hers! Unfortunately, the plot disappoints with predictability and Sarah, the MC, is frustratingly stupid despite clues falling into her lap... I paused my #AudioColoring several times to roll my eyes!

Almost painful. I agreed to read and review to books for an author I have not previously read, at least not that I can recall. They are both cozy Mysteries which tend to be and Indulgence of mine, especially at this time of year when so much is going on and I just need a little fluff! Sadly I must admit I was quite unimpressed, no depth or dimension to this story at all. it seems choppy at points and unfinished, and then it rushed to the finish.

This book made me so mad! The author seems unaware of how stupid the protagonist is. The twist ending is easy enough to figure out if you remember the last line of a nursery rhyme that the novel references. The writing was tedious. The author felt it necessary to describe the steps to scan a document at the library. Arg!

BookishMarginalia I enjoyed more than you. Could be the medium -- you can't skim and skip in an audiobook! 8y

This was another book with huge potential that just wasn‘t well executed. I had a huge disconnect with the characters and as much as the author tried to portray Sarah as a smart woman, she sure came off as stupid. Her marriage to Jack wasn‘t believable to me either. The twists were all mediocre and yawn worthy with lackluster secrets that were easily guessed. Give these pieces a miss. Full review on www.novelgossip.com

MyNamesParadise I expected much more from this book too. I gave it so-so because there were elements I enjoyed. 8y

While Raz napped I finished this thriller. It was definitely entertaining, but due to a spate of weird dreams I think I'm going to have to switch genres for a little bit. #dogsoflitsy

This was an enjoyable read overall, though at times the main character annoyed me: she kept asking herself stupid questions and making assumptions whose wrongness should have been obvious. Still, the premise --what happens when people return to the hometown they have avoided for 20 years? How do you cope with learning your spouse has lied to you about the most basic facts of his life?-- was compelling enough to keep me reading. 3.5 ⭐️

[DELETED] 2232195534 I got a bit frustrated with this one. Liked it, but with reservations. 😀 8y
LauraBeth This sounds like a good premise 8y
BookishMarginalia @kaysreadinglife That's a good way of putting it. I feel it's one revision away from being a really great book. @LauraBeth It is! What is weaker is how the main character (the narrative point of view) "investigates" the murders. I have little patience with stupidity, in real and In fictional life ? 8y

A woman's mother in law died many years ago and her husband told her it was a car accident, but she was murdered. In the present, another family members died under suspicious circumstances. The writing is simpler and less nuanced so it moves quickly, 55% through and enjoying it so far 😊
