The Republic of Pirates
The Republic of Pirates: Being the True and Surprising Story of the Caribbean Pirates and the Man Who Brought Them Down | Colin Woodard
The untold story of a heroic band of Caribbean pirates whose defiance of imperial rule inspired revolt in colonial outposts across the world In the early eighteenth century, the Pirate Republic was home to some of the great pirate captains, including Blackbeard, "Black Sam" Bellamy, and Charles Vane. Along with their fellow piratesformer sailors, indentured servants, and runaway slavesthis "Flying Gang" established a crude but distinctive democracy in the Bahamas, carving out their own zone of freedom in which servants were free, blacks could be equal citizens, and leaders were chosen or deposed by a vote. They cut off trade routes, sacked slave ships, and severed Europe from its New World empires, and for a brief, glorious period the Republic was a success.

I believe this author had as his mission to write the best researched, most thorough account of the Republic of Pirates, founded by pirate Benjamin Hornigold, in the Caribbean. The escapades of many a pirate (so many I forget who‘s who), and every ship won or lost, are detailed in this book. Which, unfortunately, makes for a boring pirate book. This book is a well-written assembly of facts and for that reason it‘s a pick for me. It‘d be an ⬇️

Texreader excellent textbook—original sources are cited. Where facts are unknown, he informs us. And I learned an enormous amount of history of the Caribbean and proved how little did I know how the early American east coast was so ravaged by pirates. Just beware, it‘s a long slog. #readingtheAmericas2023 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB 9mo

I‘m about a week back from vacation and I just can‘t get back into reading other than an audiobook during a business trip the last couple of days. This was not a reading vacay, so busy everyday sightseeing. So I‘ve come back in a reading slump. It‘s high time I continue with this one, I‘d gotten to chapter 3 before I left. Just trying to find the motivation

Oof. I wish I‘d looked at Litsy ratings before I grabbed this audiobook from the library. The subject matter was interesting, but both the audiobook narrator‘s delivery and the writing itself were as dry as a textbook abandoned on sand. Not a terrible book, but disappointing and a bit dull.

UwannaPublishme That‘s dry! 😆 3y

If you're looking for swashbuckling derring-do, then look elsewhere. This is not like the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, but rather a bit dry, text bookish account of the so called Golden Age of Pirates. Too many names to remember who's who, and more about the economics of piracy than I cared to know. 3 💥💥💥

This is a good book if you are interested in historical pirates and not just the “arrggghhh, matey!” shenanigans of Hollywood portrayals. It is very well annotated chapter by chapter at the end of the book. The Goodreads description says it inspired the show Crossbones but I see very little similarity other than a name or two. Give it a go if you want the real history.

“Sniveling puppies” . . . Apparently “puppy” was quite the insult in the early 1700‘s 😂 I have run into it several times throughout the book. I rather enjoy Black Sam Bellamy‘s take on organized religion, as well. Sounds like not much has changed in the last 300 years. 🏴‍☠️

Merp first DNF of the year. Insane interesting topic and time period but omg it's just info dumping made even worse by the narrators voice. Oi vey...the author tried to give some sort of narrative or make it more readable for the general public but it does not work. Plus the narrator is just like a uni lecturer.

This is a well-written, clearly thoroughly researched account of the golden age of piracy—and the book is filled with recognizable names such as Blackbeard, Vane, & Anne Bonny—and the Englishman who brought it to an end. It‘s also dense with details about who sailed where & the size of the ship they captured as well as its cargo etc... I wanted more social history. Interesting & informative but ultimately I wanted more about life on/off the ships.

I really enjoyed this book and I‘m blaming that on Black Sails but in a really good way! I was already invested in these people as characters on this show and was motivated to read this book to find out their true history and I loved seeing the truth and comparing it to the fiction I had been exposed to. Woodard did a good job chronologically telling the history of this Golden Age of piracy. I learned a lot and finished intrigued yet satisfied!

WhatDeeReads I never tire of seeing Charles Vane on your timeline. You really make me want to go read about some pirates. 5y
TheNextBook @WhatDeeReads I started rewatching Black Sails so even though I‘m done with this book you may still get more Charles Vane on your timeline. 5y

Checking in with this one. I‘m 100 pages in and it isn‘t horrible. It‘s actually doing a pretty decent job with chronologically explaining what happened. My biggest problem is that there are a lot of “may have happened” “more than likely happened” “probably happened”. Some questions just dont have definitive answers so Woodard is speculating.

What a slog. It has taken 208 pages but now feeling a little action. I am not sure if the distaste for the book comes from the writing, the lack of solid source material, or the overhyped premise of pirates. I am going to stick it out cause I just can‘t quit 🙃

Obviously Hollywood glamorizes the life of pirates, but I didn't realize exactly how much glamorizing they actually did. Pirate life was brutal! While the book has some highlights, you feel like you are reading the same thing over and over again (one ship approaches another... sometimes they get away, sometimes not) to a point where it felt monotonous. Would like to see the tv series they created based on the book for comparison.

If you have any interest in the Golden Age of Piracy or enjoyed Black Sails, you'll love these all-true accounts of the great pirate captains and their deeds. You'll learn, too, of how and why an ordinary sailor might choose - or be forced - to turn pirate.
