The Wolves of Willoughby Chase | Joan Aiken
17 posts | 45 read | 26 to read
Wicked wolves and a grim governess threaten Bonnie and her cousin Sylvia when Bonnie's parents leave Willoughby Chase for a sea voyage. Left in the care of the cruel Miss Slighcarp, the girls can hardly believe what is happening to their once happy home. The servants are dismissed, the furniture is sold, and Bonnie and Sylvia are sent to a prison-like orphan school. It seems as if the endless hours of drudgery will never cease. With the help of Simon the gooseboy and his flock, they escape. But how will they ever get Willoughby Chase free from the clutches of the evil Miss Slighcarp?

If you've ever received a swap box from me, it's probably had a candle in it from fromthepagecandles.com - I absolutely LOVE her book-themed candles!! She's currently having her annual mystery sale, where you tell her a book, and she sends you a custom candle based on it! It's SO much fun and every year my mom, sister, and I have trouble deciding which books to choose!! I think the tagged will be one this year. Check it out if you're interested!!

JenReadsAlot I think I'll do this! 1y
TheAromaofBooks @JenReadsAlot - She has a space where you can put in any scents that you really hate or love so it helps make sur that it's a surprise you actually like, which makes it even more fun 😂 1y
wanderinglynn Thanks! I just ordered the mystery + a couple more! ❤️🕯️ 1y

tdrosebud How interesting! Does she then research your book to figure out scents? 1y
TheAromaofBooks @wanderinglynn - I have an unfortunate (for my budget haha) addiction to her candles. They smell fantastic!! 1y
TheAromaofBooks @tdrosebud - Yes!! If she isn't familiar with the book already, she reads the blurbs an tries to pick up the vibe haha I've been so pleased with the way she's captured several of my favorite books. 1y
wanderinglynn I love candles too. I have quite a collection. And I‘m totally blaming you for my purchase! 😜🤣 1y
TheAromaofBooks @wanderinglynn - I'll take the blame! When you get them, you'll have to let me know what books you picked and if you think the scents match how the book should smell!! 1y
MittenGirlPeach I did this last year after you posted and then I placed another larger order. Soooo happy with everything. This year I got the email, jumped and down, then chose two gifts plus one for myself. I‘ll let you know how it goes! 1y
TheAromaofBooks @MittenGirlPeach - Yay!! I just genuinely love her candles, and my sister and I get especially excited about this sale 😂 This year I chose The Wolves of Willoughby Chase and Uprooted and am SO excited to see what she does with them!! 1y

I first heard a bit of this story on a PBS show where an artist would draw scenes of a story while excerpts were read aloud as a voice over. I could never remember the book‘s title or author - until now.

Thanks for the tag @jenniferw88 😘

Not an actual chase but I loved this book as a child!

1. I had a hamster called Andy. (Named after Andrew Ridgeley from Wham! 😳) Showing my age here....
2. I‘m thankful for my cosy fire!

Consider yourself tagged if you want to play along - particularly if you had an embarrassingly named pet! 🤣

AlaMich I had a hamster named Ding-Dong. Here in the US it‘s the name of a chocolate snack cake that I was fond of as a child. Tells you a lot about me right there! 🤣 3y

So this is weird:

I checked out The Wolves of Willoughby Chase from the library and read it in 2018.

Sometime this spring, I got a notice from Libby that my digital hold on The Wolves of Willoughby Chase had come in. I hadn't placed a hold, so I cancelled it and moved on.

Today I logged in to my library account - and a physical copy is in transit to me via ILL. What is going on?? Why does the library want me to have this book again?

wanderinglynn Apparently the library thinks you need to read this book again. 😂 4y
effani @wanderinglynn Right?! It was good but I really wasn't planning on rereading it this soon! 4y
Smrloomis 😂 I like that persistency! 4y

A book a day from my shelves with a few random thoughts - Day 3:

This is one of the first chapter books I remember reading on my own, and it was deliciously frightening. I still try to read this one every winter and still relate more to quiet Sylvia than bold Bonnie! Set in an alternate England where wolves abound and not everything is as it seems. Highly recommended!

Leftcoastzen Gorey cover? 4y
readingjedi I loved this so much as a child! 4y
batsy I love this book! 🖤 4y
TheAromaofBooks @readingjedi @batsy - It's SUCH a classic! 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Leftcoastzen - it took me a minute to realize you were referring to a person and not commenting that my cover was gory 😂 I'm not sure if it's one of his or not - the copyright page doesn't specifically reference the cover illustration, so I know for sure he didn't do the inside pics, but am not sure if the cover is one of his works. It's definitely in his style! 4y

1. I literally don't remember a time in my life that I wasn't reading just for fun! Tagged book was one of many childhood favorites.
2. The Gulf War always comes to mind, because I had a cousin who fought in it.
3. I have a mom who loves to fuss over you when you're sick, so we were always bundled up & given lots of orange juice & rest time. Honestly, getting sick was kind of fun because Mom would fix up a special bed on the couch & completely ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) pamper you!!
3. I haven't heard much from @SaturnDoo lately - hope all is well!! ❤

I wish this book and I would have crossed paths when I was a child. Nonetheless, it was an enjoyable read. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Back to one of my favourites again! Sylvia and Bonnie skate on thin ice indeed as they're out and about when the wolves are likely to be around.

Yes, today's prompt has defeated me ... I've just gone ahead and replaced the tigers with wolves 😂

saresmoore I want my next reading challenge to be just reading whatever Suba recommends for a whole year. I suppose that would be a bit lazy on my part, but I bet it‘d make for some excellent reading! 5y
LeahBergen 😂😂 5y
batsy @Ruthiella 😁🐺 5y
batsy @saresmoore ? But I'll worry about you if you do. I think it'll be largely spinsters and bleakness and despair and the occasional "fun" children's book where they escape from wolves? ? 5y
saresmoore I mean, that sounds pretty great. 🙃 5y

Can't believe I never read this as a kid. Has all the elements I love and would have adored as a child - orphans, strong female lead characters, running away, and other assorted adventure...plus a mansion with secret passages. Will be continuing with this series and can't wait to read with my kids. Thanks to Gretchen Rubin for the recommendation. #strongfemalecharacter #childrensclassic

This beloved book was read aloud to my sixth-grade class many, many moons ago. I just finished reading it aloud to my ten-year-old. It's quite the adventure with resourceful children, a happy ending and a rich vocabulary. As well received today as when it was written.
