It's a confusing book for new fans of fantasy but any fans of Pratchett and/or Gaiman will appreciate it. I'm glad I have read it, but it's not going on my top ten fantasy novel list.

(I should probably admit the title appealed to me because I'm a Slytherin and it reminded me of Parselmouth!)

I couldn't have planned it better!

Help! I'm headed for Estonia next in my #backpackEurope challenge and I'm not sure which one to read.
SNAKISH is set in a "fantastical version of medieval Europe", following a young boy who is the last speaker of an ancient tongue that lets him command animals.
DOVES is a literary spy thriller set in communist Estonia in the 40s-60s. SNAKISH author is from Estonia, DOVES is set in Estonia but was translated from Finnish.
What should I pick?!?

I felt rather let down by this one. I don't know if it's the writing or the translation, but the language was awkward, clunky, and juvenile. There was a potential to explore so many issues (tradition vs modernization, colonialism, man vs nature) but nothing ever got beyond a very surface level. Very disappointing.

I liked this book much more than I expected to. It is an Estonian book that uses Estonian folklore to tell a story where holding on to past customs competes with adaption new technology. And it's funny.

"I would've been much happier if Pärtel had died--then I could have mourned him in peace. But now I knew that he was still moving around in some distorted, defiled form; he existed, but not for me. I had the feeling you have when someone takes your good old trousers and shits in them; the trousers still exist but they can't be worn anymore; they are full of a disgusting alien smell".

I just had the longest day. Editing footnotes on an essay collection for 8 hours followed by 2 hours of classes resulted in a massive headache. Hopefully I can unwind with this new book. Going to postpone my #orangecover and #magicalcover to tomorrow. I want some good light for these 😉 (a little obsessed with book photography) All your lovely, pretty cover pictures today really cheered me up! Thanks Littens I love you all! 💛

#bookmail is the best mail! Finaly my new books came in. The man who spoke snakish and Uprooted are both going with me on our travel to Edinburg and Miss Peregrine will be my Halloween read. Who has read any of these books? And if you did, what did you think?

Hot damn, this was an amazing book. Part fable, part fairy tale, part alternate history—all amazing. Read it!!

Book mail, book mail, book mail! My BOTM order FINALLY came in, aaaaannnnd I got my ebook settlement books. Woo hoo!

It's time for an Estonian folkish fantasy that supposedly mixes influences from Tolkien, Beckett and Miyazaki. And it's a bestseller in Europe so let's not argue and read already!!

This story was so promising! Well written, clever and witty at times - but overall disappointing. I have no doubt there will be a movie. I could say more but a lengthy review won't help this book and left me so disinclined to care that I'll just leave it at that.

Half-way through and I'm still not sure how I feel about it. I've read that people are comparing it to a fairytale. I disagree. It's more of an anti-fairytale disguised as a folktale. Impatiently waiting to see what I think of it when I'm done.

Surprise rise to the top of my to be read pile, and boy is it interesting!!

Holy moly, this has to be one of the most shocking and surprising books I've read in a long time. Couldn't put it down for the whole last half. It explores a lot of interesting themes (adapting/assimilating to different cultures/staying true to yourself) with a lot of twists and turns.

Reading this for book club at work. It was slow to start but now I'm hooked into the world and story. Happy to have an hour extra this morning to read more.
