Girl from Venice
Girl from Venice | Martin Cruz Smith
The highly anticipated new standalone novel from Martin Cruz Smith, whom The Washington Post has declared that uncommon phenomenon: a popular and well-regarded crime novelist who is also a writer of real distinction, The Girl from Venice is a suspenseful World War II love story set against the beauty, mystery, and danger of occupied Venice. Venice, 1945. The war may be waning, but the city known as La Serenissima is still occupied and the people of Italy fear the power of the Third Reich. One night, under a canopy of stars, a fisherman named Cenzo comes across a young woman s body floating in the lagoon and soon discovers that she is still alive and in trouble. Born to a wealthy Jewish family, Giulia is on the run from the Wehrmacht SS. Cenzo chooses to protect Giulia rather than hand her over to the Nazis. This act of kindness leads them into the world of Partisans, random executions, the arts of forgery and high explosives, Mussolini s broken promises, the black market and gold, and, everywhere, the enigmatic maze of the Venice Lagoon. The Girl from Venice is a thriller, a mystery, and a retelling of Italian history that will take your breath away. Most of all it is a love story."

I first heard of this book from Litsy &added it to my TBR list. It was better than the reviewer said! Cenzo, a fisherman in the lagoon around a WWII-era Venice pulls a girl from the water to find out she is a Jew on the run from the SS & the man who betrayed her family. Cenzo decides to help her but navigating the political sphere of war‘s end Italy is more treacherous than a stormy sea. The man who reads the audio book is very good. #litsytbrlist

This is set at the end of WWII and as the title suggests is set in Venice and surrounding area. It was ok but I am not raving about it! #books #bookcover #bookmad #read

As usual, the author chooses an interesting scenario to explore a familar theme. In doing so he paints a vivid picture of Italy's final days of alliance with Nazi Germany.
A well researched storyteller, his narrative of the simple fisherman's efforts to save a young jewish girl has enough background detail to distract from the unlikely relationship. The hero, Cenzo, manages to solve all of his problems. Cenzo, of course, gets the girl at last.

Finished my first #lmpbc of round 2. Though I enjoyed the setting, Italy during WWII, the story was just ok. Aside from the main character, I didn't care for the other characters or the storyline. @Alfoster @TK421 @Velvetsun

I'm getting ready to start my choice for the #LMPBC . @Marmie7 @Alfoster @Velvetsun are you going to use a journal for your notes, or will you annotate the book itself?

Alfoster @Marmie7 @Velvetsun I was planning to write in the book itself as that‘s what I thought it was about. But I‘m totally happy doing a journal instead! I‘ll do whatever everyone else wants to do😀! 6y
TK421 @Alfoster I planned on just using the book as well. 6y

Finished book #2 of #24in48! Sadly, neither have been home runs! I liked this book, I just didn‘t love it. It‘s a good story but does seem to spin in circles in some places. I think on the heels of Beneath a Scarlet Sky, this one falls flatter than I‘d hoped. 2.75*

I really enjoyed this book. It gives an interesting view on what it was like in northern Italy at the end of WW2. Likeable characters, good plot, and a satisfying ending. I'll definitely read more of his books after this.

I received this book from Goodreads and haven't dedicated time to devour it. Last night I made the commitment and stopped where it has become a love story. Even though the phrase "love story" is on the jacket, I didn't believe it and I'm still finding it hard to believe. So let's see where this goes!

I'm traumatizing you today with all of these temptations, aren't I 😁? #TBRtemptation post! My library just received a copy of this late-2016 book. Check out this cover: another beauty 😎👌🏻! My kind of read 😁👏🏻👏🏻! #blameLitsy #blameMrBook

I distinctly remember learning to pronounce "facade". I was a junior in high school and was reading a John Jakes book. I ran across the word, and asked my teacher, Mrs. Mulch, how to pronounce it. She gently corrected my pronunciation and told me I could always come to her for help. She was also my chorus teacher and a very important role model as an educator and a musician. I miss her a lot and I think of her whenever I run across "facade". ?

BooksForYears What a sweet memory! 7y
LindaGrace812 💕 It was a teeny school, so Mrs. Mulch taught me English for three out of four years, P.E. one year, and chorus all four years. Thankfully, I only had my mom to two classes! 😁I love my mom, but she was tough and that made it hard to be her kid! 7y

A tale of Italy during the last days of Mussolini. Interesting characters, great descriptions of the waning days of the German occupation but after awhile, just didn't have much interest in what happened to anyone.

A fisherman finds a young woman floating in a lagoon. He thinks she's dead. She's not, but she IS Jewish, and the Nazis would like her to be. Set in occupied northern Italy near the end of World War II, THE GIRL FROM VENICE has shady characters, snappy dialogue, and an occasionally confusing plot.
