Lost in Shangri-La
Lost in Shangri-La | MItchell Zuckoff
Three months before the end of World War II, a U.S. Army plane flying over New Guinea crashed in uncharted mountains inhabited by a Stone Age tribe. Nineteen passengers and crew were killed and two were mortally wounded. But somehow three survived: a lieutenant whose twin brother died in the crash, a sergeant who suffered terrible head wounds, and a beautiful member of the Women's Army Corps.

Just finished this up real quick over the weekend before tomorrow's book club. I was a little nervous at first, but I think the author did a great job. I especially liked getting accounts from the native people as compared to the Americans. It went a little in depth at times on a few points but overall enjoyable well done read. #nonfiction #ww2 #bookclub

#OctoberXFiles Im going literal for this prompt...A real life adventure to New Guinea in 1945 in the final days of World War II. 24 bored soldiers and members of the Women‘s Army Corps embark on an aeronautic joy ride over a newly “discovered” landscape — mountains populated by thousands of combative #ManEater(s). But the joyride turns into an aerial disaster when the plane crashes, killing 19 onboard & leaving 3 survivors in the jungles below

HIGHER GROUND

These characters unfortunately made it to “higher ground.”

I really enjoyed this fast-paced story of a plane crash in Dutch New Guinea near the end of WWII. I learned a lot about the Papau natives, Women‘s Army Corp and courage.

This is the fascinating true story of 3 Americans forced to acclimate to life with the natives of New Guinea after surviving a plane crash on the remote island in 1945, a time when most of the island was still unchartered. Amazing to read about the friendships formed between the survivors and the tribespeople of this island, especially considering hardly anything was known about the tribes at the time.

So, a long time ago, I asked for survival story recs and someone recommended this. I can't remember who you are, but I want to thank you. This has EVERYTHING I love: plane crash, survivors, natives, a daring rescue, honorable men and women AND it's all true. I even learned some new facts about WWII, which is one of my favorite time periods to read about. Highly recommend this for readers of nonfiction/history.

Eggs Sounds so good 7y

I've got plenty from and about China, Japan, India, Hong Kong, Korea, and even former Soviet nations. So much Asia, but I couldn't believe I don't own anything that's set in or written by someone from #SoutheastAsia...until I laid my eyes on this old, unread ARC, set on the island of New Guinea. This dates back to when I still worked at Borders (more than 6 years ago 😢) Maybe it should move up on my TBR pile! #AprilBookShowers
