Red Harvest | Dashiell Hammett
28 posts | 40 read | 18 to read
When the last honest citizen of Poisonville was murdered, the Continental Op stayed on to punish the guilty--even if that meant taking on an entire town. Red Harvest is more than a superb crime novel: it is a classic exploration of corruption and violence in the American grain. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Title that begins with the letter R
Dashiell Hammett's Red Harvest. I am hard-pressed to think of another book as influential in terms of film adaptations. It was adapted as an influential spaghetti western as well as an influential samurai film, among others. The only other Hammett story I have read is The Maltese Falcon, but between the two I def prefer this one.

Vansa Yojimbo is such an excellent, excellent movie. Even the way the dust swirls is a work of art. Mifune at his absolute charismatic best 2y

Probably a low Pick. It made me gasp in shock at one point, and the plot was fairly pacey, so that was good. Definitely a hard-boiled read.

I re-read this one too, for Detective Fiction. I think I liked it even more the second time. Even though I knew it was coming, it was still fun to read the absolute spiral this town, and the Op, goes through. As far as noir goes, it‘s a gas.

I wasn‘t sold on Hammett after my first two reads but this was a good one. As I was reading it, I wasn‘t sure how I felt about it. Much like Personville/Poisonville, it grew on me. The backstabbing, double-crossing, hip-deep crap-wading was fun AND not fun! These characters are all so unlikable that I started to cheer for their downfalls…we fall down the violence rabbit hole right along with our narrator. 202/1,001 #1001Books

Day 5 - #Harvest #DashiellHammett #FallIsBooked #1001Books

Read & enjoyed:

Detective-story master Dashiell Hammett gives us yet another unforgettable read in Red Harvest: When the last honest citizen of Poisonville was murdered, the Continental Op stayed on to punish the guilty--even if that meant taking on an entire town. Red Harvest is more than a superb crime novel: it is a classic exploration of corruption and violence in the American grain.

RamsFan1963 Great book!! One of my favorites 4y
EadieB @RamsFan1963 I love these old-time mysteries. Hammett, Cain and Chandler etc. are the best! (edited) 4y

It took me a minute to warm up to this one, but in the end it was worth the read. Not as snappy as The Maltese Falcon and much bloodier, Red Harvest is the story of a good detective cleaning up a dirty town and becoming a stranger to himself in the process.

Red Harvest is a classic exploration of corruption and violence in the American grain. Hammett is a master of the noir detective crime novel. Characters are definitely unique. He was a Pinkerton Detective and his Continental Op is an example of that era. Dinah Brand is a 'gutsy broad' popular in the 1920's. Looking forward to reading The Glass Key novel. Recommend this to those who love noir crime.

A Hero's Journey: Hammett writes classic noir novel "Red Harvest" featuring an unnamed private detective; Kurosawa transposes the action to 19th C Japan in his film "Yojimbo" featuring an unnamed samurai; Leone sees "Yojimbo" and remakes it as Spaghetti Western "A Fistful of Dollars", featuring an unnamed bounty hunter, (Kurosawa sues Leone for plagiarism); Hill officially remakes "Yojimbo" as prohibition-era gangster movie featuring "John Smith".

Faibka ❤️ this photo!! Yojimbo is my favorite Mifune-Kurosawa film I think (though of course there‘s 7 samurai...) I knew A fist full of dollars was a remake but didn‘t know that Kurosawa had sued, interesting! 6y
Faibka I had no idea that Kurosawa had based it on RH. I read it a long time ago but never made the connection so I guess it merits a reread! Thanks for sharing such interesting information :) 6y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk And “John Smith” in Last Man Standing was played by Bruce Willis! Who, let‘s be honest, is no Toshiro Mifune. 6y
Bookwomble @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I do like Willis in that film, but, no, he's no Mifune 😏 6y

This book read like an action movie, filled with crime and corruption. Had I watched it on tv, I would have zapped to another channel. I read on however because it is a #1001books and because I was mildly interested. Glad it‘s done though!

I read it for the #1001bookswap and received it from @Sarah83 . Who will I send it to now? @tricours @Dulcinella ? #stdb

Sarah83 Quite my opinion 6y

Finished my first book for #1001bookswap #stdb2018 . It was entertaining, but not the kind of book I would normally tend to read. Some scenes are still bizarre to me, but sometimes I had difficulties with the American slang 🤷 Hope you @BarbaraBB @tricours & @Dulcinella will like it more than me 😉

@BarbaraBB as you have finished your book, I would pass you this one now? I will make up a parcel as you are waiting for 'magic mountain' aswell. 😉

BarbaraBB Haha, the magic mountain parcel! 💕I guess you‘re still reading it? I would happily read your book, if @Dulcinella or @tricours doesn‘t want to read it first? 6y
Sarah83 @BarbaraBB no. I finished it, before I started this one. So I could send the two books together. 😍 Magic mountain is quite a chunkster and I can't send it with an envelope,so I already bought a little parcel. 😉 6y

#booktober #debutnovels Dashiell Hammett's first might be my favorite by him and also contains one of the best #openinglines: "I first heard Personville called Poisonville by a red-haired mucker named Hickey Dewey in the Big Ship in Butte. He also called his shirt a shoit." Making this my #recommendsday pick too - a fantastic, hard-boiled noir read. @RealLifeReading

Am I really the first to post about this amazing book? 😱 Get off your ass and get Red Harvest! I'm always amazed by Hammett's ability to weave exposition into the rich voice of the protagonist, his ability to conjure visuals. This is the essence of hard-boiled detective fiction. 🚬🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

brittnaypozen Omg I haven't read this in so long! 8y
PurityofEssence @brittnaypozen It's so awesome! And because of Hammett's writing style you can burn through it in a single evening. It's just so much fun to read, I revisit it several times a year. 🤘🤘🤘 8y
