Mehso-so

I have read a couple of books this year that mention - or in the case of Tom Lake revolve around - Our Town. I have somehow gotten through this life without seeing or reading the play and thought I should correct that. It isn't a play that is performed around my area so reading it was the way.i think I would have more affinity for it if I had learned it in highschool. It is a sad story and 👇.

ChaoticMissAdventures I understand why Patchette had her MC holding on tight to the memory of playing Emily. Overall though I found it all to be a bit boring, I had to take long breaks between acts. But I do understand the themes of life passing you by and the ebb and flow of generations. And Poor Emily. Maybe we should bring the play back to a wider audience to talk about maternal mortality now seems like a good time. 1w
rubyslippersreads I had to read it in high school and found it depressing. There‘s an old movie version, starring William Holden and some of the original Broadway cast, that makes me think Hollywood had the same concerns. (edited) 1w
Susanita Yesterday I learned that Aaron Copland did the music score for the movie. 7d

TheLudicReader It‘s definitely worth watching. There‘s a version with Paul Newman as the stage manager that‘s really good. I first discovered it in the 1970s with a production starring Robby Benson (❤️) and thus began my love affair. I wrote my honours thesis on it, and so while I understand it seems dated, the themes are universal and the scene where Emily returns to her 12th birthday guts me every time. 7d
ChaoticMissAdventures @TheLudicReader I always feel I get so much more out of a story when I am doing bookclub, or a school project on it. Reading it in an afternoon on my couch with only Ann Patchett for context probably did it a disservice. @rubyslippersreads @Susanita looks like I will need to find the movie somewhere! It all feels very Americana- Rockwellian which I can appreciate for what that is.

rubyslippersreads @ChaoticMissAdventures I think the Paul Newman version that @TheLudicReader recommended may be available on YouTube. I haven‘t seen it yet, but I‘m sure it‘s much more faithful to the original play than the old movie (available on Prime Video). 6d
TheLudicReader Yeah, the movie is not worth watching, @rubyslippersreads @ChaoticMissAdventures 6d

I had one last prompt for my NEWTS challenge, and it was to read a book based on or inspired by Shakespeare, and fortunately this one fit the bill! I've read a few Ian Doescher books, and this one was just as fun as I thought it would be!

Pelleas et melisande | Maurice Maeterlinck
post image

I don't need much persuasion to be listening to #Finland 's national composer, Sibelius, but as it's his birthday today, it seemed rude not to mindfully do so.
Sibelius derived his Pelléas et Mélisande suite from his incidental music for Maeterlinck's play about the doomed love of the title characters. The setting is a decaying castle deep in the forest, which fits the mood of the book I'm reading, "Gossip from the Forest".

The play-reading spree continues! I recently finished off these two in quick succession and loved them both. Even on the page, you can see how engaging Fleabag was as a live solo work, and being a huge fan of the TV series, it was cool to see what was chosen for expansion in a new medium. Meanwhile Choir Boy is one of my favorite new plays of the past decade(ish). One review called it "a poem inside a play" and I couldn't agree more.

Romeo and Juliet (Updated) | William Shakespeare
post image

Two weeks ago, I saw the new Broadway production of Romeo and Juliet, so of course I had to revisit the source material beforehand! Like a million others, R&J was my introduction to Shakespeare. I don't love this play but I'm grateful for the teacher who made my 6th grade class read it. It made me a stronger, more confident reader in general and got me curious enough to seek out more of Shakespeare's work, enriching my whole life as a result. ❤️
