Mini book haul of the day. Love Haruf's books--not much happens, but I can't put them down

Last night I pulled a book off my bookshelf to read. I opened it to go to the first page to see if I wanted to read it, in the inside cover I found...MONEY!!!!

After telling this story to one of my book groups and to my mom, it lead me to wonder...What is the craziest thing other people have found in their books?? Either something you put there or maybe you got the book from someone and found something they left behind. I would love to know!!!

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I wish I would find some money 💴 4y
TrishB I brought a second hand book in a collectors shop and when I got it home there was a set of black and white old photos in the back. I took them back to the bookshop and they said I know they‘ve always been there!! So they are still in the back of the book 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ 4y
Reviewsbylola Shit, I wish my books would rain money on me! 💰 4y

LibrarianRyan This happens all the time in library books. Pictures and post cards are common. Money some times. Canceled checks. Once a condom (unopened thank goodness) and once a chocolate bar. One of the minis. It was Hershey. We have found pressed flowers, and also dead bugs. A few hair ties. paper clips and post its. 4y
AsYouWish @TrishB Awww....that is so cool!!! 4y
AsYouWish @LibrarianRyan Ummm....so many thoughts!!!! I am also a notorious post it/notecard user. I have also used bandaids still in the wrapper (good for when you get a paper cut while reading). Wow!!! I can‘t even imagine the reaction to some of the things you find in books!!! (edited) 4y
Patchshank I got a book from like 1906 or something. I gave it to my mom for Christmas. She found all sorts of paper stuff in it. One was an obituary from the 1940's I think and one of those to/from tags that are on Christmas gifts. I wonder if it is the original tag that was on the book. I think there was a few other things, but that's all I remember. Someone's life story stored in a book. I found it interesting. 4y
AsYouWish @Patchshank Wow!!! That is so cool!!! 4y
booksandsympathy Last month I re-read a couple of my books I hadn't read in about 12 years. When I opened up the second book in the series, I found an index card with a recipe on it that I'd been looking for on and off for those 12 years. 4y
marleed Oh you just gave me an idea! If I put a dollar bill in all my books, someday when my kids have to sort through them, the task might give them a pile of laughs - and likely cover their next house payments on their own homes. 4y
AsYouWish @booksandsympathy Oh my goodness!!! That is a good find!!! Those things are always in places you never think to look. 4y
AsYouWish @marleed That is a cute idea!!! In my case I would probably forget I did that and then be super excited when I found money in a book I want to reread....oh wait!!!!😂😂😂 4y
Mrs_B I recently found a sonogram in a used book. 🤷‍♀️ I posted it back to the hospital as it had the mother‘s name on it to see if they could reunite. I found it inside this book... 4y
AsYouWish @Mrs_B Wow!!! That is an interesting find!!! I hope that the hospital was able to get it back to the family!!! 4y
Laughterhp I used to hide my money in books when I was a kid. Like my holiday money and stuff. I used to hide it in my Nancy Drew books because I read about someone doing it in them. 4y
AsYouWish @Laughterhp It is a great place to put/hide money. 4y
RainyDayReading I‘ve found lots of interesting things in books! Though I think the weirdest thing was a flyer with a very bizarre looking fetus on it and the back of it was talking about the horrors of abortion and was talking about “save the date” for a church service or something 🤔 It was in a murder mystery. But the best thing has definitely been some really cool bookmarks 😁 4y
AsYouWish @RainyDayReading Wow!!! That is a weird find!! I love when I find bookmarks in books!!! 4y

Pickpick

I've become somewhat interested in collecting first editions of books. So, this nonfiction title was a good pick for me. It discusses what to look for as far as the condition of the book (mostly hardbacks, but also some paperbacks) and how to discern if it's a first edition. To a lesser extent, the book goes into how to judge if authors are collectable and/or have staying power. Enjoyable read for me.

1. Mystery, lit classics, some nonfiction
2. Memoir
3. Romance
4. Don't watch movies or TV much, so no opinion
5. Hmm, I'm drawing a blank--maybe because I don't read much in genres I dislike. There's too much out there to read and too many books on my TBR list already
6. Little Women - hated it
7. @WeeziesBooks @phatsallylee @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

This is one of the reasons why I absolutely love old books! I opened one i bought and found a bunch of clovers, including a few four leaf clovers! ☘📚

Mdargusch Ha! I leave 4 leaf clovers in so many books! 7y
emilyhaldi Love this 🍀🍀🍀🍀 7y
Branwen @Mdargusch Do you really? That is so cool! I'll admit, I never had thought of doing that before! I really want to start though! ☘🍀💚 7y
Mdargusch I press them in books and then forget they‘re there. 🤦🏼‍♀️ 7y
Branwen @Mdargusch Hahaha! I feel like that's probably what I'm going to end up doing too! 😁 7y

Took my daughter and her friend to lunch followed by a trip to The Book Lady's Book Attic for some gently used book looking! $57 later.... (not pictured, two hard cover Ever After Ever books and a paperback Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle -- those went home with the friend)
