Another cute little graphic novel that my son cannot get enough of.

Sweetkokoro Oh I love this series as does my daughter. Have you guys watched the cartoon adaptation on Netflix? 4y
brandierickson @Sweetkokoro yes he loves it! And I like it because it actually has a plot haha 4y

#bookreport

It would have been a pretty quiet reading week without the two graphic novels to pad out my completed books. Sinus headaches kept me from reading for a chunk of the week.

But I did watch a lot of good shows (Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, JoJo Rabbit, Hilda, and Locke & Key) during the times that headaches prevented me from opening a book.

I waited on the holds list for months for the 3rd Hilda volume! All library copies were lost/trace, until they purchased a new copy, so it was a surprise when this came in!

I love the relationship between Hilda and her mom, and this is a strong one in the series. I was finally able to fill in the gap and see how Hilda adjusted to the move to Trolberg.

Now I can finally watch the Netflix show! 🤣

Clare-Dragonfly I‘ve heard good things about the show—I didn‘t know it was based on books! 5y

This week‘s #weeklyforecast!

Crazily, I have been at the top of the holds list since this summer for the Hilda book. All copies had gone missing, but my library just bought a new copy! 🙌🏽

My #bookspin book - Silkworm - has made it on to my TBR pile this week!

Their Eyes Were Watching God is a reread for book club. I‘ve heard the #audiobook is fantastic.

The little one is on summer break and is doing everything to refuse reading. Her and reading just don‘t get along right now and it frustrates her and makes her want to stay away from it. But Graphic Novels keep her attention, they are fun to read and look at. This is why I will ALWAYS advocate that graphic novels are BOOKS! If it gets her reading that‘s all I care about! Graphic Novels are Books!!

wanderinglynn Who says graphic novels or comic books don‘t count as books? It‘s in their titles: “novels” & “books”! 6y
Sweetkokoro @wanderinglynn I have actually seen a few people here on litsy who do not believe they count as books. And have encountered many others in person. I agree it‘s in their titles! What bugs me most is when these same people say Picture books are worthwhile books because of their targeted age range. Meanwhile believe GN are not even though they are basically the same thing!! 6y
LibrarianRyan Amen!! Has she tried Cucumber Kingdom yet? If she can do Hilda she can do Cucumber. 6y

Sweetkokoro @LibrarianRyan No she has not done that one! I will see if my library has it and get it for her. She loves Hilda! 6y
LibrarianRyan @Sweetkokoro it‘s 2 or four books long. It‘s very cute and full of girl power even though the boy is disposed to be the “hero”. And so much tongue in cheek with names, play on words etc. love this series. 6y
Sweetkokoro @LibrarianRyan Ah it sounds so fun to read, I just checked and my library has 3 volumes of it, so once we are done with Hilda we will be checking it out! Thanks for the recommendation! 6y
LibrarianRyan @Sweetkokoro while I‘m at it because I can‘t seem to stop. Geeky fab five. It‘s a new series. Book 1 is out and book 2 is due any time. Also Cardboard Kingdom. Plus if you have any desire to start weening her onto others maybe try Baby Mouse or DragonBreath or Lunch Lady, or Squib. These are not really GN but close. They are a nice bridge between the two. 6y
Sweetkokoro @LibrarianRyan I will be checking my library for all of those as well. She has read Baby Mouse, and all of Diary of A Wimpy Kid, and Dork Diaries, she is currently working on Stick Dog and Stick Cat. I agree they are a good Bridge between the two. But right now she is just losing that will to want to read so GN are my go to, short and fun, not a lot of pressure but enough to keep her mind going. I appreciate this so much! 6y
LibrarianRyan @Sweetkokoro I so get it. Good luck. 🍀👍🏻 6y

My favorite character gets introduced in this one, he is a talking bird and that it is all I‘m saying on that! The art reverts back to the same style as the first volume in this one and from then on stays consistent. We start to get a bit more involved with her relationship with her mother and how Hilda is dealing with living in a town and not a forest anymore. Her relationship with her mother feels real (it‘s not always happiness), & I love that

Book 3 in the Hilda series sees Hilda & mom moving into the city. I was worried the change of scenery would mean less of the odd creatures Hilda so easily befriends, but even while trying to learn the habits of city children to fit in, Hilda finds her own way. And both her & mom get used to city life & stresses.
And the Bird Parade is super cool - if only our own towns had such things!

The littlest one pulled this off the shelf today at reading time. I didn't remember we even owned it. She's not always that into reading, but she loved the comic book structure and that she didn't need to know the words to understand what was happening. May need to look for some more of these.
