Beyond Good and Evil
Beyond Good and Evil | Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche
Beyond Good and Evil: Prelude to a Philosophy of the Future is a book by philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, first published in 1886. It draws on and expands the ideas of his previous work, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, but with a more critical and polemical approach. In Beyond Good and Evil, Nietzsche accuses past philosophers of lacking critical sense and blindly accepting dogmatic premises in their consideration of morality. Specifically, he accuses them of founding grand metaphysical systems upon the faith that the good man is the opposite of the evil man, rather than just a different expression of the same basic impulses that find more direct expression in the evil man. The work moves into the realm "beyond good and evil" in the sense of leaving behind the traditional morality which Nietzsche subjects to a destructive critique in favour of what he regards as an affirmative approach that fearlessly confronts the perspectival nature of knowledge and the perilous condition of the modern individual.

Libro pesante, impegnativo, che fa riflettere, forse anche troppo. Una soddisfazione arrivare fino alla fine e forse il libro più bello che mi letto. In qualche modo ti cambia.

I read this to fulfill Bookriot's Read Harder task: Read a book you've been intimidated to read. I could barely comprehend it. He talks a lot about various philosophers of his time and also from earlier times. I didn't know enough about their theories to really understand his arguments.

Starting it today. Hope to finish it by Sunday :D

What are your plans for the weekend?

veritysalter I am in awe of anyone who will read Nietzsche for fun. I dreaded Nietzsche and Heidegger at university. German philosophy is beyond me. 5y
RedJhon @veritysalter I gotta admit it's not an easy read. Especially with the numerous references Nietzche draws from other philosophers!! Would you recommend any other books? 4y

• Sadly, a #DNF for me. I was in over my head trying to understand what Neitzsche was writing. Shame because I like #philosophy and would like to explore his work. Maybe I'll try another of his or revisit this one in the future, but it's not for me right now •

Bailing around the 10% mark. I think philosophy books are just not for me... this is going straight over my head and I just don‘t get anything out of it. I had a similar reaction to Peter Singer‘s One World Now book. For me these books are more suited as text books rather than laymen trying to get some exposure to the ideas.

My fave non-fiction novel. Yes, I admit, its sexist even for the time but that's forgivable if you know the man's history with women. Beyond that its a concise and timely philosophy that encourages one to become their own person. I even prefer it to Thus Spoke Zarathustra (which it summarizes) although the imagery suffers for the sake of brevity.

There might be a #moral or two to be gleaned from these books. Perhaps I'll know once I actually read it 😬

#nuyear @TrishB @Cinfhen

vivastory I've only read tiny bits here and there. So intimidating... 7y
Cinfhen I‘m sure there‘s lot to be garnered but like @vivastory said👆🏽#intimidating 7y
vivastory @Cinfhen Glad I'm not the only one! I do like philosophy, especially aphorisms by Schopenhauer & Cioran. But Nietzsche can be opaque. 7y

Cathythoughts Nietzsche 😱. Nice one 👍🏻I remember dipping into him years ago. I think my Nietzsche days are over. I‘m sure he‘s brilliant, but hard going 📖 7y
shawnmooney Good luck finding your Nietzsche in life! 😛😂 7y
batsy @Cathythoughts Thanks 😘I too sometimes feel the time has passed... I keep waiting until I'm smarter to read him but what I do know with each passing year is that I'm not getting smarter 🙃 7y
batsy @shawnmooney oh my gawd Shawn!! Is this the best or worst pun 🤔😂😘 7y
Cathythoughts @shawnmooney 😂😂Love It 7y
REPollock Would it help to know that he was a misogynist douchebag with some interesting ideas? I had to read him with a lot of 🙄 & 🍷 & oh-honey-🤔🤭🤫😬 7y
batsy I've heard about that aspect of him, @REPollock 😣Also that his worldview was rather reactionary. When I read him the 🍷🍷🍷 will definitely be necessary 7y

150 years later and Nietzsche's philosophy is still as insightful and radical as ever.

It wasn't what i hoped to expect, the book was about personal views about its time Germany and such. To put simply; it is neither a novel nor story to enjoy or learn from. This kind of book for those who study philosophy's history.
