This was 1st in series (I'd read 2nd Different class already) + a really well plotted thriller set in the claustrophobic setting of a North of England private boys school. Elderly Latin teacher Roy straitley finds that with a new term he is under pressure to retire but suddenly the school seems cursed by misfortune which appears to be orchestrated by a malign presence in the school. Really enjoyed the characters and twists, an enjoyable read.

Cuilin Loved this book. Great twists. 2y
TheLudicReader I didn‘t realize it was part of a series. Loved this one, though. 2y

I‘ll finish this … “I‘ve come too far to turn back now” but this book has left a bad taste behind. With the possible exception of Roy Straitley, I found myself detesting these characters. I know that‘s exactly what Ms Harris is doing: showing us the underbelly of private education, but this reader needs to find something to care about, and it‘s lacking here. You almost find yourself rooting for the evil “Mole” as he schemes to ruin St Oswald‘s.

An entertaining thriller about a game of wits between an old and young faculty member at a private school for boys.

What motivates the young teacher? Is it ambition, jealousy or something else?

This book had an amazing plot twist I did not see coming! I‘m excited to one day read the sequel.

Recommended for fans of campus novels and literary thrillers.

Okay. Whilst I didn't overly like this book, it's flippin amazing in its execution and twists and turns and unravelling. Glad I'm stubborn and stuck with it! 😅🤗

I think I wanted to like this more than I actually did. I put it down several times to read other books because I felt I needed a break from it. Don‘t get me wrong, it‘s a good book. Although I figured out the twist way before it happened, it was good and I enjoyed the denouement.

A great, suspenseful novel set in an English all boys school. Someone is trying to bring St. Oswald‘s down...but who? And why? I guessed the main twist, which was surprising, but I follow Joanne on Twitter and that gives insight to her personality. Lots of unexpected smaller twists that added to the story, too. Different Class showed up today and I think I‘ll be picking it up sooner rather than later!

Joanne Harris' books like a good French wine: look like a regular glass of red but has unbelievable aftertaste. It tricks your taste buds to a common plot but then knocks you down by unexpected twist. It's a psychological thriller with well-written characters, logical and unpredictable ending. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Cannot wait to read her new 2017 book ❤️

It is so irritating and frustrating that American publishers neglect translations from other languages in books. In "The Secret History" there were dialogues in Greek with no translation, l just guessed they were clever conversations. In 'The Time Traveler's Wife" there were poems in French and Germane, sure it was beautiful and about love. Here I guess this Latin is witty irony. Sometimes I check Russian versions, they do bother translate inserts

Eyelit I hate that too! I wish they'd at least do notes at the end or something. If I'm really super curious and not lazy I'll do a google translate... but that effort often takes me away from the flow of reading... so it doesn't happen often. 8y

I wasn't afraid of him. I had been once; but you can get used to anything in time, you know, and nowadays I paid as little attention to his rages as the inhabitants of Pompeii to the volcano that was one day to extinguish them. Most things, repeated often enough, can become routine; and mine was simply to lock the bedroom door, whatever came, and to keep well out of his way the morning after.
