Everybody's Fool
Everybody's Fool | Richard Russo
Richard Russo, at the very top of his game, now returns to North Bath, in upstate New York, and the characters who made "Nobody s Fool "(1993)" "a confident, assured novel [that] sweeps the reader up, according to the" San Francisco Chronicle "back then." " Simple as family love, yet nearly as complicated. Or, as "The Boston Globe "put it, a big, rambunctious novel with endless riffs and unstoppable human hopefulness. " " The irresistible Sully, who in the intervening years has come by some unexpected good fortune, is staring down a VA cardiologist s estimate that he has only a year or two left, and it s hard work trying to keep this news from the most important people in his life: Ruth, the married woman he carried on with for years . . . the ultra-hapless Rub Squeers, who worries that he and Sully aren t "still" best friends . . . Sully s son and grandson, for whom he was mostly an absentee figure (and now a regretful one). We also enjoy the company of Doug Raymer, the chief of police who s obsessing primarily over the identity of the man his wife might ve been about to run off with, "before" dying in a freak accident . . . Bath s mayor, the former academic Gus Moynihan, whose wife problems are, if anything, even more pressing . . . and then there s Carl Roebuck, whose lifelong run of failing upward might now come to ruin. And finally, there s Charice Bond a light at the end of the tunnel that is Chief Raymer s office as well as her brother, Jerome, who might well be the train barreling into the station."Everybody s Fool "is filled with humor, heart, hard times and people you can t help but love, possibly because their various faults make them so stridently human. This is classic Russo and a crowning achievement from one of the greatest storytellers of our time."

My daughter has a Girl Scout event at a local library a town over & they have a clearance rack of books that you don't technically need to pay for! Instead of taking advantage, I only got what I had money for. I feel like I bought this Russo already, though. There might be a giveaway soon.... 🤣🤣

Well I‘m glad I️ read this follow up to Nobody‘s Fool. This isn‘t as focused on the same characters. Ten years have passed so some have died off. A minor, unsympathetic character from the first book becomes the center of the story, and is humanized in the process. Another aging white guy. But still good! Very fun, interesting, and satisfying, with lots of zany twists along the way. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Such a great cast of characters! Many LOL moments as the people of Bath, NY live their day to day lives. I like Sully; the grumpy old man who deep down really cares about himself and others.

I loved returning to the characters and setting from Nobody's Fool. Sully is back and in this book more time is spent with one of the other characters that was on the side in the last one. Love the humor and small town antics. Definitely want to read more of Russo in the future!

Russo brings humor and insight into the banal and ordinary through the beautiful use of language and shifting perspectives. The story takes place over three days in a small town through the eyes of its blue collar inhabitants, yet it somehow bigger than those three days.

The book maintains the tone of the original, but it isn't reductive and doesn't provide easy answers. Yet it manages to move the plot, characters's emotional development forward in a very satisfying way. I high recommend it!

Such a wonderful continuation from Nobody's Fool. Richard Russo really knows how to take such a rag bag of characters and turn this into a story where you care for most of them. Would love to see one more book.

Owlizabeth I read Nobody's Fool roughly a million years ago. Should I reread before picking this one up? 8y
BookMusings @Owlizabeth I haven't read Nobody's fool and I loved Everybody's Fool so I would say you don't really need to... 8y
Lauren.Archer @Owlizabeth I don't think you need to. There might be a few elements from the first book that carry over, but the first 100 pages do a decent job filling in the gaps. 8y

Mehso-so

23 years after Nobody's Fool introduced readers to the cantankerous, Donald (Sully) Sullivan and other memorable residents of small town, No Bath, NY, comes this much anticipated sequel. I wasn't thrilled with this installment. It picks up 10 years after Nobody's Fool. Unnecessarily long, frequent changes of POV and the slapstick-like antics of townspeople got to be a bit much. This story and dialogues felt better suited as a movie script. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

BethFishReads 🙁 I liked it more than you did, but I agree that Nobody's Fool was better 8y

I love when books end with a word on the font, and I really liked the one they chose too. When I was finishing up my own book that should be out in few months (he said sheepishly) picking the right font was so so hard. It was enough to make a guy throw up his hands and yell 'Fine...ARIAL!!!'
