I loved both of Janet Mocks memoirs. Her 1st (I have around here somewhere but cannot find) called Redefining Realness and this 2nd tagged one take you through her growing up as a Native Hawaiian, through poverty, her fight to get gender affirming care, and through college and her 20s.
She has gone on to be an amazing show runner with documentaries and her Pose TV show.

The Gorgeous Janet Mock tells about her 20s being a Trans woman going through college, and learning to live in her body.
Her writing style in this stays consistent with her other books it is a bit flowery compared to other biographies, but you can tell is wholely Mock. This book is inspiring, uplifting, and refreshing while feeling completely honest.

What an amazing woman and such a great writer. I this one about her 20s, it is a memoir about finding your way and being comfortable in your skin and, what does that look like.
Recommend all of her books.

In her second memoir, Janet Mock tells the story of her 20s, a time in her life that was a period of intense change and growth for her. She fills in some gaps from her previous memoir while also going beyond the first book by telling of some experiences she had after that volume ended. This book allows the reader to get to know her much better. Ms. Mock has been to hell and back and has overcome much; she has my respect. TRIGGER WARNING: RAPE.

Focus in this book is on her twenties - relationships, education and first working experiences. In these memories she touched many topics, but she stayed just on the surface and that is my main “disappointment”. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #Nonfiction - by a trans author

I listened to this and while I remember enjoying her first book a bit more, I liked this one a lot too. She‘s a good writer and her stories are moving. Highly recommended.

Writing is a bit forced in the top half. She would make a fantastic fiction writer but some of the scenes she paints are a bit too much in a memoir.
I am so inspired by her. I think her story is one to read and understand.

Listened to this one and enjoyed every minute. Janet‘s voice, literally and on the page, is so soothing, smart, and lovely.

Janet Mock is the epitome of class and fully represents the American Dream and how it can really be acheived. She is a strong, driven, intelligent, woman of color who just happens to have been born male.

Her first memoir was one of my absolute favorites so I‘m looking forward to this. #LGBTBooks #QueerBooks

I didn‘t find this book to be life changing for me, but I‘m glad listened to it. Mock is a beautiful writer with a story worth telling. I highly recommend the audiobook because Mock is also a great narrator.

I spent my morning reading this book in one sitting. I'm in awe of this woman. Her writing is fantastic and her story is touching. I love that this was not a trans 101 memoir, rather, it's her story- of coming into her own, making her life, and existing in her spaces.

Dogsitting this guy, and I finished up Surpassing Certainty. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I thought her first memoir was so well done and this one was just ..fine. Her experiences don't create a compelling narrative and the writing seems a bit choppy. 😕

I find Mock's memoirs interesting, compelling and relatable. Her life experiences have been much different than my own, and I appreciated hearing her perspectives on gender, race, and color as well as about her relationships and career path. She doesn't owe anyone her personal story, but I am glad she has chosen to share it. This is particularly good on audio.

I started listening to this book this morning. I love the soothing sound of Janet Mock's voice.

Such beautiful writing & insights by such an honest women, I can't sing the praises for her enough. Definitely read her first memoir "Redefining Realness" first just so you have a better understanding of everything that came before and influenced her 20s. Her courage in honesty just floors me. This book, just like her last one, is narrated by her and she does a stellar job. Then go check out her podcast funny and interesting. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

Finished this on audio last night. I read Redefining Realness a few years ago and loved it so I knew I would want to read her second memoir. Given that I just turned 30 this year myself, its interesting to compare how our 20s shaped us. Our stories are not very similar on the surface, but finding your voice and knowing who you are things anyone can relate to, no matter the circumstances. Particularly recommend the audio by the author. 🙌🌈💜

- The first time we fall, we are new to that experience. Nothing can quite compare to it, because you'll never be that young, that open, and that willing. But when you've loved and lost, when you're forced to grow and move on, let go and love again, you become cautious. You learn to protect yourself, to be on guard. You are never as available.

Meandering, but poignant. A good read about growing up and into yourself.

Of course I loved this. Reading Janet Mock is like sitting down with a good friend. Here she discusses the beginnings of her career, sharing her story with friends, and her first real relationship. I think I prefer her first book to this one, but this was still fantastic.

Best book of 2017 to date.

I really can't describe how good it is. It's so honest and forthright. Janet Mock allows her readers to know her completely. You know that she left out no details. Surpassing Certainty is beautifully told. I'm so grateful I got to read it and to hear her talk about it and to meet her.
