The Homeric Hymns
The Homeric Hymns | Michael Crudden
5 posts | 11 read | 6 to read
The Homeric Hymns honor the Greek gods. Once attributed to Homer, it is now accepted that the hymns were composed by later poets working in the same tradition, probably during the seventh and sixth centuries BC. This volume offers a new faithful verse translation of all the hymns, ExplanatoryNotes, and a Glossary of Names.

I‘m going with the Homeric Hymns (here translated by Jules Cashford). Because they‘re delightful and somehow no one seems to read them.

Other H‘s, each a candidate for a different reason: Hamlet, The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, Hot Milk by Debra Levy, The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton, How to Be Both by Ali Smith

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Thank you for sharing!! 2y
batsy I have not read it! And now I must 🙂 Some great other picks, as well: Hot Milk and House of Mirth 🙌🏾 2y
Liz_M I guess I should finally add Hot Milk to the tbr. 2y
Graywacke @batsy the hymns are a nice follow to the classic Greek plays. 🙂 2y
Graywacke @Liz_M Hot Milk is fun and strange (although kidzdoc hated it) 2y

It‘s EXAM day...! 😬😱 I‘m so anxious and nervous, quite frankly at panic stations. I‘m confident in the fact I‘m more than prepared for the questions on Homer but seriously panicking over what the Material Culture questions might be. 🤦🏼‍♀️ My daughter has confidence in me and that‘s giving some comfort. Wish me luck! I‘ll see you on the other side! #bibliophile #bookaddict #bookish #booklover #bookworm #bookblogger #classics #classicist

Pickpick

This is the first translation of the Homeric Hymns (don‘t let the title deceive you - the author of this is unknown) that I‘ve read. Some #hymns had me giggling and some had me astounded by their beauty. I chose this particular passage because of its reference to #Hekate, the deity with whom I am most connected. The notes are not mine - I never write in or dog-ear books. #poetry #greekmythology #usedbooks #hecate #persephone #demeter #zeus #hades

Dear Littens, I've been quiet for a little while because now I'm back home in Germany and haven't had time for myself so far. It's wonderful to be reunited with my family again, but also tiring. Today jet lag got me, so I'm taking the opportunity to get some reading for #coursera done 😊I'm really enjoying this course about Greek and Roman #mythology!! I wish all of you a wonderful Christmas 🎄✨💓📚

DreesReads I want to read more of the hymns before I finally tackle Ovid, I should see if my library has that edition! 7y
Tsubame @AudreyMorris I bought it on Amazon, it's not expensive. Besides I've just started reading the assigned parts, but that makes me want to read the other hymns as well! I'm really so glad that I found this course thanks to you 😊 7y
Faibka Merry Christmas @Tsubame ! 😃💕💕📚📚 It's great that you get to spend it with your family 😊 I'll need to check out that course in Greek mythology 7y
