From the Wreck
From the Wreck | Jane Rawson
From the Wreck tells the remarkable story of George Hills, who survived the sinking of the steamship Admella off the South Australian coast in 1859. Haunted by his memories and the disappearance of a fellow survivor, Georges fractured life is intertwined with that of a woman from another dimension, seeking refuge on Earth. This is a novel imbued with beauty and feeling, filled both with existential loneliness and a deep awareness that all life is interdependent.

What a freaky little number. I loved it. Not my usual genre (sci-fi historical fic?), but I went along for the ride. For some reason it reminded me of Playing Beattie Bow by Ruth Park, which is a childhood favourite 🤔. Thanks again for enabling me @LeeRHarry 🙏🙌. #ozfiction

LeeRHarry You‘re very welcome - so glad you enjoyed it! 😊 12mo

Just started to read this lovely little number sent to me by @LeeRHarry for our #aussiesecretsanta. I thought Lee had miraculously picked an #unknowntomeauthor and Australian at that! Then I scroll back through the Litsy posts on it and see that I have had numerous encounters with this book & had added it to my stack 🤪. Now I‘m even more excited to read it 😁. #currentlyreading

Jeg I looked at the profile and see I read it 5 years ago. I have no memory of it. But seems I liked it. 🙃 12mo

A man and a woman are the only survivors of a ship wreck. The man is convinced that it‘s the woman who saved him. After the wreck, he struggles to move on but eventually he does, he gets married and have kids. But he never forgets the woman and also gets convinced that she is not a human woman, but something else and also that this something is closer to him than he thinks. It could be that he is right

An ordinary man meets the extraordinary when he is shipwrecked and succoured by an otherworldly creature. The impact of his time with her will resonate through the rest of his life. Hard to say more without spoilers but I loved the perspective of the creature and how it sees our world. If you love strange, contemplative sci fi, the sea, eccentric grandmothers and precocious, scientifically curious children - I think you‘ll love this too!

Centique It has a historic touch as the shipwreck in the book was a real one and the main character was the author‘s grandfather. It‘s a quick read, only thing holding me back from 5 stars is that I would have liked it to be longer 🌟🌟🌟🌟 5y
Rissreads I went to stack this and I realised I already had! So I must really want to read it! I‘m going looking for a secondhand copy today! 5y
Reggie This sounds also like my type of book. You‘re hitting it out of the park with the weird books!!! 😊 5y
Centique @Rissreads i hope you find one! It‘s really good 😍 5y
Centique @Reggie thanks Reggie! Isn‘t it strange how a random selection of books have things in common like that? #bookserendipity 😍 5y

FINALLY. Two of my favorite people, Sarah Schmidt and @SavidgeReads have been RAVING about this book for months, and I have finally got it in my hot little hands. And look at Simon, right there on the front! I‘m so excited to read it! I don‘t even know what it‘s about - that‘s how much I trust them. 😆🐙📚

A lovely, charming, strange and wonderful sci-fi novel. Tells the story of the survivor of a shipwreck off the coast of Australia, and how he survived for 8 days partly due to the presence and protection offered by someone (or something) which bound him to life. Which then follows, or haunts, his life thereafter. The story is ultimately about the struggle to survive, and how we cling to life, and how no one can survive on their own

A bit weird for me. Has a sci-fi dimension to it. Based on an historical fact. Her great great grandfather survived a wreck. The steamship Admella sank off the SA coast in 1859. She uses these facts to weave a different sort of story. This is my third Aussie read for this year. 6 books read and half Aussie. @MrsMalaprop

MrsMalaprop I‘ve heard about this one. @Rissreads it might be one for you? 6y

George survives a shipwreck off the South Australian coast but is haunted by an alien woman survivor whom he fears will ruin his life. Until he finds her he can‘t be a ‘casually human man‘. His son Henry, a strange boy, coexists with an alien mark on his skin & craves his father‘s acceptance. Beautiful writing, compassionate w vivid scenes of 19th century Adelaide. The supernatural parts challenged me but made me think of home & living w ‘others‘.

Book serendipity moment: we visited a friend today who has an art gallery, & I happened to mention I was reading From The Wreck ... he asked what shipwreck it was - I said the Admella - and he had A PAINTING OF THE ADMELLA! Here it is. 😍 #booknerdmoment

Weaponxgirl That's a super cool coincidence! 7y
Abailliekaras @Weaponxgirl I know! So rare to read a book set in south Australia let alone find a painting of the subject ... 7y

@MrsMalaprop #ozfictiongiveaway
My pick is the tagged book which Simon Savidge raves about and which is only available in Australia - nowhere else, so unfair!!
Congrats on your milestone and thanks for highlighting #ozfiction! 💖

Australian historical fiction with a side of sci-fi / paranormal. An otherworldly being insinuates herself into the life of a shipwreck survivor and attaches herself (literally) to his son. Ethereal and moving.

Mostly in 3rd person POV, but we get some chapters in her voice. #UnusualNarrators #AndItsAugust

@KVanRead here's a few new books by #australianauthors - I loved all of these. The Gulf and Ache are both contemporary reads, a little bittersweet. From the Wreck is historical fiction with a (scifi? paranormal?) twist and Rubik is offbeat interconnected stories.
