I'm giving it a so-so review; however, it's important to note that I am definitely not the intended demographic for this graphic novel. I put this in my high school classroom library. It's very weird, but I know a lot of students that would probably enjoy this. There's flirting between boys, but they don't even kiss, so there's nothing risque. You could probably even give this to middle schoolers.
We don't have wifi yet at our new house + all my hooks are still in boxes, so I went to the library, conveniently 3 minutes away! I checked out volumes 1 & 2 of The Backstagers, a comic that's been on my TBR for awhile now. It's about a group of teens that work on the backstage crew for their schools theatre club, but there's some spooky stuff involved 👀 It kind of reminds me of Lumberjanes.
@Blueberry
It's like Narnia...but drama club edition.
I adored the graphics and vibrant colours in here. The layout and text bubbles were really well organized. Solid punny title (I'm a fan of dad jokes). I'll definitely have to pick up the next volume.
Look, I'm a sucker for bad dad puns and I'm trying to read more graphic novels so I gotta read Rebels Without Applause
Just wanted to share with y'all my favorite comic I read this month! Another gem from #Hoopla
Definitely similar to LumberJanes (but I think I liked this better??!) The characters and the illustrations had me grinning throughout!! So fun! 😊 I'll be reading vol. 2 soon for sure
Here's a great bookriot article about different portrayals of masculinity in this : https://bookriot.com/2017/05/12/blushing-boys-and-the-backstagers/
Somehow, I thought THE BACKSTAGERS was a mostly realistic comic about teenage theatrical types. It‘s actually about a bunch of misfits who navigate the magical tunnels underneath their high school theatre, and it‘s A DELIGHT! Tynion and Sygh give all the metaphorical wonder and mystery that makes theatre so exciting a literal twist, with plenty of danger blended in. I requested vol 2 the moment I finished because I need MORE. #caseyplusbooks
I loved this. It reminded a lot of Lumberjanes, which I also enjoy. Plus, I think Beckett might be my soul mate.
#BookishBingo: Made you laugh
[#ComicBookReview] The Backstagers is a really fun story about a group of friends who work the backstage crew for their school‘s theaters. They‘re the only ones who know about the mysterious tunnels that lead to magical rooms.
This was a really quick, easy, enjoyable read with really cute art. 🎭📖

FEBRUARY 7 PULL #ncbd #comicsrecs #comicsretailer
This was a MASSIVE week and I only read a little more than half of what I brought home with me (the other half is stuff I am super behind on 😬)
👇individual notes and ratings in the comments👇
It's a little tricky to read when you've got an arm-load of cats... #KAL #CatsOfLitsy
Well this was just super cute and delightful to read. It made me nostalgic for my teenage theater days. 😁 looking forward to reading more of this series, for sure. If you like lumberjanes you‘ll def like this one.
Also - counts as a comic not published by Marvel, DC, or Image — if you‘re doing the bookriot read harder challenge 😄
#letsgetgraphicweeklongmarathon
I join Jory in his #amazement - especially since I worked as a stagehand all through high school and there were no cool random portals in my theater (though there was a ghost). 😅

#letsgetgraphicweeklongmarathon
Since today is the first day of both the #letsgetgraphicweeklongmarathon and #litsypartyofone, I finished my current read and am going to knock out this graphic novel! Moxie has a great cast of diverse characters and it looks like The Backstagers does too!
I DON‘T BELIEVE YOU, STAGE MANAGERS!
But you guys I just found out I can check out a few free digital comics every month from my new library. I FINALLY got my hands on the backstagers and it is delightful.
Terribly charming, this should definitely be paired with Lumberjanes.
THIS HAS BEEN A DELIGHT TO READ. If you like Lumberjanes you will like this series. Omg.
Oh my goodness, this comic is super cute! I loved all the theater and musical references! The characters are all really likable and their designs really fun. It reminds me of Ouran High School Host Club. The story ends in a cliffhanger this volume. I'm dying to learn more about the whole magical realm that exists behind the stage. Hopefully we get more issues soon.
Pro: Just finished a great comic miniseries
Con: Just finished a great comic miniseries AND NOTHING WILL EVER FEEL GOOD AGAIN!!
Awesome all-ages comic that's like Lumberjanes set in the theatre of an all-boys school. Funny and joyous but also heartfelt and sometimes bittersweet.
