Somebody to Love
Somebody to Love: The Life, Death and Legacy of Freddie Mercury | Matt Richards, Mark Langthorne
14 posts | 4 read | 1 reading | 9 to read
For the first time, the final years of one of the world's most captivating rock showman are laid bare. Including interviews from Freddie Mercury's closest friends in the last years of his life, along with personal photographs, Somebody to Love is an authoritative biography of the great man. Here are previously unknown and startling facts about the singer and his life, moving detail on his lifelong search for love and personal fulfilment, and of course his tragic contraction of a then killer disease in the mid-1980s. Woven throughout Freddie's life is the shocking story of how the HIV virus came to hold the world in its grip, was cruelly labelled 'The Gay Plague' and the unwitting few who indirectly infected thousands of men, women and children - Freddie Mercury himself being one of the most famous. The death of this vibrant and spectacularly talented rock star, shook the world of medicine as well as the world of music. Somebody to Love finally puts the record straight and pays detailed tribute to the man himself.

@Cinfhen I'm still reeling from the fact that Jenny didn't get through to the live shows! #AddictedtoTheChase #teamvixen forever!

Cinfhen What?????? Im shocked 😮 who went through??? How many “acts” went through?? 5y
jenniferw88 @Cinfhen lots of rubbish ones... an actress from coronation street, some social media influencers, martin bashir, love islanders... 12 acts in total. 5y
Cinfhen So they opted for no talent but makes for good drama 5y
jenniferw88 @Cinfhen yep. There's a lot of unhappy people on Twitter complaining about the lack of Jenny! 😂 5y

This book is not what I expected, but I really appreciate what the author is doing by combing the biography of Mercury and history of HIV/AIDS... I really do believe that it doesn‘t take away the accomplishments of Mercury as a singer, songwriter and performer.

#audiobook #booked2019 #featuresamusician

Centique I would stack this except I already have! I love Freddie so much. What did you think of the movie? I really enjoyed it. 5y
Kathrin @Centique I am not a movie person, so I haven't seen it yet. 🙄🙄🙄 5y
Centique @Kathrin oh well maybe avoid it then! I love movies almost as much as I love books 😍 5y
Kathrin @Centique I am just to impatient for movies... the only time that I watch them is while I am on long plane rides... once I am tired of reading. 🤪 5y
Cinfhen Great job on another prompt 5y

I love Freddie Mercury and was keen to learn more about him. I did learn more about the facts of his career, and the chapters on the AIDS were fascinating, but I didn‘t get a personal portrait of Mercury. I did appreciate the way the author attempted to provide insight as to how and why Mercury remained “in the closet” while also never hiding his flamboyance. However, the writing was clunky at best and downright contradictory far too often.

Cannot tell you how excited I am to read this biography of Freddie Mercury. Obsessed as I am with him, I‘m surprised this is the first time I‘ve read his bio! 👨🏻👑🎤 #FreddieMercury

Well this prompt made me think of Radio Gaga. “I‘d sit alone and watch your light, my only friend through teenage nights, and everything I had to know, I heard it on my radio”

I‘ve added this book to my TBR after seeing Bohemian Rhapsody which I loved 😍😍😍 Rami Malek was amazing. RIP Freddie 😢

Tanisha_A That movie was done so well! 😃 6y
jenniferw88 I had a similar idea. (I'm glad I didn't go for Queen!) 6y

Cinfhen Loved the movie!!! Rami was brilliant almost believed he was Freddie but this book didn‘t hold my attention. I felt like it was the movie page by page. Great choice!!! 6y
Centique @Cinfhen I‘m fussy about bios - it‘s hard to find the right balance between thorough but not excessive detail. Will keep looking for a good un! 6y
TNbookworm Loved Bohemian Rhapsody, Rami was amazing! 6y
KirstieE I LOVED LOVED LOOOVED bohemian rhapsody and made me appreciate Queen even more ! ❤️❤️ 6y
Centique So good to find more fans 😍 @KirstieE @TNbookworm 💕 6y
CarolynM My 19 year old daughter is totally Queen obsessed. She has interesting taste in music - she loved The Doors when she was 2 and went through a Frank Sinatra stage at 13😂 (edited) 6y
Centique @CarolynM that is so cool! I love The Doors as well but I didn‘t discover them till I was 19 - your daughter‘s much quicker! 👏😀 6y
CarolynM I thought having teenage and young adult offspring would mean being exposed to new music, but no. The older one isn't into it at all and the younger only likes our old stuff! 6y

Listened to this to prep for seeing #bohemianrhapsody. This book was so good! Somebody to Love shows Freddie Mercury's rise to fame with Queen as well as the story of AIDS. The juxtaposition was just perfect because it gives background to what the 1980's gay scene was like during the epidemic and how Freddie was affected by it and in denial. This is the story that should of been made into a movie.

Coby613 Agreed. The movie wrongly presented things as well 6y

#MarchIntoOz #day27 #BadBoyForLove Today‘s prompt is an Aussie rock classic by Rose Tattoo, Angry Anderson‘s band.Angry definitely had that Bad Boy vibe, that chipped tooth smile was legendary. The tagged book is about another musical Bad Boy. Freddie Mercury loved his reputation as man who‘d try anything once. His lifestyle ended up being the thing that killed him unfortunately, his love for the bathhouses in NYC is probably where he contracted HIV.

Cinfhen RIP 💔 7y
CarolynM Is there anyone who doesn't love Freddie? He was a great loss to the world. Excellent choice. 7y

This is a #blameitonlitsy purchase. My 15 year old daughter loves Queen, and I was reading that this is more than just about his life; it's also about the rise of AIDS in America in the 80s. (Thanks @Lizpixie ! I saw your pic of this book and was immediately on Amazon to order it. Can't wait to read it😆) #thatcovertho
