Wizard of Oz: An Over-the-Rainbow Celebration of the World's Favorite Movie | Ben Nussbaum
13 posts | 2 read
A celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer movie musical, this new book The Wizard of Oz offers a rare glimpse into the creation of the classic film, its creator L. Frank Baum, the Academy Award-winning score, the leading lady, and the Oz phenomenon that continues to captivate the world. Although Oz creator L. Frank Baum died twenty years prior to the release of MGMs celebrated film, his fascinating career and story, as told in this new book, will surprise even the most devoted Oz fans. Prior to MGMs 1939 release of the movie, Baums book was featured as a Broadway musical, with songs by the justifiably forgotten Fred R. Hamlin, and two bizarre silent movies. The enduring appeal and lasting influence of The Wizard of Oz are discussed in a special chapter by creators great-grandson Roger Baum. The Wizard of Oz will lead the reader down the proverbial yellow brick road to discover: The seven flawless decisions MGM made to adapt Baums sprawling childrens book into a movie musical. The groundbreaking moviemaking techniques, MGMs second full-length Technicolor film. The surprising story behind Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburgs superlative score, which includes Over the Rainbow, considered the greatest movie song of all time. How Judy Garland won Dorothy, her most enduring role, after 20th Century Fox refused to loan Shirley Temple to MGM. The birth of films greatest canine star, Cairn Terrier, Terry, as Dorothys little dog Toto. The many everyday Oz expressions that come from the most oft-quoted movie of all time How the Wicked Witch of the West (renamed her Elphaba after Oz creators initials) was remade for good in Broadways Oz prequel Wicked. This celebration of the iconic film is a must-have for all Wizard of Oz lovers.

@dabbe Thank you ~ you are much more like Glenda than the Wicked Witch who wielded the hour glass in the tagged book. 👑

dabbe You're welcome! I tried to choose a color to match water--for your love of kayaking. 💙🩵💙 2mo

Dorothy would be massaging her sore feet, because camp activities in red sparkly heels 👠 is a poor life choice. 🤣

Although this has been a Halloween watch for over 50 yrs for me .... I just think every time I watch it that she got shoes from a dead person she has just killed 😳🤪

Laura317 I‘ve never been able to get past those flying monkeys. 😱😱 5y
Ddzmini @Laura317 I just wondered if anyone else noticed the concept behind the slippers/shoes. Also that movie had a lot of spooky things happen on set. My Grandma was friends with Ray Bolger (the scarecrow) so it was really something 😳 5y
Laura317 @Ddzmini I hadn‘t noticed the shoes 👠 being from dead person. I might have to try and watch it. How cool that your Grandma was friends with the scarecrow! I heard that a little person supposedly hung himself. Not sure if it is true or not. 5y
Ddzmini @Laura317 Yea they have books on all the scary stuff that happen while filming it was really bad I remember my grandma telling us stories about the filming 😳🙌🏽 (edited) 5y

Hello @ReadingMermaid 👋👋👋
🧙‍♀️Not Twilight. No.
📱I prefer paper books. I read ebooks.
🍫 I have the word Chocolate in Mandarin tattoed on my left ankle.

Clare-Dragonfly Why Mandarin? 6y
tournevis @Clare-Dragonfly Because so many people have somwthing tattooed in Chinese characters that either means nothing because the characters are wrong or it means something completely nonesensical like empty meat head or police saussage, or what not. Irony. 6y
