Me Before You: A Novel
Me Before You: A Novel | Jojo Moyes
A New York Times bestsellerwith more than one million copies soldby the author of One Plus One and* The Girl You Left Behind* They had nothing in common until love gave them everything to lose . . . Louisa Clark is an ordinary girl living an exceedingly ordinary lifesteady boyfriend, close familywho has barely been farther afield than their tiny village. She takes a badly needed job working for exMaster of the Universe Will Traynor, who is wheelchair bound after an accident. Will has always lived a huge lifebig deals, extreme sports, worldwide traveland now hes pretty sure he cannot live the way he is. Will is acerbic, moody, bossybut Lou refuses to treat him with kid gloves, and soon his happiness means more to her than she expected. When she learns that Will has shocking plans of his own, she sets out to show him that life is still worth living. A Love Story for this generation, Me Before You brings to life two people who couldnt have less in commona heartbreakingly romantic novel that asks, What do you do when making the person you love happy also means breaking your own heart? Amazon.com ReviewAmazon Best Books of the Month, January 2013: Before Louisa met Will, her plans didn't reach beyond their tiny English town. Will, when he wasn't closing multimillion-dollar deals, blew off steam scaling mountains, leaping from planes, and enjoying exquisite women--until an accident left him paralyzed and seriously depressed. When his mother hires Lou to keep his spirits up, he meets her awkward overtures with caustic contempt, but she's tenacious and oddly endearing. Their fondness grows into something deeper, gaining urgency when she realizes his determination to end his life, and her efforts to convince him of its value throw her own bland ambitions into question. Plumbing morally complex depths with comedy and compassion, Jojo Moyes elevates the story of Lou and Will from what could have been a maudlin weepie into a tragic love story, with a catharsis that will wring out your heart and leave you feeling fearless. --Mari MalcolmFrom BooklistIn The Last Letter from Your Lover (2011), Moyes presented a heavily plotted novel that spanned decades and featured parallel romances. Her newest work dials down the intricacy, and the result is a far more intimate novel. Moyes introduces us first to Will Traynor, a formerly high-flying, thrill-seeking executive now confined to a wheelchair as a quadriplegic. Twentysomething Louisa Lou Clark has been hired as his caretaker, despite a total lack of experience. As the prickly Will and plainspoken Lou gradually warm to each other, she learns that the six-month length of her contract coincides with the amount of time Will has agreed, for his parents sake, to postpone his planned assisted suicide, a subject Moyes treats evenhandedly. Armed with this information, Lou sets about creating adventures for Will, hoping to give him a reason to live. Simultaneously, Will encourages Lou to expand the expectations of what her life could be. All signs point to romance and a happy ending for the pair, but Moyes has something more heartbreakingly truthful in mind: Sometimes love isnt enough. --Patty Wetli

Tagged book definitely made me cry! You can also add all the HP books from Prisoner of Azkaban to the end. Books don‘t usually bring out the tears in me as much as movies, though. Great comic shared by @strandbookstore on Instagram!

What books have made you cry?

Curiouser_and_curiouser Nothing recently, maybe The Power of One a little. I'm still searching. I've been through a difficult last few years, am I now a stone?.... I need a good cry, and not from any real life situations either, someone else's fictitious one please. 5d
Zoes_Human “It gives me the feeling of eternal solitude.“ That's exactly how Death in the Woods and Other Stories by Sherwood Anderson makes me feel. 5d

This book was so heartbreaking and sad in the end!

HoneyBeeLee @EadieB yeah this one had me ugly crying at the end too. 4w
EadieB @HoneyBeeLee It was such a beautiful story but so sad! 4w
HoneyBeeLee @EadieB it defiantly was, and even knowing what‘s going to happen in the end still does not prepare you for it. Can‘t wait to start the second and third books for this series. Hoping to start the second one this weekend. 4w

EadieB @HoneyBeeLee I gave The the 1st and 3rd 5 stars and the 2nd one 4 stars. It was very good but I liked the others more. 4w
HoneyBeeLee @EadieB phew okay. That‘s not a bad rating. That‘s one thing I worry about series that have a really good first book, if the others will be on par with it. 4w
EadieB @HoneyBeeLee It's definitely a good book and tells about how she grieved and moved on. 4w

Well, I read it. There we go. I finished it. What else can be said? Will I read the next one? Probably 🤷‍♀️Because while taking a strong, ethically controversial stance does not a transformative arc make, I‘m a sucker for a straightforward romance. I went into this book (which was a gift from @Jee_HookedOnBookz Thank You!) without knowing much about the plot or controversy. While I mostly enjoyed the story, the main controversial topic made me very uncomfortable. I‘ll say more in spoilers below. I‘d love to discuss if anyone is interested. Use spoiler tags plz.

Soubhiville When it comes to right to choose euthanasia, I support that idea. My grandmother passed from colon cancer, and her last few months were very painful. She told us she would have opted for euthanasia if it were available and legal. As a former vet tech, and a pet owner who has been through the choice of a kind end many times, I don‘t understand how it‘s not available for people at end of life situations. 1mo
Soubhiville That said, I‘m not sure I feel Will was at that point. I‘m in the fence about it in this situation. Also, I 100% get why there was an uproar about this book and movie. I have not seen the movie, but it does sound like the book handled the whole situation and story a little more tastefully? I don‘t think it was Moyes intention to glamorize or glorify death. I think she just wanted to support the choice. But I understand the outrage still. (edited) 1mo
Megabooks Theoretically the right to take one‘s own life is the ultimate in self-determination. Talking about the suffering olympics is a bit like Roxane Gay says about the privilege olympics. Who‘s to judge? That said, there is a line between a medically terminal condition (no more science can do) and a survivable condition. If I remember, Will is the latter, exactly where the mud is. I feel cowardly recusing myself from judgement, but that‘s what I did. 1mo
DGRachel I find this is something I only discuss with a select few people. Personally, I fully support having the choice to end one‘s life and I think it‘s cruel and selfish to keep people alive against their will. We give our pets dignity in death, why can‘t we extend that same grace to human beings? 1mo
Centique @Soubhiville I felt very similarly to you in having some discomfort about it. I‘ve spent a bit of time with terminally ill and very ill but surviving people and I wonder sometimes if authors minimise the day to day suffering to make their book more palatable? Certainly ive read more books where the pain and suffering isn‘t portrayed realistically. Perhaps this is an example of that. 1mo

I have been trying to break out of an extended reading slump so I thought I‘d read something I normally wouldn‘t pick up. I flew through this in a couple of days and enjoyed it more than I expected. I don‘t plan on reading the other books in this series, but this one was a good read. The subject matter is heartbreaking, but the characters drew me in, and even though I knew how it ended I kept wanting to read to see how it was dealt with.

A pick for book club. I wasn‘t expecting to like it as much as I did, as I don‘t normally care for romance novels. It was definitely difficult and thought provoking reading. However, I seem to be really bothered by Louisa‘s parents‘ and sister‘s low expectations for her and the way they speak to her throughout the book, until the ending.
