12 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
"Bodies can tell you a lot. There can be an eloquence about the dead. But you have to be able to interpret what they are telling you... "This captivating, expertly crafted mystery captures the life and essence of Victorian Dublin and draws the reader on a gripping journey of murder and intrigue. When a Dublin Pawnbroker is found murdered and the lead suspect goes missing, Sergeant Joe Swallow is handed the poisoned chalice of the investigation. On the way he uncovers deep-rooted corruption, discovers the power of new, scientific detection techniques and encounters a ruthless adversary. With authorities pressing for a quick resolution, the public living in fear of attack and the newspapers happy to point to the police's every mistake, Swallow must use every trick in his arsenal to crack the case. Following leads from Trim Castle to the Tower of London, The Eloquence of the Dead is a taut, fast-paced crime thriller perfect for fans of Charles Finch and Charles Todd.

Book 2 of the Joe Swallow detective series. (Didn't know there was book 1, so reading now!) A dead pawn shop proprietor is found a,week after the murder. And his sister is missing. Did she kill him and run? Boxes of silver and place settings are found in the shop, but not listed on inventory. Swallow is on the case, that takes him to London and back. Of course there is a fractured relationship in Swallows ife too.4.5 ⭐️

I have been submerged in the criminal, political, & social world of 1887 Dublin. Det. Joe Swallow walks its streets, meets a myriad of people in pubs(he drinks Medoc wine,Tullamore whiskey) all the while on the hunt for stolen goods & murderers. The crimes are as a result of the recent Land Acts, which allowed estates to be transferred to peasants,& its owners are compensated by Great Britain. He is tenacious, daring, intelligent,& has an instinct 🔽

kspenmoll 🔼 for solving crimes. He has his own personal conflicts: on his job, in his romantic life, & home life with his “Fenian” sister( free Ireland). This police procedural succeeds as a wonderful, well researched period piece, with attention to minute details.I am sorry to leave this time & place! (edited) 3y
Ncostell This sounds great, I love a good historical mystery/police procedural. It looks like this is part of a series. Can it be read as a stand alone or do you recommend reading the first book before this one? 3y
kspenmoll I think it can be read as a stand alone. I read the first one so long ago that my background knowledge was vague! 3y

Love, love this image!
“They would mill about the forecourt, stout like, strutting their little authority.”-Lady Margaret (comparison to her tenants).Haughty distain!
She deeded her land over to her tenants.Under Lord Salisbury‘s government(Prime Minister of the House of Lords),if she acted now she would get the “best price” for her property. She was glad to get out- bills, creditors, rot & damp infiltrated the house-it was falling down around her.

Reading while awaiting an oil change. Books are the best! Love this map of Dublin in this book. Someday I hope to get there myself. Not just through books. But in the meantime, the author‘s descriptive powers truly make me feel I am visiting Dublin in 1887. 📚❤️☕️ Having coffee too.

“They clerks, officials] would mill about the forecourt, stoat-like, strutting their little authority.” Stoat? Had to look that one up. A stoat is like an ermine, in the weasel family. Appropriate in that Lady Margaret Gessel had sold out her home & land,as “...the way to pacify Ireland is to give it back to the Irish, field by field, farm by farm.” The “stoat-like” officials were there to auction her goods.
